“I hate you. You know that, right?” Jayden grumbled, shooting a killing glance over at his roommate. Zach just grinned and kept walking, ignoring Jayden’s mumbled curses. Jayden always complained if he had to get up before noon, so tromping across campus at three am wasn’t his idea of a great time.
“Aw! Come on! This is fun! You’re getting out of the room, experiencing nature and all that crap,” Zach said with a smirk, swinging his flashlight around to the left when he heard a soft snapping sound.
“What’s the matter? Afraid of the demon bunnies from Hell?” Jayden teased, barely stifling a yawn. Zach turned to face him, shining the light in Jayden’s eyes for a second.
“Shut up. You’re just mad that I made you leave your cave,” he shot back, glancing around again. “It’s about time, too. You’ve been locked up in there pretty much all month. Since David…”
“That was a month ago. So just drop it, okay?” Jayden snapped, his hands shaking as he tried to calm down. Of all the times to bring that up…
“Alright. Fine. Sorry,” Zach muttered, turning away and starting to walk again. He should’ve known better than to bring that up again…
“Where the hell are we going, anyway?” Jayden asked after a few moments, looking around. They were mostly off campus now. The only thing he could think of that was nearby was…
“Davison Woods. You mean I didn’t tell you? How forgetful of me,” Zach said with an innocent smile. Jayden groaned and muttered a few choice curse words under his breath.
“Why are we going there? There’s nothing there. You better not have dragged me out of bed this early to be chasing stories again…”
“Would I do that to you?” Zach asked, giving Jayden his best ‘puppy dog’ eyes.
“Damn it. I really hate you,” Jayden said, lightly smacking Zach on the head. “You know those were just stories, right? There’s no such thing as a demon.”
“You don’t know that. Besides, you need to get out more. You’re turning into a fucking hermit,” Zach joked. He ignored Jayden’s muttering and kept walking. He knew they weren’t going to find anything, but it was worth it if it got Jayden out for even a few hours…
“Zach…you really don’t have to do this. I’ll be fine. I just need some time,” he said after a few moments of silence. He sighed as a light fog rolled in, lending the woods an almost dream-like quality. He just wanted to go back to his room and go back to bed.
“Too late. We’re here!” Zach announced, stepping into a small clearing and turning to face his roommate. “This is the best place to summon demons. If you know how, of course,” he added with a wink.
“You don’t know what you’re doing. Let’s just go back, okay? This is nuts,” Jayden said quietly, looking around the clearing. Something about this place gave him the creeps.
“You’re not going to chicken out on me now, are you?” Zach asked. He didn’t give Jayden a chance to respond. Instead, he grabbed his roommate’s arm and dragged him into the middle of the clearing. “Stand there. Let me at least give this a shot,” he pleaded.
Jayden sighed and let his arms fall to his sides. Zach had won this one. Like there was ever any doubt.
“Fine. Just hurry up and do whatever the hell it is you’re going to do. I want to go back to bed,” he grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest and looking over at Zach impatiently. Zach shot him a grin before hurrying to the edge of the clearing. He cleared his throat and raised his arms above his head dramatically, preparing himself to summon a demon.
Jayden rolled his eyes and waited while Zach rambled on, acting like he had a clue what he was doing. Zach knew as much about stuff like this as Jayden did. That is…absolutely nothing.
“Zach? Are we done yet? This is stupid. I want to go back to the room now,” he said wearily, running his hands through his shaggy brown-blonde hair. Zach ignored him and kept up the ‘ritual’. With a sigh, Jayden tilted his head back and closed his eyes, wishing he were anywhere but here now…
Far back from the clearing, hidden from human eyes, the demon leaned against a tree and watched the two teenagers, fighting not to laugh. Did they have any idea how often people tried to summon him? They all failed. He didn’t do the bidding of mortals…
Still…he’d never been this drawn to a human before. The young man in the center of the clearing radiated an air of pain and loneliness. Two feelings the demon fed off of. He’d never felt them so strongly from one so young, though.
Intrigued, he moved a little closer.
“Zach…please. Just stop. I want to go back,” Jayden pleaded quietly, rubbing his arms as the chilly fog crept up around them. He didn’t want to do this. It was still too soon. He shouldn’t have left his room. Nothing was worth this. Not now…
Zach finally looked up at Jayden. He immediately let his arms drop and hurried over to his roommate. The boy’s face had gone pale, making his sapphire eyes unusually bright. The pain in those depths was what got to him, though.
“Jayden…I’m sorry. You’re right. Let’s go back,” he said softly, feeling like a first class idiot. Jayden was supposed to be his friend. He should’ve known it was too soon for him to be out. He grabbed the flashlight off the ground and turned to Jayden.
“Come on. Let’s go,” he said, turning and slowly leading the way back into the woods. Jayden just nodded wordlessly and followed behind Zach, his movements stiff and wooden. He just wanted to go home and sleep, try to forget all of this.
He was so lost in his thoughts he didn’t even realize when Zach disappeared ahead of him into the fog. He kept seeing David, no matter how hard he tried to forget about him. Everyone said a month was enough time, but it wasn’t. It really wasn’t. David had been everything to him…
He was so deep in his own mind, he never noticed the shape that came up behind him. He felt a soft brush against his mind, heard a voice whispering, telling him to sleep. As he dropped down into darkness, there was only one thought in his head.
Looks like Zach actually did it…

Damean knelt on the ground and gently picked up the boy. It hadn’t taken much to get him to succumb to sleep. The boy’s physical as well as spiritual weariness made it easy.
“Sleep, young one. Soon there will be no more pain for you,” he whispered softly to the sleeping boy. Even asleep the boy seemed to sense that something wasn’t quite right. His eyes fluttered as if he were trying to come awake. Damean simply tightened the command a bit and forced the boy’s mind back to sleep.
“Not yet. Sleep. You’ll need it,” he said, a small smile crossing his face. Shaking his long black hair out of his face, he sifted the space around them. Seconds later they were gone.
