Prologue
Prologue
Once upon a time, there was a world akin to heaven. It was inhabited by angelic beings who tended this land of harmony. When humans died, their souls went to this land. They would wander the flower-paths and dew-filled forests, and then, once finally content, move on. Ten was a land of enchantment, and the angels themselves were just as captivating.
In the center of Ten, surrounded by glittering water, was the god. No one knew where he came from, what his name was, but his dreams shaped Ten. The angels protected him, protected the land, helped it to thrive. Ten was utopia, Eden, paradise.
But then something went wrong.
Down on earth humans were killing other humans, and those who came up to the after-realm were filled with a hatred too deep to cure. These souls could not move on, and for centuries they sat in the shadows, watching the elation of the others, growing more and more filled with darkness. With every passing year, their ranks grew, and the god weakened. Now there were forests too twisted to walk in. Now there were gardens where the sun didn’t shine and the flowers grew with sharp thorns. Long gashes appeared daily on the emaciated god as the world was ripped open, and the angels couldn’t help. They were too afraid. Where once there was only celebration of life, there was now loathing of the living.
And Ten was not the only thing that changed. Those souls consumed by the dark were twisting, shifting into creatures of deepest nightmare. The angels tried to calm them, but it was too late. The ever-growing demon army was already set on destruction. Chaos took over Ten. The pacifistic angels could do nothing against sharp claws and tearing teeth. They were kidnapped, tortured, and there is only so much a body can take, even an immortal one. The trees cried out in pain as the forests burned. The god, who had always upheld the structure of the world, was dying.
As the air filled with choking ash, the last remaining angels gathered around their god, and prepared to do the only thing possible. Leave Ten. None of them knew what the results of this would be, but it was their last hope. If they could save the god, nothing else mattered.
As they spread their wings and picked up the frail deity, Ten began to crumble. Then, in one heart stopping moment, the whole planet shattered. Angels and demons alike where thrown to all corners of the four realms, and the god was lost.
For thousands of years, the angels searched for him.
But by the time he awakened, they had long since forgotten the timbre of his soul.
