Piercing blue eyes shone in the darkness, seeing what others could not. Though the crowds could not see him, they somehow knew he was there, watching them, stalking them. A prickle of sensation running down their spines, warning them away from the darkness. He liked it there, he was safe there; it was his home. After centuries of moving in the shadows, there was no other place for him to go. Movement off to his left startled him out of his thoughts. Tonight, he was the one being hunted, and it would take all of his skills to stay alive. Pulling his jacket closed, he walked out of the woods and melted into the crowd, slipping away like a wisp of smoke.

Maharette was the picture of statuesque beauty. She was tall, thin, great rack, great legs, pretty face; the whole shebang. Her long black hair was curly, but not frizzy, and her almond shaped violet eyes were surrounded by a thick feathery curtain of black lashes that most girls would kill for. She even had a rich and famous father. You would think that she would have tons of friends and be the life of every party, but she was not. She had few friends, and preferred to spend most of her time in the library. She was shy, she wore clothes that hid her perfection, and she always avoided social situations. No matter how much her father tried to force her, she shied away from the spot light. She had turned down multiple offers to model for top line fashion designers and she never accepted the many movie roles she was offered. Her personality was totally the opposite of what many people would stereotype her with.
Maharette was a night owl. She liked to stay awake late and stare at the stars. She walked the grounds of her father’s estate until the early hours of the morning. Her skin was alabaster white because she never went out in the daylight. Even when she had to, like to go to school, she would wear clothes that covered her entire body, and wear extra strong sun block to protect her skin. Maharette was an enigma to most of her female classmates, your typical bleach blonde tanned sun goddesses. All of the boys wanted to date her, but she turned everyone down. Most people thought she had some sort of mental disability, but no one cared enough to find out for real. They just shunned her and got on with their lives. And that is just the way she liked it. She enjoyed being alone, especially at night. Her solitary lifestyle fit her, and she was perfectly comfortable with who she was.
This night started out like most other nights. Maharette’s father bugging her to do something with her life, and Maharette locking herself in her room. She opened the French doors that lead to her balcony. Walking out into the cool night air, she took a deep breath to calm herself. She was tired of her father’s nagging, he just didn’t understand. She didn’t want to live her life in the spotlight, everyone privy to personal life and trivializing it in every magazine and on every television show. She just wanted to be left alone. Let the world forget she ever existed. She didn’t care what anyone else thought, just leave her alone and let her get on with her life. If only he would listen to her and understand where she was coming from. But of course, since he enjoyed the limelight, he could never understand why his daughter shied away from it.
She sat on the railing and leaned her back against one of the columns. She stared into the distance, letting the darkness clear her mind of all her cares. A shadow was moving through the trees at the edge of her father’s property. Actually, it was more like stumbling. Maharette watched as the figure made its way closer to her. Just as it came parallel with her perch, the figure collapsed to the ground. Her curiosity piqued, Maharette used her secret stairs to reach the ground. Carefully, so as not to trip any security alarms, Maharette made her way to where she saw the figure drop. Due to her many nocturnal adventures, she had excellent night vision. This aided her in discovering what the mysterious figure looked like.
He had short dark hair, shadowed eyes, and cheekbones that would make most women melt. His clothes were tattered and dirty. He was bleeding from some serious looking wounds. Maharette kneeled down to see if he was still breathing, and to see if there was anything she could do. She touched his shoulder, making the stranger sit bolt upright. There was a terrified look in his dark eyes that spoke to her in ways she couldn’t explain.
“Stay away from me!” His voice was a hoarse whisper. He backed up into a tree and huddled there, frantically looking for a way out.
“Shh, it’s all right, I won’t hurt you. I saw you collapse from my balcony, and I was worried.”
“Go away, I do not need your help.”
“From what I can see, you do. What happened? Were you mugged?”
“It is none of your concern. Please leave me alone, please.” There was a tone to his voice that should have scared her, but Maharette wasn’t phased.
“I promise I won’t ask any questions, I just want to help you.” Maharette begged as she saw the man sway from the blood loss.
“You want to help me do you? Fine, have it your way.” The man lunged at her, pinning her to the ground. She felt him bite her neck, and then everything went dark.

