Chapter One: Beautiful Stranger
Brown eyes gazed out a foggy window, as a car drove through the cold afternoon. It was the dead of winter, the trees standing in bare form. The sun was beginning to set, turning the sky a great many colors. The car turned onto a long winding road, revealing some of the largest houses known to man.
Jase watched as he past many houses, each bigger than the last. He could of drawn a map of the street, he knew it so well. Jase sat in silence as the car turned into a long driveway. His dad parked the car, and put his hand on Jase’s shoulder.
“Jase, have fun tonight.” His dad said.
“Thanks” Jase replied, opening the door.
“And don’t forget, keep checking in with us.” His dad added.
Jase just turned and smiled at his dad, before he got out of the car. He slowly walked up the long path to the enormous front door. Jase ran his hand through his long shaggy brown hair, as he reached the door. His hand quivered as he reached out to ring the doorbell. He couldn’t believe he was doing it, he couldn’t believe he was seeing them again.

~Three Days Ago~
Jase lay in the cold jade green grass with his best friend, looking up at the stars. The moonlit park was filled with laughter as the two friends joked with each other. They smiled, as they told each other all the secrets of their lives.
“Amanda, I’m so glad you’re in my life.” Jase said.
“I’m happy we’re friends too.” Amanda replied.
“I love how we’re completely honest about each other, like you’re the only person who knows I’m bi.” Jase said.
“And I’m honored to know. We’ll be friends forever.” Amanda said.
“Mmhmm, we’ll be old wrinkly partners in crime.” Jase said, sticking out his tongue.
“You know it.” Amanda said.
“So, what do you think about Fire Island this summer?” Jase asked.
Before Amanda could say anything back, Jase’s phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket, and eyed the caller id. His mouth fell open as he saw who it was. His mind cluttered with thoughts as a name ran through his head, Brendan.
“I don’t believe this…” Jase said.
“What? Who’s calling you?” Amanda asked.
“Brendan.” Jase answered.
“Who?” Amanda asked.
“My old best friend… We haven’t talked since middle school, two years ago.” Jase said.
“Well… Are you gonna pick up?” Amanda asked.
“I dunno.” Jase said.
“I think you should.” Amanda said.
Jase looked into Amanda’s eyes, then back at his phone. He read over the number again, just to make sure it really was Brendan. He sighed, as he flipped his phone open. He raised the phone to his ear, and breathed deeply.
“Hello?” Jase said.
“Hi.” Brendan said.
“Brendan.” Jase said.
“Bet you’d never guess I’d be calling you.” Brendan.
“Don’t tempt me, you know how much of a gambler I am.” Jase said.
“Exactly, that’s why I’m calling. I‘m having a huge Texas Hold ‘Em tournament Wednesday.” Brendan said.
“That’s nice.” Jase said.
“Com’on even if you’re still mad, and trust me I am fully aware you may not speak to me the whole time, you have a great chance to win a lot of money.” Brendan said.
“Exactly how much money?” Jase asked.
“Well, if you come the pot is Three-hundred-fifty.” Brendan said.
“That’s a lot of money…” Jase said.
“Too much to be turned down.” Brendan said.
“You’re right, that would just be-” Jase began.
“Crazy.” Brendan finished.
“What time?” Jase asked.
“Seven. See you then.” Brendan said.
Before Jase could say anything back, Brendan hung up. Jase closed his phone, and slid it into his jeans pocket. He looked back at Amanda, who had a puzzled look on her face.
“What did he want” Amanda asked.
“He wants me to play cards on Wednesday.” Jase said.
“Are you going to?” Amanda asked.
“I think so.” Jase answered.
“But I thought you didn’t like him.” Amanda asked.
“I don’t.” Jase said.
“Why not? What happened between you two?” Amanda asked.
“That, my dear, is a story for another day.” Jase said.

~Present Time~
Jase stood anxiously waiting for someone to open the door to Brendan’s house. He could feel the earth move under his feet as his nervousness built. He felt his heart skip a beat as he heard the door slowly open. Jase wanted to run away when he saw Brendan standing in the door way, studying him.
