Once upon a time
Ch. 1 : The beginning.
“Oh, please papa, read me another!” A chestnut brown haired 5 year-old girl squeaked to her father. “Just, one more.”
“Michaela it is your bed time, I am afraid your mother will have my hide if you aren't in bed very soon.” Her father smiled and kissed her forehead. “Tomorrow I will read you Cinderella. How is that?”
The twin set of emerald green eyes shown in laugher, “Okay Papa... tomorrow night.”
But what poor little Michaela didn't know was, there would be no story the night of tomorrow, nor the next day, or the day after that. Her father was killed in a stage coach robbery as he was delivering mail to the next town. 13 years following her father's death. Her mother passed away. Leaving the 18 year old to fend for herself. Her mother was bitter after her father's passing. But Michaela was just as sweet as ever. She went to school everyday did her chores and even had time to volunteer at the local church helping to keep the youngest of children occupied during services.
“Michaela, thank God you are here.” A red headed woman came out of the towns' clinic. “My nephew Duane has come to town, but I am busy here at the clinic, can you show him around town?”
Michaela stood straight, “Sure thing Dr. Knepp, Just send him my way.” A white smile brightened her face.
“Thank you dear, you don't know how much I appreciate this.” The female doctor smiled and waved for a young man to come over. “Michaela this is Duane Knepp, he is my nephew.”
Michaela didn't know what to think, she was expecting a young child not this handsome man that looked to be at least in his early twenties. She looked up at him and smiled, “Hi my name is Michaela Shinn.”
“How do you do ma'am. This is my first time here in Colorado Springs.” Duane smiled in return. He had the look of a cowboy but the manners of a gentleman.
“Well I hope you enjoy the town as much as I do.” She looked at Dr. Knepp, “I'll have him back before dark, is that okay?”
“Yes, and thank you Michaela.” The woman smiled and walked back into the clinic.
“Well, where to start?” Michaela sighed and looked at the rather small dusty town.
“How about the meadow? Or do you know any place for sale?” Duane smiled, “I'm fixin' on movin' out this way.”
Michaela smiled, “Well in that case I know of a home stead that has been vacent for years, follow me.” Soon she was headed out of the main town area and up a dirt road, with Duane hot on her trail. The road had it's twists and bends and soon the two were standing in front of an old, run-down looking homestead. “It may need a little work but, rent is only a dollar a month.”
Duane looked at Michaela, “You own this?”
“Actually, yes, my father built it when he and my mother got engaged, he died when I was five and my mother and I just moved into her boarding house, we couldn't bare living here any longer.” Michaela nodded. “I hate to see it go to waste, my father worked so hard on it.”
“Okay then, I'll take it,” Duane smiled at her then walked into the creaky house. It was still furnished with two cushioned chairs by the hearth, all kitchen appliances, and two bed rooms one master with a large bed, and a little girls bed room the walls still pink but chipped. Duane looked at Michaela's expression change from excitement to hurt and memories. “If it's too much I won't be offended if you start back to town with out me.”
“No, I'm fine.” Was her reply.
