She sat at the foreign desk, typing quickly on the keyboard as a single tear
streaked down he face. She bit her lower lip to stop herself from out-right crying, only
letting single tears trail down her face. She was talking to her best friend online, trying to
explain what happened.

saw those fire trucks, L? well they were heading toward my house. when i
got there it was up in flames
HoutCinq5: OMG! are you ok? is your family ok??

firemen said that mom, dad, david, austin and rosco were all in the
basement and got trapped. they all burned to death.
HoutCinq5: OMG! im sorry Liz! how are you talking it? you have to
come over tonight and we’ll just be girls for the night and talk! OMG! im
so sorry
LostSoul102: L, i ... i dont know what to do! my family is dead and now
they’ve sent me to my aunts house cuz she’s my only family left that could
take care of me. I’m not in little C anymore, i cant come visit you and
cry my eyes out and i need it!
HoutCinq5: ... Liz! where are you? I’ll come to you!
LostSoul102: I’m in Hawaii, no way your coming to visit me! I dont
know what im gonna do. I gotta go, bye

Liz signed off of the Internet when she heard her aunt knocking on her door.
“Liz, dinner time, I have a surprise for you!” her aunt tried to sound happy but Liz
could hear the sad note in her voice.
She quickly shut down her computer and turned toward the mirror to see if her
eyes were red. A girl with crystal blue eyes started back at her. A rounded nose set
between her bright eyes. The girls hair was coal black and hung just below her shoulders
with blue streaks in it. The pink full lips clashed a little with her tanned skin.
Liz quickly wiped her tears away as she opened her door and headed toward the
kitchen. She put on a fake smile when she saw her dad’s sister, Kiki.
“Kik, I’m here,” Kiki had insisted that Liz call her Kik or Kiki. Liz quickly set the
table as Kik moved all the prepared food to the table, “So what’s my surprise?”
“Well,” she paused as she set down a hot pan, “Monday, you start school again. I
know you haven’t been to school in like two weeks with the move and everything, but I
thought it might help you get over it some.”
Didn’t the lady understand, Liz thought, I’m not ever going to get over the death
of my family! That night she only picked at her food as she thought over her return to
school.
Later that night she lay in bed, not able to fall asleep. She had started her senior
year at CHS with everything going for her. She was class president, she was the top of her
class, she was getting all A’s and to top it all off, she had gotten into the collage she
wanted. Although Michigan State was two states away it was the closest school that had a
good veterinary program.
Liz quickly rolled over. Her family had left everything to her after their death. She
now owned an apartment complex (to which someone else was in charge, she just owned
it), a condo in Florida and a large hotel (also someone else was in charge, she still owned
it.) in her old town. Liz didn’t want any of them, she had too many memories in those
places with her family, although she didn’t want to sell them. Now that Liz tought about
it, she had a lot of money.
The clock said it was 12:30, but she felt like she had been laying in bed for hours,
not 30 minutes. Liz closed her eyes and started counting sheep, hoping that she would fall
asleep this time.

That morning Kik and Liz went shopping for new things for school. They got
home with only a few things. Liz needed new pencils, notebooks and shoes.
After some talking her aunt around they went shopping again, for a car. Liz had
the money to buy it but she needed someone over eighteen to sign for it. She ended up
getting a brand new silver Eclipse and she drove it home right off the car lot. That night
Kik took her out for dinner to celebrate the start of school the next day. Liz cried herself
to sleep that night as she lay in bed.

