Chapter One: Protecting Mother

“Hahaha. Hahahaha.”

The two boys happily laughed as they played in the yard with a couple of their friends. This would be the last time they’d even consider hanging out with them. After this day, the two boys wouldn’t even look in the other kids’ direction if they could help it. It had nothing to do with the two boys themselves, no. It was because of what their friends’ mothers were about to say about their own mother.

These two boys loved their mother dearly, and would hate any that badmouthed her. They didn’t need to be very old to know when someone was being cruel to her. It was just so blatantly obvious to them. Sure, they could handle it when people talked about them, even to their faces, but when it came to their mother, they grew very angry and cold towards whoever spoke. It happened before, too, back in kindergarten. Needless to say, these two twins started ignoring the teacher and principal, and ended up needing to switch schools or they were going to fail for non-participation.

“Look at those two boys,” they heard one of the mothers say, but paid no attention at first. “Aren’t they adorable?”
“Hehe, they are, yes, but did you hear about their mother?”

The young twins stopped and looked up at the two women that were gossiping on the bench. “What about her?”

“There’s a rumor that she’s sleeping with her brother-in-law, and that the twins might belong to him and not her husband.”

“Oh my, are you serious?” The other woman nodded. “Oh dear, does her husband know?”

“I don’t think so, but he’ll find out soon enough. He’s bound to hear the rumors eventually, right?”

The boys glanced at each other, then turned back to the game for a moment. “Hey, Naga?” one whispered to the other.

“Yeah, Kaga?” his brother whispered back.

“Do all their moms think that about her?”

They both looked around at the women sitting around, only at the twins’ house so that their kids could have fun at the boys’ eighth birthday party. They all seemed to be gossiping about something, but they couldn’t be certain that they were all talking about their dear mother. And so in order to find out, they ran back into the game, going into ‘fake play’ mode. Their laughter became automatic rather than cheerful as they ran around the yard, playing freeze tag. The twins could easily win, but they allowed themselves to be tagged near a different group of women, and listened in as best they could. “Is it true? Her brother-in-law?”

“That is what I heard.”

“I hope her husband divorces her then.”

“What would happen to the twins then?” asked a third mom.

“Maybe she can just keep them. It sounds like they aren’t his anyway.”

The twins continued to play this way until they knew the truth. Every mother there really was talking about her, and they didn’t feel much like celebrating anymore. Kagami looked at Nagami, who nodded back. They both picked up a small, plastic cup full of juice. Nagami walked up to one half of the women, Kagami walking up to the other half, and in unison they threw the cups of juice onto the women, making them shriek and yell at the two boys. In their defense, they shouted, over everyone else, and once again in perfect unison, “You are not allowed here! Get out before we call the cops on you!”

Their own mother ran up to them then. “Boys, why did you do that? What’s wrong?”

“They were being mean, Momma,” said Nagami.

“Yeah,” agreed Kagami. “We don’t want anyone here if they’re gonna be mean to you.”

She tried to hold back her tears. Still so young, and yet so protective of her already. “Boys… alright. Thank you.” She looked back at the other women, and smiled sadly. “You heard the little men of the house. Please leave before there is more of a fuss.”

The ladies all left, none too quietly, taking their children with them. The two boys watched them leave silently, not feeling any remorse at all for their actions. Those other kids had been play pals with them for a couple years, but they didn’t mind breaking ties with them. They did this to protect their family, to protect their mother. If anything or anyone tried to threaten them in any way, they would take action to stop it.

They spent the rest of the day playing with their mother, and when their father came home they had dinner and cake with ice cream. “So what caused the boys to behave so poorly today?” the man asked after hearing about what they did to the women.

Nagami looked up. “They were being mean to Momma.”

Kagami looked up. “They kept talking about her.”

At the same time, both boys stated, “They were saying that Momma and Uncle Stan were sleeping with each other.” Kagami then sighed lightly and added, “And they were saying… that we might be Uncle Stan’s kids, instead of yours, Papa.”

Their father sighed deeply. “I don’t know why they’re making up such nonsense, but don’t you boys worry. I know that your mother isn’t that kind of woman.” He kissed his wife gently, smiling down at her. “I trust you completely, no matter what anyone else says.”

She smiled back at him, putting her arms around him. “I’m so glad. I don’t want to lose you over a silly rumor.”

Nagami and Kagami watched their parents, then glanced at each other. As their eyes locked, they felt a connection spark between them. They just stared at each other though, then looked back at their parents again. “Kagami?” whispered Nagami.

“Yeah, Naga?” his brother whispered back.

Nagami smiled softly as Kagami looked at him, waiting for him to say something. “Momma is safe,” the boy said finally, and Kagami started smiling himself, nodding happily in agreement.

Their father stood up, catching their attention. “How about a new movie, boys?”

“Something with twins maybe?” the two asked together. “Not girly twins again though. It’s always the same thing with them.”

“Maybe not a twin movie. Those are actually kind of rare to find,” he told his sons.

“Well then,” started Nagami, “we’ll pick something…”

“That isn’t so dumb,” finished Kagami.

The two boys walked over to their family’s collection of video tapes and started looking around. As they asked each other about titles, they were oblivious to the loving glances their parents gave each other. And as they watched the movie they chose, they didn’t realize that soon enough it wouldn’t be just them anymore.
