Chapter One
Ok everybody. This is the only story I have really ever written. So please, criticize but be nice. The format is very technical as I am an English major at university. Make suggestions for improvement and let me know whatever you think. I appreciate it. ^_^
“Smile!” *Click* “Aw… Lucas that was not a smile!”
“What do you mean? I was smiling.” I walk over and look at the camera James is holding. “See? That’s me and that’s a smile. Not that it keeps me from looking ugly…”
“Lies! Both of you, lies! You are absolutely gorgeous and he is smiling.” Brian kisses me on the top of the head, looking at the picture from over my shoulder. “That’s the way he smiles and I like it that way.”
“Yeah. Leave him alone James.”
“Hey Erin! ‘Bout time you got here.”
“Shut up James” says Brian as Erin tugs on James’ ear and smiles at Brian and me.
“Ow! Horrible wench.” James dodges the pinch heading his way. “It’s friggin’ freezing out here and we look like idiots standing out in the cold. Let’s just head inside and buy the nice warm coffee these people have labored over and thus force them to do it all over again.”
“Be there in just a bit. Lucas, stay here a sec.” Brian snatches my braid. Erin and James pause in their banter, look back but continue on as Brian waves them forward.
“Brian…”
“Lucas.”
“I was just joking, ok?”
“No you weren’t. You meant it when you said you were ugly. Which is complete bullocks by the way. I thought we got past this self-hate bit. What’s wrong?”
“I’m fine. Stop looking at me like that. Let’s just go inside and…” Brian pulls me back by my shoulder. He steps in front of me and forces my chin up.
“What happened?”
“Who said something did?”
“Lucas…” My eyes divert.
“I saw my mom while I was at the store today.”Brian’s face falls and his eyes grow concerned. “She seemed a bit shocked and I froze. She came out her shock first and began to tell me how horrible a son I was and how I had disgraced the family. She told me how being gay was a sin and I was headed straight for hell. The usual stuff.”
“That’s not all, is it?” I glance at his face and see more knowledge than I can really handle. I look down the street, trying to avoid answering the question. He brings my face back around. I still won’t look him in the eyes.
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Lucas, I’m just trying to help…”
“I know… I just…” my voice drops “it was my dad.” Brian body grows taunt.
“Did he hurt you?”
“No. Just as I was about to walk away, he showed up and I froze with fear. He… he just looked at me with such disdain and disgust and I… I realized how afraid of him I still am. I was… I was afraid he was gonna hit me so I ran. I ran away like the scared little boy I am and…” Brian pulls me into his arms as I begin to cry.
“Shush… it’s ok baby. They are completely wrong about you, about us. You are the most beautiful being I have ever known” I shake my head. “I mean it, and they don’t deserve to have you as a son. Shush… it’s ok. He did a lot to you and it’s understandable you’re scared of him. It’s gonna be ok.” My tears slow down. “Now we’ll wait a second to make sure your tears are all done and then go inside and enjoy the company of people we love. How does that sound?” I nod.
“You don’t have to baby me you know. I know I acted like one but you don’t have to go with it.”
“But you’re my Baby so why shouldn’t I treat you like one? I just treat you that way to show how much I love you.” I smile at him. I go up on my toes and kiss him.
“I love you too.” With both smile. “I’m ready to head in now.” Brian looks at me, hard. I try my best to look better and generally unaffected but my heart feels raw. Brian gives me a look that makes me doubt if I’m fooling him. He turns and we walk to the door. When he opens it and we are immediately greeted with the arguing Erin and James. Brian barks, “Get married already so the rest of us can live in peace…”
