Prologue: The First Spark
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Hello, and welcome to my first story. This story is based somewhat closely on actual events that happened quite recently in my life. It hasn't been an easy road, for myself and the others involved, but I felt that the steps I have taken to find the path I should take are the right ones.
DEDICATIONS: This story is dedicated to the two most important women in my life whom I keep in my heart, known in this story as Ayaki and Naru. Ayaki, I hope you find happiness with whomever you choose to spend your life with, and that I'll always be a close friend and a kindred spirit. And Naru, I feel that this has strengthened me and given me new life. I hope that, in due time, we grow closer and our bond stronger become stronger because of it.

Prologue: The First Spark
I’ve always loved Downtown. The hustle and bustle, the flow of constantly moving people…most times I follow the tide wherever it takes me, other occasions I just like to stand back and feel as if I’m the only one that’s stopped, like a boulder placed in the middle of a turbulent river. This time, however, I moved along with the flow to my destination: an arcade. A friend from work invited me to an arcade game tournament, and seeing as I had nothing to do that weekend, some time Downtown, in an area that I haven’t visited in a couple of years, was much needed.
I walked past the scent of cigarettes to the metallic scent of coins, the flashing of lights and the myriad sounds of video games, from the screeching of racing cars to the sounds of simulated fighting and the gunfire of shooting games. There was a rather large crowd of people surrounding a dancing game. I walked over and watched the two players move in sync as streams of arrows flowed up the screen, their score increasing exponentially with every step, half step and quarter-step. I felt like a kid in a crowd of adults. I didn’t play the specific type of dancing game, and I played for style rather than tournaments like this one.
“Hey! You made it!” I looked over and I saw my friend, Kuno, sitting on the floor cross-legged behind the machine. I walked over and sat on my haunches beside him.
“What’s up? Sorry I’m late. I had to grab something to eat.”
He shrugged. “Don’t worry.” He looked over to the young woman beside him. “This is my girlfriend Ayaki.”
I looked past him to the young woman next to him and offered my hand. “Pleased to meet you.”
There was something that happened that I couldn’t quite put my finger on the moment our hands touched, but I didn’t think to pay it any more attention than a passing thought. “Good to meet you.”
Kuno got up as soon as the two guys at the dance game finished the song. “I’m up next,” he said as he hopped over to the dance pad.
I took Kuno’s spot next to Ayaki as his opponent picked a song. “So, Kuno tells me that you guys met in a tournament like this one…”

The afternoon wore on, and I even went with Ayaki to grab a late lunch for herself and Kuno while he faced another competitor. There was a subtle change to her once we left the arcade, though with us meeting for the first time, I never really took note of it. She seemed more open, like a bird freed from its cage.
“What was the deal with that girl fawning over Kuno?”
Ayaki frowned as she found her wallet. “Oh, her.”
“What? What’s up?”
“Let’s say she and I don’t get along very well.”
“And Kuno knows this?”
She shrugged. “He loves the attention.”
“I never realized there were dance-game groupies.”
She nodded. “Oh, they’re there, and she’s one of them. She’s probably the one I like the least.”
“Why’s that?”
She explained to me something that had happened not too long ago that was most embarrassing to her that, when she confided to Kuno, he didn’t really pay too much mind.
“How could he be so…ignorant?”
Ayaki shrugged. “I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter anymore. I really don’t care.”
I frowned in thought as we returned to the arcade…

I didn’t know Ayaki at all at that time, but her annoyance and passiveness concerned me. Looking back on everything, I realize now that something stirred within me, something that lay dormant for a very long time. And as I continue to look back, what she confided in me about our first encounter was true.
Something inside her gave her a very cryptic statement.
…You meet the person that will change your life…
Little did I know that it rang true to me as much as it did to her…