“You look…” Brendan said.
“Different?” Jase asked.
“Yes.” Brendan said.
“I lost weight, grew my hair, and got my braces off.” Jase said.
“You look good.” Brendan said.
“Now I can sleep at night, knowing you approve.” Jase said, sarcasm dripping on every word.
“I deserve that.” Brendan said.
“No, you deserve worse.” Jase said.
“I do. I just want you to know, I really am sorry.” Brendan said.
“Don’t… Just don’t bother.” Jase said.
Brendan just nodded, leading Jase into his house. Jase took off his shoes at the door, and followed Brendan into the kitchen. He saw seven kids sitting around a round kitchen table. Jase recognized a few from middle school, and sat down behind stacks of poker chips.
“Jase? Is that you?” Justin asked.
“Yeah…” Jase said.
“What happened to you? We thought you died or something.” Andrew asked.
“Worse, got sent to Catholic school.” Jase said.
“How’ve you been man?” Alex asked.
“Pretty good, how bout yourself?” Jase asked.
“Great.” Alex said.
“Are we all here?” Jase asked.
“Just waiting for Kevin.” Brendan said.
“Kevin?” Jase asked.
“Kevin S.” Brendan said.
“I don’t remember him.” Jase said.
“Well, you’ll meet him soon.” Brendan said.
Jase just began to count out his poker chips as all the other boys talked. As he counted, he couldn’t help but to feel someone’s eyes on him. Jase slowly looked up to see Brendan staring at him. Brendan opened his mouth to say something, but the doorbell rang.
Jase just went back to counting his chips as Brendan got up to answer the door. He could hear the front door open, and someone enter the house. Jase ignored the distraction, as he made sure he had the right amount of chips. He heard footsteps leading into the kitchen, as he finished counting his chips.
“Jase, this is Kevin, Kevin, this is Jase.” Brendan said.
Jase slowly looked up from his chip stacks, to see a boy the same age as him standing their. Jase’s mouth slightly fell open as he eyed over the boy. The first thing that caught Jase’s attention was the boy’s cerulean eyes. He was instantly lost in the nicest eyes he’d ever seen. The boy’s shaggy dirty blonde hair hung in his eyes, almost taking away from the nicest smile Jase has ever seen.
“Hi.” They said in unison.
“How are you?” Jase asked.
“I’m good, you?” Kevin replied, sitting across from Jase.
“Good.” Jase said.
Brendan sat next to Jase, much to his disapproval. He dealt out the first hand, and Jase looked at his cards. Ace, seven, both Spades. Not the greatest hand, but Jase decided to call. Most of the other players called the hand, and Brendan turned over the Flop. Jack of Spades, Two of Spades, and Five of Diamonds. On the Flush Draw, Jase bet One Hundred in chips. Only one person called, Brendan. Brendan flipped the next card, the Turn. The turn was Five of Spades. Jase just hit the Nut Flush, but only checked. Brendan bet Fifty in chips, and Jase took his time in calling. The River was Jack of Hearts. Jase faked a sigh, as he checked to Brendan. Brendan bet One Hundred, before Jase re-raised it to Five Hundred.
“The good ole Re-raise.” Kevin said.
“You know it.” Jase teased.
Brendan took his time, before he decided to call. He looked Jase right in his eyes, as he flipped over the Jack of Diamonds. Jase smirked as Brendan only had three of a kind, Jase had him easily beat. Brendan flinched as Jase flipped over his Ace high Spade Flush.
“You slow played the nut flush?” Brendan asked.
“Yeah, I did.” Jase said.
“Good hand.” Brendan said.
“Yeah.” Jase agreed.
“I like him, he crippled Brendan on his first hand.” Alex said.
“Yeah, but Brendan’s nothing compared to Kevin.” Justin said.
“So, you’re the hustler here?” Jase asked, looking Kevin in the eyes.
“Well, I’m not bad.” Kevin said.
“He’s never played with us, but we hear he wins every time.” Andrew said.
“Good… looks like some competition.” Jase said.
“Cocky?” Brendan asked.
