An Unhappy Story

Author Notes: I found this story which I wrote a contest about a year ago. I decided to just post it, to see what everyone thought. Please Review.

April 26, 2003
Dear Mr. Johnson,
Just so you know, this story is the complete truth. Do not think it’s exaggerated and don’t take it lightly. This is the product when someone feels useless.
Sincerely,
Tyler Darren

Tyler laid his pen on the table. He slips the letter into the envelope along with the story and takes it out to the mailbox. As he’s coming inside, he notices the family next door outside. Tyler sees the brother and tomboy sister playing catch as their parents read the newspaper. Tyler begins to think of the 15 year old boy he wasn’t able to save because of his own foolishness.

“What am I going to do now? No one likes me.” I moaned.

My name is Paul Demorris and I’m an out of the closet homosexual and have been for 2 months now. It was horrible to come out to my friends and family. My own parents had called me a disgusting bastard. I called my brother who was 200 miles away and ended up with a dial tone. It wasn’t as bad with my friends…or at least I thought. To my face, they accepted it. Today at school, I overheard them. All of my friends were in a big group, telling everyone I was a “fag”. Now I’m alone. As the song says, ‘One is the loneliness number’.

“You know, you can find someone to care for you.” This was an anonymous voice from the shadows.

“Who’s that? Where are you? What do you mean?” These questions were rapid fire.

“Take it easy, one question at a time.” He stepped to where I could actually see him. It was an older guy, probably a high school graduate. This guy had an athletic build. He had scruffy black hair and lazy brown eyes that made him look like he just woke up. “My name’s Night. What’s yours?”

“Paul.” I replied cautiously. “Now what did you mean by ‘you can find someone to care for you’?”

“Paul, I like you. You get right down to the matter at hand.” Night chuckled to himself while I remained passive. “It’s very simple. I run a little business.”

“What kind of business?” Something about this guy was setting alarms off in my head.

“Lets just say it makes everyone feel good and you can make a lot of money in one day. Lets go into depth over dinner at a local café.”

“I don’t have any money.” I replied with embarrassment.

Night chortled again. “It sounds like you could use the money. It’s my treat though.”

I know I shouldn’t go with this guy, but I’m curious, and he said I can get someone to care about me. That’s all I really want.

Our food finally arrived, but I couldn’t eat. I wanted to hear what Night had to say. The only problem was Night was intent on eating. “Can you please stop eating and talk to me?!”

“Tsk, tsk, tsk. You need to learn the value of patience. I’ll be nice to you though. Simply, my business is making money with sex.”

“Huh?” This was my brilliant reply.

“You heard me. Everyone who works for me is 15-23.”

I was disgusted. “No way!!!”

“Keep your voice down. This isn’t totally legal.”

“By that, you mean it’s straight out illegal. I’m not going to be a part of it.”

Night makes a motion as if signaling. A lanky looking guy comes to our table. He is strikingly good looking with shoulder length black hair and emerald eyes. He takes a seat next to me as I blush. “Paul, this is Tyler. Tyler, our potential worker needs a little convincing. Would you mind?”

“Not at all,” came his deep reply. And then he kissed me. It was a gentle pressure that left me tingling. He pulled away and I reluctantly allowed it. “If you agree to work for Night, you’ll get a lot more of those.”

It was a trap. It felt so good though. Night knew it’s what I wanted and he was using it. “Paul.”

“Yes?” I asked with hesitation.

“You’ll get those kisses every night. Tyler will look out for you and protect you. He will take care of you. You’ll never be alone again.” Those were the key words.

“I’ll do it.” As if to reward me, Tyler kissed me yet again and I got the same fluttering feeling.

That was the start of the end.

“Tyler”, Night turned to face us. “I need to see how Maurice’s fever is doing. Tell Paul the rules while I’m gone.” Tyler put his arm around me as he nodded.

Hi waited until Night was out of earshot, then he turned to me. “Paul, I know you’re a bit nervous. The basic rules are as follows. You work every night, unless you’re throwing up or have a severe fever, like the boy Night went to check on. You do whatever the customer wants without argument. Everything you make, you’re “Supposed” to give to Night. The price varies depending on what you do. You will need to memorize them. You will also have to experiment with your looks. We do have a couple of girls, but some guys have more customers if they cross dress. You already have a feminine look, so we’ll most likely not have to worry. Here’s a little tip though, something Night doesn’t know. If a customer gives you a little more because you were especially good, don’t tell Night. Keep it for a rainy day. You’ll most likely be paired with me since I’ve been here the longest.”

Night then reappears. “Maurice still has a high temperature. He won’t be working tonight. Come Paul. I’ll show you where your room is. You’ll be living with Jack and Jake, twins. As a little warning, they’re currently in a relationship with our 2 girls. If there’s a rubber band on the doorknob, don’t go in.”

I blushed. When we walked in, the twins were reading. They looked up. “Jack and Jake, this is your new roommate, Paul. I’ve already warned him about Melissa and Danni.”

I was curious about something. “Excuse me. You’re straight, but you’ll have sex with guys?”

“We’ll do anything for money.”

“Oh.”
************************************************************
It was my first night and I was really scared. As Tyler had predicted, I was paired with him. He reassured me. “We have someone in mind for you. He’s one of our kinder customers. He’s perfect for your first time.” The word ‘kinder’ made me worry. Wasn’t every customer kind? A car pulled up and I involuntarily shivered. I pressed closer to Tyler who held me. A well built man stepped out.

Tyler stepped in front of me. “We’re giving you a new worker who’s also a virgin so you’re the lucky one. His name’s Paul. I know I don’t really have to say it, but be gentle. He’s a little scared.”

