Prologue
----------------
“What? Do you think I should?” The young woman stood in the middle of her room, looking with questioning eyes at her sister. She held up two different dresses. One was rather plain, made of blue-black wool and done up with little red jewels around the V neck collar, reaching well pass her knees. The other was flirtier, red silk and black lace. The main dress was made of deep red silk, swiping to her thighs and had a slit in it from hem to about two inches below where her hip would be. Thin strips of black lace trimmed the bottom and the slit. She had bought it on a whim and had never worn it. It might match her personality rather well, but she’d feel out of place wearing it in the places she went to.
“Come on, Nozara! You’ve got to wear it, girl! He’ll love it!” ‘He’ll…’ He didn’t have a name anymore to her; he was just a face she went to see every night. Playing the part of a good girlfriend.
“Yea, I guess. It won’t go with the place I’m going to though!” With a flick of her wrist, she flung the dress back into the closet, slipping on the plain black one. ‘He won’t even notice what I wear anyway.’ Her sister, Yukiko, just looked at her. Nozara was a pleasant enough looking young woman. With long blood red hair that reached just pass the small of her back and gentle golden hazel eyes, she stood out rather well in the mass of short haired blondes and blue eyed girls of her town. Even her own sister was an oddity, with her much shorter black hair and blue eyes. Nozara was built small and slender. Small, firm breasts were hid under the slightly baggy dress, her hips flaring wide and her waist slim. Her long legs peered out of her dress, looking slightly shorter in the god awful thing she wore. She sighed irritably.
“If you don’t like him… why do you continue to date him?” Yukiko asked plainly, not even giving the grace to look at her elder sister as she dug around in Nozara’s jewelry box.
“I don’t know… I just do!” For more years then she’d like to count, she’d done this routine, day after day. Each time, rushing home to get away from him and his flogging. His and his friends all loved to take note of her ill traits, not caring that she was in the room.
“One last time…”
“No! You’ve said that too many times!” The forcefulness of her sister’s words shook her, making her blink out of shock. “You’ll get out of that nasty thing and get into the red dress and go have a good time! Without him!” Nozara stared at her, her hands twitching at the idea of putting that dress on and going out for a real party and have real fun, without that lead weight dragging her down. Giving Yukiko a thoughtful look, she shook her head.
“I’m his girlfriend… I can’t just go running off to do as I please. It would sully his good name.” The words felt like razors on her tongue and hurt her ears. Yuki seemed just as ill pleased with her words as she was.
“So!? What has he done for your good name? Has he been just as faithful to you?” Nothing… no… That answers came to Nozara’s mind before Yuki had even finished her questioning. He didn’t deserve to have her be so loyal, not when he’d done nothing but hurt her, turned her name into a joke. Yes, she thought as she plucked the daring red dress out of the closet, a wide grin on her face, I’ll go have fun. To hell with him!
“You’re right! I need to forget about him and what he wants! I need to start thinking of myself!” Yuki nodded her head, attacking Nozara’s jewelry box with more vigor, picking out the best set she could find to go with the dress. Nozara all but tore the black dress off of her, sighing in sheer pleasure as she slipped into the red dress. She felt as if she were peeling years of heartache from her, casting off the shackles of years, as she pulled the dress on. She had decided. Once he discovered that she was out on the town, having no intent on coming to see him, he would be angry. She hoped that a brake up would follow. Little did she know that this night would turn her world upside down and leave it nearly unrecognizable.
