I felt more at ease in her arms than anywhere else, and despite the fact that she was now downstairs I still felt her presence. It was disturbing really… but in a nice way.
I turned over and felt someone pass the door, pause then continue. I gave the person thirty seconds then I heard the door close. Arching my back I rolled off the bed and landed on my feet, then looked around the room. After a bit of rummaging I found a large button down shirt and a pair of short, deciding that Reena wouldn’t mind, I switched the clothes I’d been wearing for them before going downstairs.
“Is that my shirt?” was the first question to pop out of Reena’s mouth. I nodded and looked to the stove seeing the remains of a breakfast still in the frying pan.
“We saved that for you for when you got up.” Anya said happily
“Though how you knew Terry left is beyond me.” Reena said shaking her head.
“I heard the door close.” I replied simply as I went to the cupboards and began looking for a plate for the French toast. Kerri went to the fridge and grabbed the container of milk and another glass and went back to sit.
“Want milk?” she asked grinning as she refilled her glass and poised the container over the empty glass.
“Yeah sure…” I sat myself between Kerri and Anya and began to eat.
“So tell us about yourself… Where’re you from? What did you do? What are your powers?” Jake said in a light tone and business behind his eyes. “Is Kitsune your real name?” I sighed
“My full name is Kitsune Riona Lawrence. My powers… lets leave that out for now,” I twitched involuntarily, “I stayed out of trouble for the most part, and I have no idea where I was born.”
“So we can call you Kit?” Anya asked innocently.
“I… guess…”
“How did you two meet?” Jake asked me. I felt a dare come in the tone of his voice.
“How did Reena tell you we met?” I asked tilting my head slightly before putting some more toast into my mouth and chewing slowly. He seemed to be at a loss for words, and gave him a crooked smile before looking to Reena who was getting up to wash her plate.
“So you don’t deny working with the organization?” he asked slowly, testing me. I looked down at my plate and frowned.
“I never worked with the organization… I worked for them…” I said, ‘I never had any say in the matter…’
“So there’s a difference?” A voice came from the stairs and we all looked towards it. Memories started to seep back into my core and all emotion drained from my being
“There is a difference from being forced to do something and wanting to…” I replied looking at Terry square in the eyes. “Between choosing to watch your friends die and being forced to… You don’t know half the things that happened in that organization and you better hope you don’t find out.” I got up leaving the plate where it was and jumped to the park.
I sat on the swing for an insurmountable time, unsure of what to do for the first time in three years. Usually I’d just find somewhere else to go jump to an unknown or known continent, but now… I didn’t know where to go. ‘Reena…’
~Reena’s perspective~
“You know you didn’t give me so much hell when I told you where I came from.”
“You didn’t kill people Reena.” I took a step back in shock. My mouth now open. “I saw a news report yesterday. And the picture reminded me very much of the organization Souseiki that murdered my parents.” she continued, “Then I realized that the girl also closely resembled the girl who gave Anya the cat.” as if on cue, the cat appeared on top of one of the cupboards, “The same girl who was in your room Reena… which actually make me question your character once more.”
“Terry that’s not fair! Kit didn’t want to do those things!” Kerri defended while I was still speechless “She said so herself.”
“But that’s just it. All she has to do is say it. She’s a fantastic actor don’t you think?”
“Stop with the accusations Terry!” I cried finally
“Why? She’s gone now! Probably to call for reinforcements now that we’re onto her.” I strode over to her and grabbed her by her shirt and lifted her off the ground effortlessly causing her to gasp in shock.
“She and I lived through hell in that place, her more than me.” I seethed so only she could hear “Your accusations are invalid, but if you keep spouting that nonsense you’ll do more harm than good.” she was shaking at the sheer venom in my voice.
“Aren’t you worried about this place?”
“She would do anything that would hurt us Terry.” I said back in my normal voice, setting her down “Besides, it was thanks to her I got out of there, alive.” I replied glancing to Anya who was now trying to keep the cat out of Kit’s food.
“But where did she go?” Anya asked after a while. “I want to take her to the shopping area so we can get some ice-cream!” I laughed sourly
“I’ll see if I can find her k?” Anya nodded and picked up the cat. We really needed to come up with a name for it… ‘hmmm…’ “Anya, can I see her?” I asked moving to her side.
“Sure.” she handed me the cat and I held it to eye level, noting the pale grey eyes that almost matched Kit’s
‘Do you know where she is?’ I wondered. She tilted her head and then made a slight struggle to get out of my hands. As soon as I loosened my hold she bounded out of my hands and ran for the door, paused and looked at me curiously.
“I’m going out for a bit alright?” I called running to the cat and opening the door, not even waiting for an answer.
It didn’t take long for us to reach the park and I saw her sitting on one of the swings, her arms wrapped around the chains looking lost by her standards. The cat pounced on her lap startling her out of her reverie.
“What are you doing here Terra?” she whispered, her right arm becoming dis-entangled from the chains to pet Terra lightly.
“So you did name her.” I stated walking towards her. She looked up and frowned
“I shouldn’t stay. It’s not safe for me to.” I arched an eyebrow
“Anya’ll be crushed if you don’t at least say good-bye.” I smirked as she looked away. “And Terra seems to be really attached to you. I nodded to the highly content cat in her lap.
“I guess…” her thoughts were distant… I didn’t like that. It meant she was hiding something. I figured she’d tell me if it was something serious.
“By the way, I had been wondering… why did you separate us that day?” I asked sitting on the gravel at her feet.
“In my state… I would not have been able to make a light distortion.” she replied after a long pause “They would have been able to send troops after us for hours if we had stayed together… As it was they sent troops, but when they lost contact after they came through they realized something was wrong…” I looked at her intently with my eyebrow creased as her face fell. Then the realization hit.
“They… oh my God, Kit!” my mind flashed back to when we first starting speaking on good terms
“I don’t want to kill anymore… it hurts to see their eyes… the death and knowing that they’re going to die… and they accept it by my hands. It’s not fair!”
“You killed them...”
“If they hadn’t come through nothing would have happened to them.” She said clenching her teeth, her hand started trembling, “If they had just left us alone… they wouldn’t have-” she choked and Terra moved off her lap as Kit fell to her knees. I pulled her to me, just holding her as she cried the guilt out.
“I never want to have to kill again…”
