chapter 1

please review! I love reviews, even bad ones. they make me feel loved.

When Josie Reynolds was growing up she hated school more than anything else in the world. She’d gladly go to the doctors for a shot or to the dentist to get a cavity filled if it got her out of school for a day. At first the hatred was because of other students. Once Josie hit high school that all changed. Kids didn’t pick on her anymore and she had friends, but the teachers weren’t exactly what you’d call enthusiastic about their work. Things weren’t fully explained, everyone had to work from their books, you needed to borrow the same book as 20 other students at the library, couldn’t draw on desks, and hours of homework. Josie couldn’t handle it and halfway through her second year of ninth grade, dropped out. She was going to go to night school and get her GED, work during the day and have a head start at life since she was only 16. All that changed when Josie’s mother, Linda, saw a commercial for Job Corps.

“That looks like it would be perfect for you. Get your GED AND learn a trade at the same time.” Linda had said.

“But mom, I was gonna go to night school and get a job. Remember?”

“But that looks so much better. I’m going to call the number. And no arguing; nothings certain yet, I just want more information.”

Linda called and set up an appointment with a recruiter for a few days later. There, any questions she had were answered and Josie was enrolled. She was shipped out a few weeks later to live on campus an hour and a half away from everyone she knew and loved. The campus was beautiful in a creepy sort of way; it had once been a huge mental hospital. Huge meaning that the one campus now held both a college and Job Corps, a cemetery full of old patients and a football field along that were all surrounded by several hundred acres of dense forest. There were 9 enormous buildings though only 6 were being used. Two of the three unused buildings were the “old dorms”. Both of those buildings had three stories and probably hundreds of rooms. They were sealed off because they were “old and unsafe”. The third was off limits because it was storage. The other five, a school/cafeteria/business clerical, the cement masonry building, the painting and decorating/nursing building, the recreation building, and last but not least the home builders institute; plumbing, electrical wiring, and carpentry. There was a new building behind HBI for all the equipment and down a dirt road through the woods for about 40 feet was the football field. There was a guard shack at the gate, and a bus stop. Then, the was the new dorms. An ugly + shaped building that stood out like a sore thumb because of the modern look while surrounded by buildings that were protected by the historical society. The Dorms were built on a hill so the first floor was half underground. The first floor was all offices and conference rooms. The second floor; which was half first floor on the rising hill, was the boys dorms and above that, the girls dorms. Four wings, north, south, east and west naturally. Each wing slept 34 a floor. That was two hundred and seventy two “coworkers” between the ages of 16 and 24. Of course there were 15 or so more; non-residents that came in from town. Josie followed the woman giving the tour only faintly hearing the information. She was too busy trying to find a way out. After the tour Linda left and just when Josie thought the worst had come, the bell rang to end class.

Josie and Linda had arrived and took the tour while class was in session so Josie hadn’t seen any of her “coworkers” yet. Josie and the other “new employees” had been in a smoking area at the top of the hill when the bell rang and moments later the 15x15’ cement square was covered to overflowing with people tying to get their first cigarette in an hour. Josie was unpleasantly surprised to find out 90% of the men only liked rap and called themselves “gangstas”. 8% spoiled jocks that was sent here to learn a lesson and the other 2% is a handful of people different from other people; a couple ravers, a freak, and a few assholes. The girls were about 30% recovering drug addicts looking to straighten out, 40% single moms looking to start a career, 10% sluts and 20% that didn’t have the money for other schools. Josie never had many friends but so far it seemed limited to the ravers, the freak, and maybe the asshole that was with them.
Josie wasn’t a freak but more of an individual. Josie did what Josie wanted to do, wore what she wanted to wear. It only seemed natural that she’d be an outcast here seeing as how her mom also abandoned her. Her day was getting worse and worse. Not that there was anything wrong with only having a few friends. She just couldn’t stand rap and now she was surrounded by it. The clothes, the music, the attitude. After a 10 minute appraisal of her “coworkers” Josie and the other “new employees” were brought to the dorms. After being shown to her room Josie was dragged outside by Jackie, her room mate. Jackie was pulling Josie towards the smoking section on the hill pausing along the way to show everyone her new room mate. Josie eventually made it to a bench that the two ravers were sitting on. One was large, easily over 6 feet when he stood and the other was average sized. The large one, who wore glasses, was named Chris. The smaller one was Jay. Her and Jackie were making small talk with the ravers when someone tapped on Josie’s shoulder. Josie spun around to find herself face to face and much too close for comfort to the freak that introduced himself as Nick and proceeded to sniff a quick line from her breasts to just below her ear. Josie pushed him away and then moved to the other side of the ravers. Jackie brought Josie back to their room an hour later, having went to eat dinner after talking to Jay and Chris. Josie remembered seeing the asshole with them after class but she hadn’t seen him at all while she was out of the room… not even at supper. She decided to forget it, she was developing friendships with Jackie and Jay and Chris. She guessed she could be friends with Nick too but she wasn’t sure she wanted to be friends with Nick. Josie had been friends with freaks before but never did they just say “Hi I’m Nick.” and sniff her. It wasn’t a little sniff either, Josie felt violated by it.
Josie was a virgin. She had experience kissing and that was about it. Josie was a fish out of water. She’d lived a sheltered life compared to the people around her. Jackie was 16 when she had her son and Josie couldn’t imagine being pregnant and having a kid being only 16 herself. She didn’t fall asleep until the early hours of the morning only to be woken up at 6am by a woman yelling “GOOD MORNING LADIES!” at the top of her lungs. Josie showered, got dressed and did her make up before going out to the smoking section. It was about 6:30 and there was only 3 other people out there. Two gangstas and the asshole she‘d seen with Jay and Chris the day before. Josie stood by herself off to the side smoking a Marlboro while one of the gangstas bought a couple cigarettes off the asshole. Josie turned to where the sun was coming through the trees and was enjoying the peace of the moment until someone yelled.