“Just confident.” Jase said.
The next couple of hands were pretty empty, no one winning or losing too much. That is, until Kevin was dealer. He shuffled the cards as everyone bad mouthed some teacher. Jase felt a little out of it, not going to the same school as them. Kevin started to deal out the cards, as the hand began.
“Deal me something good.” Jase said.
“I’ll kiss your cards for luck.” Kevin said.
“You better.” Jase joked.
Kevin just smirked, before he brought his hand to his mouth. He softly kissed his fingers, and tapped Jase’s card. Jase laughed, as Kevin slid him the card. When Jase got delt his second card, Kevin kissed it the same way. Jase looked at his two cards, and blinked as he saw the King of Spades, and The King of Clubs.
Jase threw in his chips to call, as did most of the other people. Kevin burnt one card, and flipped three. King of Hearts, Three of Diamonds, Seven of Spades. Jase hit trips, and bet Three Hundred in chips. Two people called him, before Kevin flipped the next card. King of Diamonds. Jase had the nuts, the best possible hand.
“All in.” Justin said.
Justin just giggled as he looked over the table. Jase knew he was trying to bluff the quads, and simply smirked. Everyone folded, except Jase. He quickly called Justin. Justin’s expression quickly faded as Jase threw his chips in the pot.
“Whatcha got?” Jase asked.
“Full house, Sevens and Kings…” Justin said, flipping his cards.
“Ouch…I got quads.” Jase said, flipping his cards.
Everyone went crazy, as Justin felt his heart stop. He just lost, to Quad Kings. Kevin quickly burnt, and flipped the last card, the Jack of Clubs. Jase held out his hand, and Justin shook it. Jase smiled, as he raked in his chips, and began stacking them.
“Thanks man.” Jase said, looking at Kevin
“Anytime.” Kevin said.
“Kevin’s got the magic touch.” Alex said.
“Yeah he does, he’s my Kiss Factory.” Jase joked.
“You know it baby.” Kevin said.
The night seemed to never end, as the tournament dragged on for hours. As people were eliminated, their chips usually found their way to the stacks belonging to Kevin or Jase. Jase quickly realized that Kevin was skilled at the game, as he was warned. But Kevin also was his favorite person at the table. They had a strong connection from the moment they met, which only grew stronger throughout the night. Kevin kept up kissing his cards, and Jase kept up his lucky streak.
The final three consisted of Jase, Kevin, and Brendan. Most of the others had gone home, but few sat around the table watching the three boys. Kevin and Jase were about even in chips, but Brendan was obviously a short-stack.
“You ready for this?” Jase said.
“Just deal the cards.” Brendan coldly said.
“Don’t take it out at him cause you’re losing.” Kevin said.
“Yeah, it’s not my fault you don’t have the Kiss Factory kissing your cards.” Jase said.
They boys just laughed as Jase delt out the hand. Jase peeled up his cards to see Seven of Hearts, Two of Hearts. He thought of folding, but decided to fish. Brendan looked at his cards, and called the Big Blind. Kevin looked at his cards, and just smirked.
“I’ll put you all in, Brendan.” Kevin said.
“Oh Shit! You serious?” Jase said.
“Yup” Kevin said.
“I’ll let you take him down sweetie.” Jase said, folding.
“Thanks love.” Kevin joked.
Everyone looked at Brendan, who looked back at his cards. Jase could tell by Brendan’s face he didn’t have anything too good, but decent enough to call. Jase looked over to Kevin who looked confident. Brendan would have been a fool to call this hand.
“I call.” Brendan said.
Jase winced at the words, knowing Brendan just made the biggest mistake of the game. He watched as they flipped over their cards. Brendan had pocket Nines, while Kevin only had pocket Sevens. Kevin was dominated going into the hand, plus Jase had folded a Seven.
Jase quickly burnt a card, and flipped three. Eight of Diamonds, Jack of Spades, King of Hearts. Jase quickly burnt and flipped the next card. Queen of Clubs. Kevin want looking good at all, Brendan had a higher pocket pair as well as a straight draw. Jase finally burnt and flipped the last card. Seven of Hearts.
