Chapter One: A Package Is Delivered

Once upon at time in a faraway land there lived a widow, her two daughters and her stepdaughter. The cottage in which they lived was small and was located just by the edge of the woods.

The widow resented the fact that her stepdaughter was so very beautiful while her own flesh and blood daughters were ugly. The stepdaughter was given all the menial chores to do. The widow and her own daughters did no work and enjoyed being waited on hand and foot.

The day had come when the beautiful stepdaughter reached her eighteenth birthday. She was on her hands and knees scrubbing the floor while her stepmother and stepsisters sat and gossiped about the lords and ladies of the kingdom. Suddenly there was a knock at the door.

\"Well, don\'t dawdle!\" said the widow to her stepdaughter. \"Go see who that is!\"

The beautiful stepdaughter put down the scrub brush, got up and walked over to the door. She opened it. There stood a tall, muscular, handsome young man. His eyes were green and his golden brown hair was long and hung down to his shoulders. He held a package in his arms.

\"Good evening, lass,\" he said as he smiled at her. His deep manly voice was most pleasing to her ears. \"I am the wood-carver. This package is for the widow who lives here.\"

The widow heard those words and rushed over to the door. She pushed aside her stepdaughter and eagerly took the package from the wood-carver.

\"It\'s about time!\" she snapped. \"I paid extra money to have this rushed!\"

\"My lady, I assure you that I placed top priority on your order without sacrificing the quality of my craftsmanship.\" The wood-carver bowed, turned and walked away.

The beautiful stepdaughter gazed at the wood-carver as he left. She had never been allowed to meet anyone outside of their home, so it was a treat for her to see a stranger come calling, especially one so handsome.

The widow clasped the package to her body and said to her stepdaughter, \"What are you doing, you lazy good-for-nothing? Get back to scrubbing that floor!\"

The beautiful stepdaughter averted her eyes and said, \"Yes, ma\'am.\" She went back to work.

The widow motioned for her two daughters to follow her upstairs. The three of them climbed the stairs leaving the beautiful stepdaughter downstairs still scrubbing the floor.
