Small-Town Murders
Krys\'Tia James sat at her desk looking over case files. She had been at the station since 7 am, and it was now a quarter to 1 am.
\"Shit!\" She cursed softly looking at the time.
She stood and began to gather her things to head home. After finishing, and on her way out to her car she said good-night to the officer working the front desk on the grave-yard shift.
Once in the parking lot, she found her car with out any troubles, it was one of the only ones left in the lot. She unlocked it and climbed in starting. She turned the heater on, and the radio down. She shivered lightly. It got rather cold at 1 in the morning in mid-October. While she waited for the car to warm up she thought over the case she had just finished up with, rather helped with. It was a rape/drug case. That wasnt her area, she was a homicide detective. But she had been asked to help out with this case, cause she didn’t have any cases that she was working on at this moment. In a week in a half she had been able to solve the case and put the scum-bag behbarsbars. But now that case was over, and again she had nothing to work on. And seeing as how she lived in Millington, Tennessee, they didn’t have very many cases of any kind. So until one did happen along she looked over old cases from before she was on with Police Force. They were all cases that had been solved, closed, or Un-solved.
She pulled herself from her thought and put the car in reverse and sloweganegan pulling out, watching in the rear-view mirror as she did. She quickly slammed on the brakes, and brought the car to an abrupt stop.
\"What the hell?\" she said aloud to herself
She looked back over her shoulder out the back window. She coulda swore that just a moment ago someone had been standing directly behind her car, and now there was no one there at all. She slowly shook her head as she thought to herself. \'C\'mon Krys, get it together. Dont let the strest tot to ya now!\'. She again began to slowly pull out of the spot and then out of the lot and headed home. But she couldn’t seem to pull her thoughts from the incident that had just taken place just moments before. There was just something about it that didn’t sit right with her, she just cn’t n’t figure it out.

\"CHAD!\" William Howard called to his son.
\"What?\" Chad called back from the garage.
\"Dont what me boy! C\'mere!\" Mr. Howard said in a stern tone.
Chad rolled his eyes, but headed into the house through the kitchen door from the garage.
\"Yes sir?\" he asked flatly.
\"Your attitude really needs to change. Cliff is on the phone. It\'s a damn good thing your Caroline isn\'t still around... she would be having a fit about him calling at 1:30 in the morning!\" He said.
Chad hated it when his father brought up his mother, who he now referred to as Caroline. He didn’t know all the \'gory\' details to her leaving, and behind the divorce, but he didn’t much care either. When she left, she not only left his dad, but him too, and for that... he had some anger towards her. He sighed.
\"That’s why I should get my own phone line! Then he wouldn\'t be calling on YOUR phone!\" Chad exclaimed as he picked up the phone. \"What\'s up Cliff?\"
Chad took the cordless phone with him as he headed back out to the garage.
\"Get the lecture again?\" Cliff asked
\"You know it!\" Chad answered
\"Never fails... What are you doing?\" Cliff asked.
\"Working on my car. What about you?\" he asked.
He bent over his car\'s opend, bd, balancing the phone between his shoulder and ear. He began fiddling with something, while listening to Cliff.
\"Trying to get Laci to sneak out with me. But she wants to bring Jamie.\" Cliff answered.
\"Jamie... isn\'t that Laci\'s best friend?\" Chad asked, standing up right again.
\"Yeah. Laci insists on inviting Jamie to do EVRYTHING with us, and Jamie is just is just as thrilled about it as I am.\" Cliff said.
Chad chuckled on his end. \"Sounds like Jamie needs a man of her own.\" he said.
\"That’s what I think. Anyway, you wanna sneak out with us?\" he asked.
Chad peaked around the corner, and seen his dad sitting in the reclining chair reading the news paper.
\"My old man is still up.\" Chad answered.
\"So. Tell him your going to bed, go out your window, and meet us in the alley in ten minutes.\" Cliff said.
He didn’t give Chad the chance to protest, like he knew he was gonna do, and just hung up on him. Chad sighed and hung up as well. He peaked back around the corner at his father again. Only this time he had found his reclining chair empty, the lamp off and the news paper on the floor next to it. He\'d gone to bed. Chad smiled. He turned the garage light off, and headed into the house through the kitchen, closing the door to the garage as he came in. He headed up to his bedroom. He passed his fathers room as he went.
