Prologue

A/N: This story is co-written with Elaine

-- Outside Paris, 1647 --

Field Marshal Marcus Baker was attached to the inquisitorial squad lead by the Grand Inquisitor Thalmos, inspecting the local villages in the French countryside surrounding Paris as the villagers have been reporting ghost like apparitions.

"Thalmos, I will take some of the men over this way, see what we can find", said Marcus as the sun began to fall beyond the horizon, settling in dusk.

"Wait for us if you find the witch or witches involved in this trickery", said Thalmos.

"Ok men, spread out and call out if you find something", ordered Marcus.

"Yes sir", replied the battalion.

As true night approached so did danger and it wasn't long before the first shouts and screams were heard.

"Sir.. they are everywhere", said a startled officer.

"Officer, take a hold of yourself, we need to find the others", said Marcus.

They walked for a while with nothing anywhere near until they came towards a clearing and they heard some leaves scattering.

They entered the clearing and took in the scene before them. The bodies of the inquisitorial squad were laid out on the ground with their throats ripped out.

Marcus leaned over and inspected the body of Grand Inquisitor Thalmos and found two neat puncture marks in the side of his mangled neck.

"This doesn't look like the work of witches Officer, this looks like some kind of animal", said Marcus.

"Whatever it was, it killed them all", said the officer.

"Yes..", trailed off Marcus as he raised his hand after hearing twigs breaking nearby.

"There's something there", whispered the officer.

"Yes, I can hear it", said Marcus.

As soon as he said that the officer clutched at his throat as a white wispy being charged at him and smashed him against the tree knocking him out.

Marcus noticed a pale white figure darting between the trees and shouted,

"WITCH!" and gave chase, his plate armour rustling as he ran towards the figure who suddenly stopped.

As Marcus raised his sword, ready to run it through the creature, it turned around and snarled, baring its fangs. It knocked him to the ground and with brutal force, tore away the armour and cloth covering his shoulder and rammed its fangs into his neck.

Marcus screamed in pain as the creature drained his blood from his neck. As his life was fading away the creature thrust it's hand inside his gut and ripped out something that glowed with an ethereal light. The creature snarled once more and then drained the last of his blood, letting him slide to the forest floor.
