Chapter 1
A/N: Heads up, the italized part in the beginning is a journal. This is more than most likely going to be the only chapter where we get a look into the journal as well, so don't worry.

Day 49
John Swigger
It’s the fifth day after entering the Bermuda Triangle. The compasses have gone hectic, turning everything around, yet we’ve been able to keep track of our location.
The ship is in fine condition, and the weather helping to push us ahead. We were soon able to make landing at a small, uncharted island. It’s mostly empty, a few copse of trees here and there, and devoid of many animals.
There are four clean water sources near the center of the island, which is connected to a river that branches off and leads to the ocean. It seems to be an ideal place to set up our headquarters.
The days are uneventful as we wait for the building to be built. Once the tank is built, we’ll be able to explore, and find what we need.
All the people are fine. There has been no causalities, though some of the locals that we have paid to work for us from islands off Puerto Rico are restless. They whisper about creatures lurking in the waters. But, those creatures are what we’re after. I just wish we didn’t have to use their help, they might ruin our investigations.
Everyone is in high spirits at the prospect of what we intend to find. I’m happy to be working with the other scientists. They were hand picked by our employer, as was I, and they seem fit for their positions.

Day 298
John Swigger
We have yet to find anything. The tank has long been since built, and the buildings have been built, and the necessaries added.
It is a bad day for us, since we’ve just received word that a representative will be coming in due time, to see our progress. I’m afraid to say they will be very disappointed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 368
John Swigger
It has been almost over a year, and the representative has finally arrived. It seemed that his trip had been delayed by a horrible typhoon, which lasted for quite a while.
He was young, much younger than I believed he should have been. Do they think us impudent, to send up a child?
Except, for our first meeting, he seemed to act responsibly. He’s smart too. I tried to use scientifics, to try and at least confuse him once, but he seemed unfazed, and took everything in in stride. Our employer picked a good man.
In truth, he scares me.

Day 389
We’ve just received news that the representative, Damien, will be staying with us until we make progress. Apparently he told the higher ups that we have good potential, and they’re letting us work here.
I hate him. He might have saved our jobs here, but he is, mildly, a arrogant bastard.
He’s driving me crazy. He walks around, all day, and doesn’t do a thing. You’d think the least he could do is help out a little. We never have enough hands.

Day…
We still have yet to find anything. It’s been over two years, and the higher ups are thinking about trashing the project, from recent disappointing reports.
I can’t even be bothered to find out how long we’ve been out here. I’m just glad we haven’t been forgotten about.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Swigger
Finally! We found a clue of another inhabitant in the ocean. Footprints. But not regular, human footprints. Scaly ones, I guess you could say. I wasn’t hired for that department.
At the moment, we are attempting to follow, though it backtracks many times, and we’ve had to start from the beginning quite a few times. We know for sure this isn’t a hoax.
I wonder why it’s on land?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today is the day. Today is the day we find what we’ve spent such a long time looking for. A mermaid. We’ve have clear signs of it heading towards the lakes.
Again, it is on land, and a group of others have went after it. Two of the scientists, along with about ten of the locals, who haven’t deserted.
I can’t wait till they get back!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Is the net ready?!” A gruff voice yelled out. The owner of the voice was one of the scientists that was to lead the expedition. They had blocked off the entrance to the lake, from the river, and men watched over all sides.
The net in question was in the air, connected to a crane, and leaning over the lake.
When he was given confirmation, he went to check to make sure the holding tank was ready. A little man with a weasel face and greasy hair trailed after him, book in one hand, and trying to precariously write on a piece of paper, laid over on the book as a hard surface.
“Hurry up!” The man said, watching as the man tripped over a tree limb. He wouldn’t normally be so rude, but today was the moment of discovery, and he was a good enough scientist to know how important that was.
They had taken such a long time on even getting a hint of something supernatural in the waters here, that even he was starting to lose hope. The fact that they were going to have to be shut down just about nearly killed him.
Two and a half years, wasted. Time he could spend with his dear Lisa, and his son, Nicky.
He hadn’t even had a chance to write them a letter.
“Is everything ready?” The weasel man said. Victor, his name was, and despite his looks, he was very shy, and a good fellow. When it came to games, however, he was master.
“If these idiots haven’t messed up, then yes,” the bigger man said. By bigger, he was, very much so. Standing at six foot eight, and having very broad shoulders. He was very intimidating, for sure.
“Don’t be rude, Hector,” Vic said lightly, trying to scrape the mud off his shoes, to no avail, but the big male only growled.
“We’ve been out here for a fucking hour already, and I’ve been pulled left and right. Sorry if I thought I had the right.” He looked over the workers, who themselves seemed to be excited. They’d been working with the scientists since the beginning, some of them locals, and the others attendants.
“Lighten up, just a bit,” Vic told him, before walking towards a bunch of high tech looking equipment.
Suddenly, there was yelling, and thrashing water. Both scientists rushed over quickly, hearts quickening.
The workers did their job well, and quickly lowered the net into the water, waiting for it to settle. They could see ripples over the water. Whatever they caught was a fighter.
Everyone worked to tighten it up, and soon it was raised into the air.
It was slowly dropped into a small holding tank, which had been prepped beforehand, and was filled with saltwater, straight from the ocean. They didn’t want to risk changing the water around.
Many of the workers whooped in joy. It was true, they’d gotten a mermaid. Merman, Vic corrected, being the scientist to know about all the lore that could be found about mermaids. He was also a good computer technician, so he wasn’t completely useless, according to some of the hired hands.
It was a joyous day indeed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m not exactly sure how I came up with this idea.
Reviews please. It’ll help get chapters out quicker, if you like it.
