Prologue: Separate Ways
AUTHOR'S NOTE: I recently listened to City High's song "What Would You Do?" and it gave me an inspiration to write something new. I figure that if I keep writing things that come to mind, I may find inspiration for my other works instead of suffering Writer's Block. Enjoy! Reviews and/or constructive criticisms are greatly appreciated!
ADDITIONAL DISCLAIMER: I don't own City High or their song What Would You Do?
Roads Leading Back
Prologue: Separate Ways
“Why are you leaving?”
James turned away from the window, tears in his eyes. “I have to. I don’t have enough money to rent an apartment, and the job I have now wouldn’t be enough to take care of myself, let alone both of us. My parents don’t want me staying in this town on my own.”
“There’s something else, Jimmy.”
“Jen, it’ll kill me if I tell you. Don’t make me say it.”
Jennifer took a step back. “What, Jimmy? Please, tell me.”
James sighed and shook his head as he turned around again and leaned on the window. “My stepfather doesn’t like you, and because of him, my mother is starting to feel the same way.”
Her jaw fell in a silent gasp.
“I didn’t want to say it,” he said, shaking his head again and punching the wall. “That damn bastard is making us move, simply because he doesn’t like you!”
“Then tell him you want to stay!”
James bit back tears, though they began to stream down his cheeks. “I have, Jennifer, I have. He doesn’t listen. I’ve confronted him more than enough times…”
Jennifer’s face went white as she strode up beside him. “That’s why…”
James nodded slowly as he sobbed helplessly. “He broke my arm, he beat me senseless…”
“That’s why you had that cast,” she finished. “The black eyes, the scars on your body…”
“I never wanted you to know,” he sobbed. “I never wanted you to see me lose to anybody for what I believed in.” He turned to her. “All I wanted was for us to be happy. I wanted to be the tough guy in front of others so that no one could call you those things, so I could defend you.”
Jennifer’s eyes began to water. “Jimmy, I never cared about what others called me.”
“I know,” he interrupted. “It bugged me because I don’t see you as white trash, because you’re not.” He straightened up and touched her cheek with his fingertips. “You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen, the nicest girl I’ve ever met.” He smiled weakly. “You’re the only person that gave me room to find my true calling.”
Jennifer laughed as tears fell from her eyes. “You’ll be the best author ever, Jimmy,” she said. “I don’t care if you spend your days flipping burgers or hauling furniture onto a truck, I know I’ll see your books on the bestseller shelves someday.”
“See? No one’s ever told me that, Jenny. All anyone tells me is how good I’ll be in sports, or how I’ll be an amazing doctor. My stepfather doesn’t even care, and my mother doesn’t even talk to me anymore.”
“Don’t you have relatives in the city?”
James shook his head. “No, not anymore. My aunt moved away after my uncle died, and I’m still too young to live on my own.”
Jennifer took his face in her hands. “Jimmy, baby, I know this is going to be a rough time for you, and I may never see you again.” She smiled weakly. “Let me give you something to remember me by, something that your stepfather will never be able to take away…”

A/N: I know it was short, but if I put in any more, I might end up ruining the flow of the prologue and the rest of the story. Hope to see you again soon!
