Thing

So I really like Daniel in this, he's not your standard cop. He'd rather do speeding tickets and little side jobs than the larger investigations but he's just so DAMNED good at it >.O

Anyway let me know what you all think please. Thanks! Enjoy!

Daniel couldn’t believe what his colleague was showing him. The one way glass showed a boy of barely eighteen, his limbs littered with old bruises and cuts, a light yellow bruise on his cheek. His five inch long blonde hair was a mess, and hiding his face as he stared at his hands in his lap. His white button up shirt was a mess, surely the one he had worn to the hospital and his blue jeans were little better. A strange small scrap of cloth hung around his neck. Beaten, physically and emotionally destroyed. Daniel ran his fingers through his short black hair in frustration. He had been on the job for nearly eight years now but the cruelty in people never ceased to amaze him.

“When was he picked up?”

Daniel’s tone was low, showing Greg that he wasn’t in a good mood.

“Three days ago, after he was released from the hospital. He’s in protective custody now but he won’t say a word. We’ve even put our best people on him and he just sits in that chair and stares at his hands.”

Daniel sighed; this wasn’t the first one he had seen since the Antonio bust. The man was the biggest sex trafficker east of the Mississippi, although the others usually talked after they were in protective custody. Or at least tried to tell them some things, why was this one different?

“Who is he assigned to now?”

Greg gave him a side glance as he tried to relax and control his body signals. If Daniel was asking him he was sure the man already knew.

“Well that’s why I asked you here. The chief wanted to reassign him. He was to Georgia but he doesn’t seem to respond to her at all, the male cops he seems to tense up a bit and become less self involved.”

Daniel furrowed his brow, never looking away from the boy.

“Wouldn’t he be better with a female cop then? I understand he reacts to men but it’s a negative reaction.”

Greg turned and leaned against the small window pane, his arms crossed on his chest as he stared direction at Daniel.

“We want to stick different people in there with him, see which ones he reacts best with. You’re next on the list Danny.”

Daniel sighed giving Greg the ‘aww do I have to?’ look. The last thing he wanted was to have to take the boy everywhere with him, having him live with him at his apartment. The chances of him recovering from his emotional wounds were little to none. He shook his head at Greg’s unwavering stare and went to the door.

“That’s my boy, at least try this is important.”

Daniel waved his words away as he entered the interrogation room. The boy didn’t look up, didn’t move, but he did notice a slight tensing of his shoulders.

“My name is Daniel Williams, before I start could I ask what your name is?”

Nothing, not even a twitch.

“If you don’t talk to us we can’t help you, it’s our job to keep you safe you have nothing to be afraid of.”

Nothing. Daniel sighed and walked over to the table to take a seat.

“Do you mind if I smoke?”

No response as he pulled out a cigarette and lit it, taking a long drag before continuing.

“How long were you traveling with Antonio?”

The boy’s head lowered at the mention of Antonio. It was so slight he would have missed it if he blinked. Daniel glanced at the one way glass; sure that Greg was watching to tell the man he saw something. Daniel waited. Small talk did nothing, his presence there was oppressive but the mention of Antonio made him feel insignificant, or maybe in danger. He wasn’t asking the right questions.

“How many others were with you? We managed to rescue seven of you in all in the chaos but I know there had to be more.”

Nothing, he still wasn’t saying what the boy wanted to hear. If he could find the right questions to ask perhaps he would speak. The boy had no concern for the others; perhaps he was isolated from them. If that was true perhaps he was Antonio’s.

“What was it that Antonio did with you? Did you belong to him?”

The boy looked up, cold grey eyes meeting Daniels without any expression of feeling or emotion. He didn’t move, didn’t open his mouth.

“Did he hurt you?”

He lowered his head again, Daniel felt defeated until low words reached him.

“Things don’t have feelings.”

Daniel leaned forward in his chair.

“What do you mean?”

The boy didn’t move, his voice only lowered more.

“Things don’t have feelings.”

He sounded as if he was mimicking someone, the way his tone fell, the way he put dominance into his words.

“Is that what Antonio told you?”

The boy lifted his head again; the cold and unemotional stare was unsettling as he tiled his head a little to the side.

“You’re a thing James, and things don’t have feelings.”

Daniel leaned back in his chair, satisfied with the boys answer. He was mimicking Antonio, although he wasn’t sure why, he was sure he was stuck with the job now. He stood and put out his cigarette.

“Thank you James. You don’t have to stay here any longer. I’ll be back in just a short while.”

The boy’s head dropped again in response as Daniel took his leave. Greg nearly attacked him as he closed the door.

“How the HELL did you DO that! I sent in our top interrogation guys and Mr. Investigations surpasses them all!”

Daniel pushed him aside. The man was good to have around but sometimes he was more than he could handle.

“Are his papers ready? I don’t feel like staying around here all night, I get off in ten minutes you know.”

Greg nodded as they walked down the hall to the chief’s office.

“Yeah, there’s not much to them though, his name is the most information we’ve gotten out of him.”

Daniel nodded, his mind going back to the cold grey stare, he had never seen such pale grey eyes before, and never something so lacking in emotion. Even his voice haunted him, the low sound of it, the way his words never touched his features. The thin tendrils of blonde hair that fell in his eyes, the shadow they cast on his lowered face…

“Here you go.”

The chief’s voice snapped him back to reality as he shoved the boy’s papers into his hands.

“Take him tonight so he can settle in. I don’t want him to leave your sight. We got Antonio and a few others in custody but you know how these enterprises work.”

Daniel nodded and noted how thin his file was. Greg wasn’t kidding.

“Thanks.”

The chief nodded to him as he left, Greg close behind him.

“This is only a temporary setting until we can get him talking again. So the sooner you get him to tell you some things about Antonio and the bust the sooner you can live in peace.”

Daniel nodded to him as they reached the interrogation room again. Georgia was already standing with the boy waiting for them. She smiled as he approached.

“I hope you have better luck with him.”

He grinned at her; they had been in competition since the academy.

“You know I will.”

She made a ‘fuck you’ face and left as Greg followed her. He was alone with him again. He stood firmly, despite his healing wounds, but his face was still cast down.

“Let’s go then.”

He started walking and the boy easily followed. At least he listened well, there was no hearing problem that was going to hinder his investigation, or at least, he didn’t think so.

woot! End of 1. Please R&R, it gets hot pretty quick so expect something fun in the next chapter...
