Bullet

I know it may seem strange now but this is the climatic chapter...hope you like, it's short so expect the next update in the a.m. sometime prolly around 10 or 11 central time

Daniel pulled on his shirt as James watched him intently from the bed. Anita was coming, they had spent a rather quiet day together, aside from fixing the door, trying to forget about the woman but had failed. Daniel sighed and walked over to James, placing a light hand against his face as he closed his eyes and leaned into the touch.

“I’ll try to straighten everything out with her tonight.”

James sighed and kissed his hand as it fell away.

“Just come home, if you stay all night with her…”

Daniel smiled weakly at him as the doorbell rang.

“I’ll come home. Greg is in the living room if you need anything.”

Daniel quietly left the room, closing the door behind him. He grabbed his coat on the way out as he waved to Greg. The man showed little concern. Daniel paused at the door and stared at the small table next to him. He pulled out the drawer and shoved his pistol into the back of his jeans, covering it with his shirt.

James sat alone in his room for what seemed like a long time, he could hear the television in the living room and Greg laughed from time to time. It was keeping him awake. He rolled over and stared at the dark ceiling. A soft knock at the front door pulled his attention. No one was expected, especially not at this late hour. He listened as Greg went to answer it, he shouted and a loud gunshot followed, and then only silence. James reacted before he thought his idea through, as he quietly ran for the bedroom door and locked it. He backed away as he heard men enter, a second gunshot and a laugh. He quickly circled around, trying to find a hiding place or an escape, he wasn’t so lucky. He jumped as the door was busted open for the second time.

“I’m glad you agreed to join me, I had feared you would force me to expose you.”

Daniel sat and accepted the menu the waiter offered him.

“There’s nothing to expose really, the boy is of legal age I’m not doing anything wrong.”

She smiled, glad that he was playing along. He wondered why after all this time she was so desperate for his attention. She had to have another motive for forcing him to follow her.

“Nothing illegal anyway, but when it comes to morals I think you’re crossing some lines. That’s why I had to be so harsh in getting you here; you need some quality time with a woman. Perhaps you’ve forgotten what it feels like.”

She rubbed her foot along his leg under the table he pulled away.

“I haven’t forgotten anything. I know this isn’t why you want me here. You’re not that crazy Anita at least you didn’t used to be. Why are you doing this?”

She sighed and sipped her wine.

“You really are dumb aren’t you Danny. Antonio had told that to Ricard after you two spoke but I didn’t think you were.”

Daniel’s stomach sank low, she was with Antonio, and there was no other way for her to know that they spoke.

“What are you doing? Who’s been sent to collect James?”

She cocked her head at him.

“Do I have to spell it out for you? I’m the decoy, James is the target. Antonio and Julio are in confinement. Ricard has never been one to let another man do a job for him.”

Daniel stood and bolted for the door to the restaurant, Anita’s laugh carried to him as he scrambled for his phone. It rang before he could dial.

“Chief! James is in danger, I think Ricard is headed for my place and Greg is there alone!”

“Daniel there has been reports of gunfire in your building, you need to get there now, I’m sending cars so wait for back up!”

“Send a car immediately for Sunset Restaurant, they need to pick up an Anita Jones, she’s part of this too.”

Daniel hung up his phone; he would not wait a second.

James panted as he licked away the blood from his lip. Ricard was never one for light blows; if he just stayed still perhaps he could get away with few bruises. He was bound to a chair in the kitchen wearing only a pair of shorts. Greg was lying dead on the living room floor. He could hear the squeal of tires five stories down as Ricard smiled, the two other men with him positioned themselves near the door.

“Alright boys, show time.”

Daniel took the stairs two steps at a time, blowing down his hall and busting through his door like it was made of paper. His gun was drawn and ready when he faced down two large men, also armed with pistols. Ricard clapped in the kitchen next to James, who sat bleeding in one of their kitchen chairs. Greg was lying motionless and bloody on the floor near the door.

“I don’t have all the time in the world Danny so I’ll make this quick. If you put your weapon down now and let us leave I’ll let you live. But if you make a fuss I’ll put you down and brand your new found pet just as Antonio wishes.”

Daniel panted hard, trying to catch his breath; he had little chance to win. The two gunmen were too far apart for him to be able to fire at both without getting shot. He slowly moved into the apartment, forcing the two men back.

“We only have five minutes to discuss this Ricard, that doesn’t seem like enough time for me. Not to mention it’s not a very good deal.”

Ricard cocked his head at him and smiled.

“What do you mean Danny?”

Ricard moved behind James and began to slowly untie him.

“Well, it seems to me no matter what I do James gets the bad end of the deal.”

Ricard laughed in his throat as he freed James and pulled him to his feet.

“James isn’t yours to be concerned about. He belongs to another man, he will always belong to another man and the fact that you’ve touched him has lowered his value considerably. I think letting you live is quiet generous, being the fact that Antonio wants you as dead as you can be.”

They were moving, ever so slowly around him, the gunmen always between Daniel and what he wanted as they circled towards the exit. Daniel could hear sirens outside, Ricard’s features grew tense.

“It seems my friends are here. Why don’t you let the boy go and run so that this doesn’t become a hostage situation.”

One of the gunmen looked down and ever so slightly lowered his weapon as he bumped into the coffee table. This was his one and only chance. Daniel fired; striking the still attending gunman in the head as he dropped the other raised his weapon and fired just as Daniel did the same. James cried out as searing pain flashed through his chest, the second gunman dropped as Ricard wrapped his arms around James as he struggled to pull him out the door. Daniel dropped to his knees, blood falling to the carpet as he watched James struggling in the man’s arms. His chest felt heavy as his hearing faded, James was screaming for him but he couldn’t hear it. He fell to the carpet as the last image of the boy faded from his vision.

James kicked and screamed with all the energy he could muster. Ricard was growing frustrated with him as he tried to throw the boy before him and into the stairwell. Police came rushing up as Ricard put his hands up with a smile.