“HEY YOU! YOU! GET OVER HERE.”

“Me?” Josie replied as she turned to face the “asshole” who was sitting on a bench.

“Yeah you. Come here.”

“Okay.” she said as she crossed the distance between them.

“Sit down.” he said, grabbing her hand and pulling her down next to him on the bench. “You’re new. What’s your name?”

“Josie. What’s yours?”

“I’ll tell you when I want you to know. Why are you out here so early?”

“I dunno. Felt like it I guess.”

“You’re a little overweight.” he said easily as if observing the weather.

“Yes I know. But thanks for reminding me.” Josie knew bullies, and knew they did what they did for a reaction. So Josie refused to give one. “I should take up walking… work off a couple pounds.” she thought aloud.

“A couple pounds? You need to drop like 20 pounds to be cute.”

“Good point. But I wont do it to be ‘cute’, I should do it because it’s the healthy thing to do.”

“Then you should quit smoking.”

“Not yet. You can’t expect me to lose 20 pounds and quit smoking at the same time, can you?”

“You can do it. Guys don’t like girls that smoke.”

“SPEAK FOR YOURSELF BRIAN! I THINK GIRLS LOOK SEXY WHEN THEY SMOKE.” one of the gangstas yelled.

“I’m not looking for a guy. And when I do I won’t be looking for someone that wants me to change.”

“Good luck finding that. There’ll always someone trying to change people.”

“Like you telling me to drop 20 pounds and quit smoking?”

“Yeah but that’s to improve your health.”

“But you’re still telling me to change, Brian.”

“Whatever. I’m going to breakfast. You coming, hungry hungry hippo?”

“Naw, I think I’ll stay here and enjoy the morning.”

“Starving yourself doesn’t really help you lose weight you know.”

“I know but it beats eating with you. Enjoy your breakfast.” Brian stormed off towards the cafeteria and once he was out of hearing range the gangstas started chuckling.

“You handled that well.” gangsta one said.

“Yeah.” number two agreed “Brian usually gets the new girls crying with that shit. After a couple weeks you get used to it I guess. Most girls seem to. The guys don’t get off as easy. Brian’s a fighter, not a lover and that boy can fight.”

“He’s just looking for a reaction.” more people were outside now, smoking, en route to breakfast or both. 99% male, the girls didn’t emerge until 7:30. Josie went through the day filling out a medical history and learning about the different courses. The “new employees” were taken to lunch but the tomato soup with skin wasn’t something Josie could stomach. So Josie skipped lunch for an extended cigarette break and at 3:30 when classes were over for the day she went back to the smoking area.

“Hey hippo. Come here. Where were you at lunch?”

“I was right here for lunch.”

“What’d I tell you about skipping meals?”

“I didn’t plan to skip it. I stood in line and got to the counter and when I saw the “soup du jour” I decided it would probably be healthier not to eat it.”

“You could have had a sandwich or a salad. Or both.”

“Can you stop? I’m not here to discuss my eating habits. My cigarette is done, I’m going to the dorms now. I’ll see you later Brian.”

“Dinner runs from 5 to 6. I’ll be at the entrance to the girls dorm at 5 to escort you and make sure you eat.”

“You shouldn’t say things like that so loud. People will start to think you care. That could ruin your image.” Josie turned from Brian and walked away. Like she’d really put herself through the torture of eating with him. She had to admit she was pretty hungry now though… so hungry she would have pulled the skin off and ate the tomato soup.