“Don’t worry. Paul’s in good hands.” He held out his hand. “My name’s Rick.” I laid my palm in his hand and went with him to his car. As I got in, I pushed back the waiting tears. I had to do this.

That night was easier then I thought it would be. Rick went slow and was trying not to hurt me. He even paid my $30 extra. When he dropped me back off at the meeting place, I got out and ran all the way back to the prostitute house. I felt so ashamed.
************************************************************
That’s how things were for 6 months. Every night, except for 3 days when I had the flu, I waited on that deserted corner with Tyler. I went with a customer and did what he wanted. A lot of them were sadistic and would whip me, paddle me, or something of that sort. Very rarely did I ever get a few extra bucks or someone who actually cared about my pain. I never saw Rick again. Tyler did keep his promise though and continued to kiss me every night.

Things went downhill when I met someone. He was a first time customer. I blushed when I saw him. I wanted to know him, but not just sexually. I wanted to know his personality. Tyler went up to him before I could though and offered his body. He ignored Tyler and walked over to me.

“I’m Ryan. What’s your name?”

“Paul.” I answered in a quiet voice. I was actually nervous. I haven’t felt like this since my first night.

“Want to come with me?”

“Sure.” Ryan held the car door open for me. I lowered my eyes when I got in. My heart felt all fluttery. It was so weird. We began driving. After 10 silent minutes, I finally asked, “Where are we going?”

”To the park.”

I was shocked. “We’re going to have sex there?”

“Originally, the plan was to go to a hotel, but now we’re going to the park to talk.”

“About what?”

“I don’t know yet.”

We got to the park and found an empty bench. There was an awkward silence. Ryan is the one that broke it with an even more awkward question. “Why do you prostitute?”

I pause before I answered. “I just do.”

“But why?” He asked in a voice of desperation.

“I’m looking for something.”

“That’s a bit vague.”

“It’s meant to be.” We moved on to lighter conversation. We talked about likes, dislikes, hobbies, and pet peeves. At about midnight he took me back to the meeting place. He gave me money as if we had sex and then kissed my cheek. He lingered with the kiss longer then necessary. I got out and watched him drive off. I started walking back to the house with my hand pressed to my cheek.
************************************************************
Ryan came many times, always choosing me. We never had sex though. We went to the park and talked. He made me laugh every time I saw him. It was safe to say I was following for him. I confided in Tyler one afternoon. I told him the truth about how Ryan paid me for a conversation.

Tyler smiled. “It seems you got your desire. Tell him how you feel.”

”What if he rejects me?”

”He picks you up just to talk to you. Do you honestly believe he’ll reject you?”

Suddenly, Night came in. You’re not going to see this Ryan person again.”

Tyler frowned. “You were eavesdropping?” Night walked out without answering.
************************************************************
At 6 PM, I was at the meeting place as usual with Tyler. Ryan came like he did every Tuesday. Before he got fully to me, I raised my hand. “I can’t see you again.”

“What?”

“I’m sorry.”

“How can you be so cold to me? Don’t you have a heart?” I didn’t answer. “You know what, I regret meeting you.” He turned and started walking back to his car.

Without thinking, I shouted, “Wait!!” He turned to face me and I froze. Tyler pushed me towards him. I couldn’t put it in words, so I leaned up and kissed him. I pulled away and he was still. I feared the worst. The worst didn’t come from Ryan though. It came from Night who had seen the whole thing. You could tell just by looking at him that he was mad.

“I forbade you from seeing him. And what do you do? You kiss him.”

“I had to.” I was slapped across the face and fell from the force.
“Listen Paul, you work for me. I own you. You’ll do what I say.”

I stood up shakily. “How about this? I will not work for you any longer.”

“That’s a bluff. You’ll never be accepted into society because of what you’ve been doing for the last 9 months.”

“I don’t care. I’ll make do.”

Night smirks. “I didn’t realize you were so defiant. Let’s see how I can change that.” He pulled out a revolver and aimed it at me. I froze in terror. He scratched his chin as if thinking. “On second thought, you wouldn’t feel the pain because you’d be dead. Let me revise this.” Night switched the aim to Ryan.

“No!” I yelped.

“You should never let anyone know your weaknesses.” He took off the safety and pressed the trigger. Without thinking, I ran in front of Ryan and took the shot in my stomach. I collapsed as Night ran off.

“Paul!!!” Tyler ran over. Ryan knelt down and put my head on his lap.

Ryan had tears rolling down his cheeks. “Why did you do that?”

“I wouldn’t have been able to live if I knew you were killed because of me.” I coughed up blood. I then turned to Tyler. “Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. You’ll see.”

Tyler’s lip quivered. “I love you. You’re my best friend.”

“You’re my best friend too.”

Ryan spoke up. “Paul, I need you to know something.”

“What is it Ryan?”

“I love you.”

I smiled. ” I was hoping you did because I love you too.”
************************************************************
Ryan had taken out his cell and called 911. By the time the ambulance arrived, Paul was already dead. He was smiling as if in peace. That was 6 years ago.

I’m lying on the couch as the front door opens. “Ryan, is that you?”

”Yeah babe.”
My boyfriend comes into the living room. We began dating 3 years after Paul’s death. In our hearts, we know that’s what Paul would have wanted.

“You’ve been crying.” Ryan stated.

“I was thinking about Paul. You know what today is?”

Ryan smiled sadly. “It’s the anniversary of his death. I’ve been trying to keep my mind of it.”

“I put the story in the mail.”

“It’s fits for today.”

Ryan came over to me and held me. I cried for Paul. It wasn’t fair. He had been so young. The night he died, I vowed to never forget him. I would spend April 26 every year in the house thinking about him. It was my private holiday. No matter what, I would go on living as well as his memory.
