Worth More Than Gold
Just imagine a place like the 1800s with little technology and pirates. Be gentle! I’m a science student, not a writer.
~ ~ ~ Chapter 1 The night was cold as the young man barged into his dark house. For a teen, he usually never stayed out too late. This night was no exception. While his classmates were parting it up in joy of the long awaited weekend, he would rather spend his Friday night reading. He glanced around the dark kitchen for signs of dinner. He never expected much as his mother was no longer living but his father always made time to try cook something remotely edible. He shook his head and sighed, his father was probably too busy with his work to realize that the day was over. He loved his father dearly but not when he worked long hours in his study translating ancient scriptures of some forgotten island. His father was a brilliant archeologist who was the leading expert on a new language used by a people who share ties to the ancient Egyptians and perhaps other cultures but left to colonize a tropical island in the Indian Ocean. He discovered some artifacts while working for Professor Herald Hobbs when he was in college. My father and Hobbs were the only people to study and decode the strange language that was very different from their alleged Egyptian cousins. His father, James Aubrey, was a well renowned man of the intellectual world and worked at the museum of history. Though many knew he took things to the extreme when it came to deciphering the forgotten language. Evan, though he enjoyed studying too much for a boy his age, was no nerd like his father. He liked the outdoors and played sports enough to keep a relatively nice figure. Though he was somewhat feminine, he never really cared what people though as he was often in his own world. He inherited his lovely features from his mother. His dazzling blue eyes and dirty blond hair that had a slight curl to it and was layered down to his shoulders. Both his parent had small figures and he was only 5”7. The boy made his way though the house to his father’s study. He tried to turn on the lights but they didn’t work. “Father?” He called out into the quiet house. There was no response. Evan made his way back to the kitchen and tried the lights but to no avail. He quickly found a candle and made his way to the study. His father must be in bed. The museum was closed at this time of night and his father wouldn’t be anywhere else. The study was a mess, more so than usual. Then he saw his father, lying on the ground. He rushed over. “Father? Father!!” He shook his father with his free arm but are he turned his father over, he say the blood in a pool leaking out from the bullet wound in his chest Evan cried, as he checked his father’s pulse for any signs of life. None. He rushed over to the phone to dial for the police. “Hello, this is the Durum city police…” a generic male voice answered. “My father! He’s been killed, shot. Please help!” Evan cried into the phone. “Sir, we are sending help, where do you live?” the police responded. “53 Westcliff Stre-et… why…who. He w-was a scholar…” Evan rambled on still crying. “Sir, please calm down and stay on the phone. Do you know who shot your father?” “No… I j-just got ho-home.” Evan replied. He began to cry heavily as the reality set in that he was alone. He dropped the phone and sobbed into his hands. The police soon barged into the house and found him. They lit some candles and sent someone to fix the power. One police officer escorted Evan out of the house and to the police station. He didn’t understand why his father, a simple scholar, was murdered.~ ~ ~