Jase couldn’t believe it, Kevin just hit the only card that could have won it for him. He had eliminated Brendan from the tournament, by sheer luck. Jase looked over at Brendan who had a shocked look on his face. Even after their past, Jase almost felt bad for him. Almost.
“That sucks man.” Jase said.
“Yeah.” Brendan said.
“I’m sorry.” Kevin said.
“Don’t be, I’m actually rather this heads up. It should be more interesting.” Brendan said.
“It should be fun.” Jase said.
“Yeah, it’ll be a good final two.” Andrew said.
“You’re both amazing card players” Justin said.
Kevin just nodded at Jase, who smiled back. Kevin delt the next hand out, not forgetting to kiss Jase’s cards. Jase softly laughed, before he looked at his cards, Ace of Diamonds, Nine of Diamonds. Brendan’s lucky hand. Jase played with his chips, before he Raised Five-Hundred. Kevin Re-Raised to One-Thousand. Jase simply called. Kevin burnt a card, and flipped three. Three of Diamonds, Seven of Diamonds, and Two of Hearts. On a Flush Draw, Jase bet another Thousand, but Kevin quickly called. Kevin burnt and Flipped the next card. Ace of Hearts. Now with a pair and the same flush draw, Jase bet one more Thousand. Kevin called, before flipping the final card. King of Diamonds. Jase had the Nut-Flush, and bet an additional Thousand. Kevin took his time, before he finally called.
“Whatcha got?” Kevin asked.
“Ace-High Flush.” Jase said, flipping over his cards.
“You got me.” Kevin said, laying down his cards.
Jase took the chip lead after that hand, but not by a lot. The next few hands were mainly in Jase’s favor, with a few going Kevin’s way. Jase’s chip lead only grew and grew as the two faced off. Though Jase had the lead, he knew this game was far from over. He knew Kevin could easily make a comeback, and win the pot.
“Having fun?” Brendan asked.
“Lots.” They said in unison.
They looked each other in the eyes, and that’s when Jase realized it. He was attracted to Kevin. Everything about Kevin was appealing to him. The boy had an amazing personality to match his attractive appearance. They both had a very similar sense of humor, and were making each other laugh the whole night.
Jase was pulled out of his thoughts as he felt cards hit is hands. He blinked as he realized Kevin just delt out the next hand. Jase looked down at his hand, King and Queen of Hearts. He simply called, as Kevin looked at his cards. Kevin showed no emotion as he thought of his next move.
“All in.” The boy said.
Jase looked back down at his cards, and then back at Kevin. Kevin only smiled at him, as Jase thought of the hand. He looked back at his cards, wondering if he should call. He looked back at Kevin, dead in the eyes.
“I’ll call.” Jase said.
Kevin just flipped over his cards, Pocket Kings. Jase looked away, as he flipped his. Kevin quickly Burnt a card and flipped Three. Jack of Hearts, Ten of Hearts, Seven of Diamonds. Jase’s mouth fell open, as the cards flipped. He was on a Royal Flush draw, the greatest hand possible. He had never gotten a Royal Flush, and was eager to get one. Kevin quickly burnt a card, than flipped. King of Diamonds. Kevin just hit Trips, but Jase wasn’t giving up, he had many outs. Kevin burnt a card, and flipped the last card Ace of Hearts. Jase was in shock, he just hit the Royal Flush, and won the game.
“Holy shit.” Justin said.
“Wow.” Andrew said.
“Sorry.” Jase said.
“Don’t be, great game.” Kevin said, smiling.
Jase just smiled, as he took his winnings from the pot. He counted his winnings to be Three-Hundred, mainly in twenties. He went around, and shook everyone’s hand, except Brendan. But when he got to Kevin he just smiled.
“You get a hug.” Jase said.
“Damn Right.” Kevin said.
Kevin pulled Jase into a hug, and held him for a second. Jase inhaled, as Kevin’s heavenly scent filled Jase’s nose. He was wearing the perfect amount of the greatest cologne Jase had ever smelt. But as soon as Jase was hugged, Kevin’s arms were gone.