Eli couldn’t believe that he had actually let himself get caught. He had escaped capture hundreds of times, always giving any want-to-be slayer the slip. But this one had something else, something special about him. At least Eli assumed it was a him; as he had been too busy defending himself to really take a good look. And then that girl had actually offered her help, without even asking one question. There was something about that girl, something in her eyes, which had made Eli feel guilty about the way that he had treated her. But in truth, she really had brought it upon herself. He had needed to feed, and she had happened to show up right when he couldn’t wait anymore.
He lowered himself slowly into his bed. Some of the wounds he had were taking longer to heal. It was actually kind of worrying him, but Eli figured that a good long day of sleep would help. Still, those violet eyes were haunting him, calling him to her. Even in the sleep of death she called to him. That was more worrying to Eli than his wounds would ever be.

It had been three weeks since Maharette had been bitten by her dark stranger. At first she couldn’t believe what had happened to her. Vampires didn’t exist; they only walked in movies and cheap romance novels. But when she had woken up a few hours after the attack on her balcony with a sore neck, she couldn’t deny it. She had been bitten by a vampire, and he had let her live. That was the thing that surprised her the most. He had let her live, he didn’t even leave her lying in the woods.
So she had been keeping a quiet watch out for the mysterious vampire. Maharette didn’t know why, but she wasn’t afraid of what he was. She figured that she should be, but it didn’t scare her at all. It was those eyes, a dark chocolate brown that glowed in the moonlight. They held wisdom, and age, and innocence as well somehow. They looked human, as if he still clung to his mortal emotions. They affected her in ways she didn’t want to admit, and all she could think of was that maybe she would get to see them again. She knew that it was highly unlikely, but she hoped that maybe he was as obsessed with her as she was of him.
Unbeknown to her, she was right. Every night for the last three weeks, Eli had lingered in the woods near her home after feeding. Sometimes he even forgot to hunt, because he got lost in the vision of her. He always managed to stay just out of sight, but always watching. It was almost like a competition to him, to see how long he could watch her without being seen. But the time had come for Eli to reveal himself, because what was left of his conscience wouldn’t leave him alone any longer. Keeping to the shadows, Eli crept up to Maharette’s balcony and snuck up behind her.
“Hello.”
Maharette jumped in surprise when Eli’s silky voice came from behind her. Turning around, recognition dawned the moment her eyes met his.
“It’s you.” Maharette’s voice was barely above a whisper. She couldn’t believe that he was actually there standing in front of her, so she reached out a shaking hand and touched his cheek to reassure herself.
“Yes. My name is Eli. I have come to apologize for my behavior the first time we met.”
“I completely understand. Vampires need to feed in order to heal. Besides, I didn’t even scar.” She showed him her neck to prove it.
“Interesting. Are you going to tell me your name, or do I have to guess?” Eli inquired while settling himself on the balcony’s railing.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I completely forgot. I am Maharette, and it is a pleasure to meet you.” She held out her hand, which Eli took and proceeded to kiss the back of.
“Enchanted. I don’t usually get that kind of greeting from people who know what I am. I think I like it.”
Maharette giggled at Eli’s remark and made her self comfortable on the settee she kept on her balcony.
“I’m glad you like it. You may not have noticed, but I am not your typical female.”
“Yes, I have. I haven’t seen someone with violet eyes in decades.”
“Well, I inherited them from my mother’s family.” Maharette blushed in embarrassment. She wasn’t used to getting compliments like that. At least, she wasn’t used to caring about getting compliments like that.
There was a long uncomfortable silence between them, neither knowing quite what to say. So they ended up just sitting there, together in the moonlight, the silence finally feeling friendly. Eli stood and offered his arm, which Maharette took with a quirk of her eyebrow. He led her down onto the grounds, and started to lead her into the forest.
“Where are we going?” Maharette asked, trying to stay calm.
“Just walking, not to worry. I wish to speak with you, in private, and these trees are the perfect cover.”
“Oh, what did you wish to speak about?”
“I need to apologize. Hear me out before accepting it, what is left of my conscience has been bugging me for the last three weeks. I should have stayed by you until you woke up, to explain what happened and why I attacked you. I had been in a fight with another of my kind, and I was too weak to make it back to my lair. Something in you called to me, and I managed to find my way here in my delirium.”
“Something in me called to you? What?” Maharette was awed and confused.
“Yes, I haven’t quite figured out what, but I would like the chance to try and find out.” Eli had stopped and turned to face her. He had an emotion swirling in his eyes that Maharette couldn’t put a finger on. It was tempting, and attracting. Maharette felt herself falling into them, and welcomed the feeling of warmth that spread through her veins.