\"Good Night Dad!\" he called out.
\"Good Night Son!\" Will called back.
Chad entered his room, and locked the door behind him. He grabbed his Millington Central High hooded sweat-shirt, then proceeded out of his bedroom window. He climbed down the lattice fencing his mother had put up when they had moved into the house. Which was before he was even born. He jumped down the last couple of feet, and casually walked to the back alley where he was to meet Cliff, Laci, and Jamie, Laci\'s friend. He pulled the sweat-shirt on as he entered the alley. He seen Cliff\'s car sitting at the at the end of the alley way. He thought about jogging down to the car, but changed his mind, and continued to casually walk to the car. As he reached the car, and pulled the door open, he thought he saw someone out of the corner of his eye. But when he looked in the direction, no one was there. He shrugged it off and climbed into the car closing the door behind him,ore ore the car sped off down the street.

He stood back watching as a teen boy climbed into the back seat of a car with three other teens in the car. The boy had seen him, but he moved outta sight when he looked to get a better look at him. He pulled a cigarette from his pack, and lit it. He flipped up his oat collar, and began walking in the same direction the car had just gone in, staying in the shadows for the most part. He\'d just come in from Kentucky. He\'d had some fun there, but the police were getting too smart for their own good. So he packed up and moved on. If he was lucky this little hick town knew nothing of him. He was pretty sure they didn’t. The town didn’t look like a high crime town. In fact he hadn’t even seen in hookers in the \'downtown\' area as he walked through. From what he saw, this town went to bed when the sun went down. He hadn’t even found an open pub at mid-night when he wandered in. But he was able to quickly locate the police station.
When he did come across it, it was probably about a quarter to one in the morning. He wondered just how many officers this little town had, and how many were out patrolling at this time. He remembered as he leaned against a Jeep Cherokee, a young, attractive, woman came out of the police station. She had shoulder length auburn hair, athletically trim, about 5\'3, 130 lbs, and she had a badge on a belt clip. \'Detective.\' he thought. As she came closer he stepped into the shadows, so as not to be seen. He watched as she dug into a small duffle bag on her shoulder for her keys. Once she had found them she had climbed into the vehicle he had just been leaning against. Once she started it he stepped back out behind it when she began backing out. She stopped suddenly and glance back over her shoulder, but he had already moved from sight by this point. He smiled as he remembered the incident, as well as the one with the teen boy who had snuck out. His thoughts were interrupted by flashing lights.
\"Excuse me sir, where ya headed?\" An officer asked.
He threw his cigarette butt down, \"Well... I am staying down at the camp grounds... but I walked up to the pub... and now I cant seem to find my way back to the grounds.\" he lied.
The officer nodded. \"Oh. Well you\'re quite a ways off course. You\'re gonna wanna head back through the downtown area back out by the high way towards the outskirts of town.\" The officer said.
\"Okay.\" he merely replied.
\"I can give you a lift if you\'d like.\" The officer offered.
He thought a moment, but decided against it. The officer has already seen to much of him, and he didn’t want him to become familiar with him.
\"That alright officer Logan. I enjoy walking.\" He said, reading the name from the cops tag on his shirt.
\"Alright. Be safe Mr....\" Officer Logan paused when he realized he didn’t know the strangers name.
\"John Smith.\" He filled in.
\"Mr. Smith. How long you in town for?\" Officer Logan asked.
\"Just the night, I\'m off to Bartlett tomorrow.\" he answered.
\"Oh... well enjoy your stay here in Millington.\" Officer Logan said politely.
\"Sure Will!\" he said.
He watch as the officer got back into his cruiser and drove away. \'Fool! Cant even tell when someone is lying straight to his face.\' He thought. He had many aliases, and John Smith happened to be only ONE of them. He watched the officer drive outta site, and decided he had better head back to the camp grounds. He hadn\'t needed directions on how to get there, he\'d parked his car there, and walked into Millington. He would finish up his little tour tomorrow. Maybe even go by the local high school. He smiled widely. \"Let the games begin!\" he said sinisterly to himself, ligg ang another cigarette.
\"Shit!\" She cursed softly looking at the time.
She stood and began to gather her things to head home. After finishing, and on her way out to her car she said good-night to the officer working the front desk on the grave-yard shift.
