Eye Of The Beholder

Eye Of The Beholder

The Graveyard:

When the world is telling you that beauty is everything how can love come to a creature hidden because of his physical difference.

‘Why have you brought me here Darren? You know I have to be home soon.’

Lilly tried to pull her hand free of that of her much stronger boyfriend. This wasn’t the most romantic place she had ever been and certainly didn’t want to be here in the middle of the night. The old graveyard that marked the end of the town was always considered a no go area for the weak of heart. Lilly had no real compunction to enter it but Darren had said he had a surprise for her and she trusted him not leave her alone for too long in a place like this.

‘ Don’t you trust me baby? I told you I have a surprise for you!’

‘You know I hate it when you call me baby!’

Walking further into the graveyard Lilly could feel the hairs on the back of her neck standing on end at midnight this really wasn’t the place for her. The air was cold but it was the faint mist was wrapped around her like arms that she felt the most. It felt alive. Darren was over six foot and could easily protect her from anything but even that didn’t reassure her here.

‘Darren I want to go home I’m sorry if I spoil your surprise but I really don’t feel comfortable here please can we go back?’

‘No it’s just round here!’

He took her round another treed area and before Lilly was a blanket and wine laid out like a picnic. Lilly had to admit the thought was nice just not the location or time.

‘Darren this is wonderful just couldn’t you have don’t this in the day and somewhere a little more romantic and not as creepy?’

Smiling down at her five foot ten frame Darren’s eyes filled with an emotion Lilly could quite read. He pulled her further over to the blanket and pushed her into a seating position. He then moved himself into the same position in front of her. Darren leaned over and poured two glasses of the wine and placed one in front of her .

‘Let’s have a drink and then I will take you back ok? Just one glass I went to a lot of trouble to do this for us!’

Lilly didn’t want to stay but he was right he had gone to so much trouble just for her. So she nodded and picked up the glass in front of her. Nothing was said as the slowly sipped their wine. The air seemed to be getting colder and the night darker . She had had enough Lilly downed the remaining contains of her glass and stood. Yet that didn’t go to plan as she swayed the wine had gone straight to her head.

‘You ok baby you look a little unsteady? Why don’t you sit down for a little while more until the wine has warn off?’

Darren dragged Lilly back down onto the blanket next to him. He replaced his own glass on the grass and held Lilly’s face between both of his hands. His lips were cold but not only from the night air, there was something else there too. Lilly placed her hands on his chest but felt no strength as she attempted to push him away. It was as though she were a doll.
‘Darren stop please I don’t feel well. I want to go home!’

Even to her own ears she sounded weak. Wine didn’t usually do this to her on one night out Lilly and her best friend had gone through four bottles of the same wine and still managed to walk home. This wasn’t right ! Darren wasn’t stopping either his hands had moved down from her face and were making a move to her breasts.

‘Darren please stop’

Lilly could even move her arms now they just lay on his lap motionless.

‘Don’t worry baby you will enjoy this I promise I told you once you relaxed everything would be good between us.’

Lilly could hardly understand those words in her head. He had said that to her before but that was in the back seat of his car when he had first made a move on her. She had quickly put an end to it. This wasn’t what she wanted. Darren wasn’t right. This was suppose to happen somewhere different. What did he mean about relaxing? Lilly couldn’t make her brain work properly. She could feel him beginning to remove her shirt the goose bumps were chased up her body by the cold air. Darren moved his head to lick his way across her chest. Lilly closed her eyes and felt the tears trickle down her cheek. She didn’t want this She tried to communicate it but no voice remained. Her lips shaped the word NO but no sound. Opening her eyes she could see Darren laying her out but could feel nothing she was numb.

Lilly just closed her eyes. If she couldn’t see it she could pretend it wasn’t happening. For what felt like hours she lay there in real time it was only a few minutes. Lilly kept singing happy songs in the head until something changed. She heard a muffled sound which prompted her to open her eyes just in time Darren being thrown across the graveyard. Lilly looked above her to see the shadowy figure looming above her . Then five words were spoken .

‘No one hurts my queen.’

With that Lilly‘s brain had finally had enough and shut down completely. Darkness fell.
