“Elsie, be careful!” Kayden called to his sister from across the play ground where he sat watching from a swing.
He gasped as she allowed herself to fall backwards, hanging by her legs from the jungle gym, her blonde hair, long as it was, still hung a good three feet from the ground.
“I’m fine!” Elsie called back.
Kayden rose from the swing and began walking over to her. His walk broke into a run, however as he saw a boy of considerable size, (it was of course rude to call people fat,) climbing the jungle gym beside Elsie, each step he took made the bars vibrate, and the vibrations were causing Elsie to loose her grip. As she felt herself falling, Elsie pulled herself to a sitting position, gasping as her reach fell just short of the bars. As gravity pulled her down with the added force of her movement, she let out a half-scream that turned into a grunt as she collided against the chest of her big brother.
“Thank you, Kayden.”
“Honestly Elsie,” Kayden sighed as he set her down. “I’ll be graduating in 3 years, and it will be pretty tough to convince mom and dad I can take care of myself in the army if I can’t look after one 6 year-old girl at the park!”
“Sorry!” Elsie giggled.
Kayden crouched down to zip up Elsie’s coat.
“Come on, lets get home.”
Elsie smiled and nodded.
Kayden shivered and pulled Elsie closer to him as a cold wind rushed down the small side street they were on. The street lamps on the main street behind them flickered on, providing a dim light for them in the growing twilight.
“It’s so dark…are we late?”
Kayden glanced at his watch, and then at the sky before replying.
“No, it’s just very cloudy. I think there’s a storm coming.”
Elsie let out a small whimper.
“I hate the dark.”
“Don’t be silly, there’s nothing in the dark that can hurt you.”
”Don’t lie to the poor girl”
Kayden gasped and pulled Elsie closer to him at the sound of the icy female voice. The hair on the back of his neck stood on end, and adrenaline sizzled through him, electrifying his limbs. Something about that voice set warning bells off in his head.
Kayden glanced behind them, at the entrance of the side street stood a tall, beautiful woman. Her beauty did not set his mind at ease however, in fact upon seeing her he was even more convinced that she was indeed dangerous.
“W-who are you?”
Kayden silently cursed himself for the fear in his voice, then, reasoning with himself, he decided that he spoke much too softly for her to have heard him that far away. He took a deep breath to steady his voice so he could repeat himself.
”I’m the thing in the dark that’s going to hurt her.” the reply came before Kayden had been able to re-form the words on his lips.
Kayden swept Elsi up in his arms and began to run down the side street, he couldn’t hear the woman following them. He glanced back and saw that she was still standing in the same spot. She took one step while he was watching her. His head snapped back when Elsie screamed in his arms and clutched tighter to him. To his utter dismay the woman was now standing in front of them. He turned and ran back to the other end, and again she was there in front of them.
“How? What are you?!”
”Mmm” she moaned sensually, ”What keen senses you have, you can tell I’m not like you. You know I’m dangerous”
“What do you want from us?”
”What I want comes from the girl.”
“I don’t have anything I can give you.” Elsie whimpered, her face still buried in Kayden’s jacket.
Kayden set Elsie down behind him, where she clung to his leg.
”Oh, but you do. My kind only desire one thing from humans…blood and I love the taste of the little ones.”
“Vampirin*.” Kayden’s voice was barely a whisper.
Elsie whimpered and clung tighter to his leg.
”Yes, very good.” the dangerous beauty sneered.
“You’ll have to kill me before I let you lay a finger on her.”
”That was the plan.”
Kayden swallowed hard to gather his courage before throwing a punch at the vampiress’ face. The vampiress didn’t flinch, but smirked as Kayden fell to his knees holding his broken hand, trying to stifle his cries.
”Any last requests?”
Elsie pressed herself tightly in to the corner and Kayden turned his back on the vampiress in order to embrace her.
“Spare her, please, take just me.”
The Vampiress let out peals of laughter, and Kayden thought it was the cruelest thing he’d ever heard.
”Not likely, you offer potatoes in place of chocolate, boy. But I promise to make it painless for her.”
The Vampiress kneeled behind Kayden so she could whisper into his ear.
”Too bad I can’t promise the same for you.”
As her breath grazed his cheek Kayden caught the sent of it, and it was like an intoxicating perfume. Kayden tightened his grip on his now sobbing sister, and pulled her close to him. He let out a grunt of pain as the Vampiress dug her nails into the left side of his neck, pulling him closer to her.
”We’ll just get this out of the way.”
The Vampiress said, as she used the nails on her other hand to slice open Kayden’s jacket, leaving a nice scratch on his chest.
Kayden’s breath came out in ragged gasps.
“That burning pain you feel, that’s my venom spreading through you. The venom from my nails is nothing compared to that of my fangs.”
The vampiress yanked Kayden’s head to the side, exposing his neck. Tear streak down Kayden’s cheeks as her fangs sink effortlessly through his delicate flesh.
”This is it.” thought Kayden, ”I’m really going to die here”
“Please…I don’t want to die…”
The Vampiress’ only response to his plea was to dig her nails deeper into his neck. With that, Kayden’s world went black.