“Well, I’m gonna go call my dad, and wait for him outside. Bye everyone.” Jase said.
“Bye.” Justin said.
“See you later.” Andrew said.
“It was nice to meet you.” Kevin said.
“It was good to see you again.” Brendan said.
“Wish I could say the same about you, Brendan.” Jase said.
Jase headed out of the room, and then out of the house. The cold air of the winter made him instantly regret waiting outside. He quickly took out his phone, and called his dad to come pick him up. Once he got off the phone, he sat down on the cold steps. He raised his face, to look up at the full moon.
Kevin and the rest of the kids sat around the table, making jokes to eachother. As he re-stacked chips, Kevin noticed something on the back of a chair, Jase’s jacket. Kevin quickly grabbed it, and ran out of the room.
Jase sat outside, shivering in the cold wind. The night air was sending chills down his spine. He was rubbing his arms, in an attempt to generate heat. His eyes narrowed as he heard the door open. Thinking it was Brendan, his anger built.
“What do you want?” Jase scoffed.
Jase looked back over his shoulder, and saw Kevin. Kevin was standing hold his jacket. Kevin walked over to Jase, and handed him the jacket. Jase quickly put the jacket on.
“Sorry about that… I thought you were-” Jase said.
“Brendan?” Kevin asked.
“Yeah…” Jase asked.
“What happened between you two?” Kevin asked.
“Long story.” Jase said.
“I see…” Kevin said.
The two sat in an awkward silence for a minute or two. Jase felt bad for being hostile, but him and Brendan had a dark past. He wouldn’t tell anyone what happened between them, not even Amanda. Though he felt bad for what he was doing to Kevin. He was taking out his anger on Kevin, the one who was trying to help.
“I’m sorry, but its really personal.” Jase said.
“No worries.” Kevin said.
“Thanks… For bringing me this.” Jase said.
“No problem .” Kevin said.
“Good game tonight.” Jase said.
“You too.” Kevin said.
Jase just smiled. Thought the subject had changed, the awkwardness was still there. Jase felt horrible, as if he was pushing Kevin away, when he only wanted to get closer with the boy.
“What’s your number?” Kevin said, breaking the silence.
“Huh?” Jase said.
“Sorry if that came out the wrong way, but you seem like a cool person, and in case you don’t come back to another card game we can still be friends.” Kevin said.
“Oh.” Jase laughed. “Six-Eight-Three-Zero-Nine-Five-Four.” Jase said.
Kevin took out his cell phone and programmed the number in. Jase just smiled as he looked into Kevin’s eyes. Kevin looked up for a minute, and completely stopped what he was doing. His mouth fell open as he looked into Jase’s eyes.
“What?” Jase asked.
“Oh nothing.” Kevin said, coming to his senses.
“Tell me.” Jase said, putting on a pout face.
“Its just…nothing.” Kevin said.
“Please?” Jase said, fake-frowning.
“The way the moon light is shining in your eyes…” Kevin said. “You look like someone I know.” He added.
“Oh.” Jase said, not knowing how to take that.
“And now you think I’m some freaky child molester.” Kevin joked.
“Not at all.” Jase said.
“Lair!” Kevin exclaimed.
Before Jase could say anything, he saw his dad pull into Brendan’s drive way. He looked into Kevin’s eyes one last time before he stood up. He began heading towards his car, before he turned back to Kevin.
“Goodnight. It was really nice meeting you.” Jase said.
“G’night. Yeah, it was nice meeting you too.” Kevin said.
Unknown to the two boys someone was watching them from inside the house. Brendan sat in his dining room watching the two of them. His lips curved into a smile as he watch Jase walk away.
“Looks like I’m quite the matchmaker.” Brendan said.

Ok, I know this is a lot of poker, and poker fans might not like it, but trust me THIS IS NOT all about poker. I don’t even know if I’m going to do another poker game.
Ok so yeah, please stick with this one, I have very high hopes for this story! I have some amazing ideas for where this is going so the wait shouldn’t be too bad, but as always the more reviews, the faster I type.