Her alarm blared the next morning at 6:00. Liz laid in bed, listening to her favorite
song by Papa Roach. She quickly got ready for the school day. Grabbing breakfast as she
ran out the door to her new car, she left for school.
Liz pulled into the partaking lot and headed up to the school, scared about the
huge school. Her old school was a private school and only had 200 kids, this one had three
stories to it. She followed the sea of kids into the school and found the front office.
“Be with ya in a sec Sweety,” said a lady on a phone. Liz nodded and sat in a
chair, waiting till the lady was off the phone.
“How can I help you?” she asked after she hung up the phone and scribbled
something on some paper.
Liz put on a fake smile and said softly, “I’m new here, Elizabeth Zook.”
The lady smiled at her, “All right, here ya go,” Liz was handed a schedule, “Your
homeroom is Mr. Collins,” She stopped a tall boy that was leaving the office, “ Allen, will
you show Elizabeth here to Mr. Collins class please, she’s new.”
He nodded, “Follow me.”
He quickly walked out of the room with Liz in toe, “Let me see your schedule,”
Liz handed it to him after he asked, “Jon has second hour with you, Alley has third with
you, I’m in your seventh and Lex is in your fifth. If you need help finding any of your
classes ask for any of us,” Allen smiled at her.
“Thanks and I am most likely to take you up on that offer.”
“Here.”
Liz smiled at him as he left her standing in a doorway. She took a deep breath and
walked into the class. She sat in the back corner, away from the groups of friends. One
group of guys kept looking at her and staring. Finally one walked over to her.
He looked to be just over six feet with short black hair that stuck out in every
direction. He had slightly pointed ears and bright blue eyes that were staring at her. His
black and yellow hoodie covered broad shoulders and a slender waist. Liz could tell that
he knew he was hot, it was in the way he walked and the cocky expression on his face, but
she defiantly didn’t disagree with him.
“What’s with the blue hair?” He snorted.
“What’s it to you?” Liz glared at him.
“My buddies and I have a bet about it.”
“Well, I guess you wont find out, cause I’m not telling you,” she looked away and
at her schedule, “Maybe if you had been nicer ...” she let the sentence trail off.
“I just want know what’s with the damn blue hair!” He retorted.
“Cole Wolfie! I don’t think that I heard you right. Did you just swear?” demanded
Mr. Collins.
“No sir,” Coleflashed a charming smile at the teacher and left Liz sitting in the
chair.
She looked down into her black purse and pulled out a pencil and a folded up
blank piece of paper. She unfolded it and clenched her jaw as she got a glance at her wrist.
There was a scare there, about two inches long and it looked fresh. Liz winced when she
saw it, remembering where it came from.
It was maybe three days after the fire and everything finally sunk in. She cried for
the next two days. Finally she couldn’t take it anymore and locked herself in her aunt’s
bathroom. Liz took apart one of the razors that was in there and slit her wrists. She
watched the blood drip from her wrists to the floor as she felt the pain of losing her family
drip away with it. Liz didn’t know how long she watched the blood drip or she didn’t
realize that she was suddenly very tired. She sat down, thinking it would go away. Liz
looked at the floor, at her own blood as it seeped out of the room, under the door. The
next thing she knew she was in a bed, in the hospital. Her aunt was sitting next to her, half
asleep and there were bandages on her wrists.
Someone nudged her and she turned to look as Cole said, “Hey, are you ok? I’m
sorry if I was mean about your hair, I just wanted to know.”
Liz smiled, “No, it’s not about the hair ... just,” she paused, looking for the right
word, “remembering.”
He gave her a funny look, scrunching up his nose and looking confused. Cole took
a breath to say something but then the bell rang for class to start. He shrugged it off and
turned toward the front of the room. Liz was a little confused. How had he ended up next
to her, his friends were across the room.
Mr. Collins class was over before she knew it. Liz had written down all the things
she would need for the class and had been assigned a book. Once he had told the class that
there was nothing else to do that day, she realized that there was still another five minutes
till the bell rang to let class out.
“Hey, let me see you schedule!” Cole turned to her cheerfully and Liz handed it to
him. “Wow, we have six of the seven classes together. Fifth hour is different but we still
have the same lunch.”
Liz thought she might not like so many classes with him. He was the type that was
a jock. She could tell from his friend that he most likely played hockey because they were
all wearing jackets that advertised the team.
She smiled at him, “So you wanna walk me to my next class, cause I’m so lost!”
Cole smiled at her, showing off his smile at every chance he got, “Of couse!” He
paused for a second, thinking, “Did you ever tell me your name?”
“Nope, and I’m Liz.”
