Chapter 1: The Gate

“I told you,” Aravath hissed, “to kneel.”

Edwyn scowled back at the fearsome lord, refusing to move. It was one thing to be captured and hauled before Aravath in chains. But it was quite another for him to willingly get down on his knees before the notorious warrior.

He would rather die.

“Go to hell, you prickless fuck,” he spat.

Aravath only laughed. “If that’s an enticement for me to turn you over the table, you’ll have to try a bit harder. I’d sooner fuck my own brother than touch the likes of you, you disgusting little Welythian.”

The great lord towered over Edwyn, arms crossed on his chest. He stood with his legs apart, his long black hair shining in the firelight. Darkness had fallen and the castle was bathed in shadows and the flickering light of the torches and candles that lined the stone walls. If it had been daytime, Edwyn might have seen that Aravath eyed him with a bit more interest than his cool reception suggested.

But Aravath was just as stubborn as Edwyn and far too proud to admit that he found the rebellious young Welythian exactly the sort of man he found attractive. Edwyn’s good looks—his handsome blond hair, intense dark eyes and outrageously alluring physique—were only part of the appeal. It was Edwyn’s passion that Aravath was drawn to most. Of course, he couldn’t even allow himself to entertain these inclinations in a carnal manipulation of his thoughts. Edwyn was an enemy; he would be punished, not caressed.

Even rape was too good for him.

Aravath took a step forward and grabbed Edwyn by the hair, forcing him to his knees. “I said, kneel slave!”

Edwyn was no match for the warrior’s strength, much though he detested having to submit to anything Aravath wanted. He bit his lip to keep from crying out when his knees met the hard stone floor. “Get your hands off me,” he snarled.

“I shall put my hands wherever I like. You’re mine now.”

“I’ll kill you. I’ll find my opportunity, don’t think I won’t.”

“Is that supposed to frighten me?” Aravath laughed. He was enjoying the softness of Edwyn’s hair in his hand, and he tightened his grip, yanking the man's head back and leaning down to whisper in his ear. “You’ll do exactly as I say. You know what I want. Speak the incantation to unlock the gate.”

“Never!”

“You will obey me. If you do not, I’ll have your entire family killed, one after the other, right in front of you.”

Edwyn fell silent, his heart beating hard at this threat. It was one thing to be punished by Aravath, but quite another to watch loved ones be killed.

“You wouldn’t.” The words came out far more pleading and weak than he had intended.

Aravath smiled. This was exactly what he wanted. Edwyn was cowering. “You know I will.”

“You...you’re despicable,” Edwyn whispered.

“I want that incantation. Say it.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“I’m in no mood for games. We both know you’re a gatekeeper.”

“I don’t...know what you’re talking about,” Edwyn insisted.

“Liar!”

“Please!” Edwyn cried, deciding suddenly to change his tactics. “Let me go!”

Aravath leaned closer, grinning. “That’s it. Beg, Edwyn. Not that it will do you any good.”

“You fucking bastard!”

“Ah, we’re back to being the rebel, it seems? Fine. I’ll enjoy whipping you tonight while we’re waiting for your family to arrive. Although, Edwyn, we both know you’re going to submit to me eventually. Why not just give me what I want now?”

“I don’t know anything about the gate,” Edwyn protested.

“We’ll see about that.”

“I don’t!”

“Hmmm. That’s not what my men told me.”

“You have bad informants, then.”

Aravath sighed. “Very well. We’ll play this your way. I’ll start out with a good whipping. Let’s see if that loosens your tongue a bit. Kayton!”

A man who had been standing quietly in the shadows, watching this entire scene unfold, now stepped forward from behind one of the hall pillars. “Yes, my liege?”

“Bring me my whip.”
