Chapter 8

Midas and Aivon left early in the morning, in order to aviod anyone seeing them. Aivon seemed saddened that he couldn't say goodbye to his son, but he was certain that Sophia would tell him about it and explain why he had to leave on such short notice. Aivon tried not to think about it as they headed west, off in a new direction that Aivon had no been to.

"So, Midas, what's west of here?"

"A forest, and a small home after that. I figured we could head there first since if we tried to go around the forest, it would take longer to get to a town or inn and rest up, as well as resupply. Besides, I know the people there, and I'm sure they can help us."

Aivon was slightly impressed by how calm he sounded, and how prepared Midas seemed to be. Then again, Midas always did have a knack for knowing more then most other people, something that Aivon was sure to notice after they had last traveled together. It seemed so long ago, yet the two of them traveling the plains like this couldn't help but remind him-

"We aren't alone." Aivon said suddenly, feeling a demonic presence around them. Aivon tried to find where it was coming from, but his eyes opened in surprise. "No... it can't be..."

"Can't be what?" Midas asked, in a slight whisper, although he too could now feel the familiar power that for six years, he thought had vanished.

"I see you haven't forgot me." A figure emerged from seemingly nothingness, although it was clear by the slowly vanishing circle around him, he had used a spell to bring himself here. Standing over seven feet tall, wearing leather armor and wielding an axe behind his back, Hieas stepped foward. "It's been a long time since I last saw you two. Shame the other humans aren't here with you. Oh well, I assume he's already had his fun with them..."

Midas withdrew his weapons, as Aivon only stared in amazement. "You can't be alive... we saw you destroyed! There was no way you could have survived!"

"Who says I did? In any case, I'm back, and I wish to sample some of my power against you. I'm not the same Hieas you knew before." Midas didn't wait, as he rushed foward intent on striking a fatal blow. "Fool. Aqua Shield." Hieas raised his hands as a shield of water protected him from the attack, but Aivon now noticed there was something... different about his casting.

Midas was not one to give in though. He placed his own hand directly on the shield. "Let's see your shield withstand this. Wind Bomb!" The blast of wind energy struck safely pushing Midas away well focusing all its power on the shield. A large cloud of dust was caused at the sudden wind movement, yet when the dust and dirt cleared, Hieas was still standing with his hand out, the shield undamaged. "No way. No shield could have withstood an upclose attack like that..."

Hieas started to chuckle a bit before lowering his hand, causing the shield to vanish. "I told you, I'm different then before. Those kind of attacks won't hurt me." He placed his hand on the ground. "Aqua Burst!" Immediately pillars of water rose up around him before merging over his head and heading straight for the two of them. Midas and Aivon split apart, but the attack also split, following them both.

"Earth Wall!"

"Air Shield!"

Despite the fact that they knew the spell could not normally be split apart without extreme focus and training, perhaps it was fortunate that it had, for the power was lessened, allowing the two shields to stop the attack. It didn't look good at this point, as Midas was unsure of what to do next. He certainly never expected Hieas' return, nor had he expected him to have become so strong.

"Alright, I've had enough of this. Wind Blade!" Bringing his dagger down, he unleashed his concentrated wind strike. Hieas reached around and gripped his axe, giving it a mighty swing and breaking the magic attack. "Damn it..."

"Hah. You call that an attack?"

Maybe not, but this sure is! Rock Shower!" Aivon punched the ground, causing the earth around him to rise up and sharpen as if each fragment were a razor sharp needle. They floated in midair for a moment, before Aivon used his magic to direct the attack toward Hieas. He raised his axe once more, striking down and forcing the earth up to protect him. Once the attack passed, Hieas destroyed the wall with ihs axe before putting it away.

"Damn it, this is bad. Alright, time to show you what wind magic can really do!" Midas got into stance, while Aivon suddenly had the urge to back away. Both his blades stood ready, when the air around him began to gather and pick up. His clothing looked as though a mighty breeze was erupting around him. He placed his hands down on the ground, facing Hieas. "Ready? You better be! Spiral Wind Cut!" The wind seemed to spread out and kick up dust around him. For awhile nothing happened.

Suddenly, wind erupted from beneath Hieas, ripping against his body. The wind energy left marks all over his armor, as it struck against the demon protection in a spiral strike, as if dancing around him. When the attack was over, Hieas looked a little worse for wear, and for a moment, Midas and Aivon thought they made a breakthrough.

"If your done, allow me to show you a new trick." Hieas looked up to them, a smile on his face. Already the few wounds he had from the last attack were starting to heal, which caused a look of disbelief on Midas' face. He raised his hand as if readying for a strike. "Tidal Surge!" Hieas struck out with his other hand, as if trying to hit the air. Suddenly, a torrent of water came rushing out of his hand, heading straight for Midas. Knowing that his only chance would be a shield, Midas cast it, as the wave of water hit. The force of the impact caused the shield to shatter easily, knocking Midas off his feet and slamming him into the ground.

"Midas!" Aivon looked to the fallen Midas, as the water washed over his body before receeding. Aivon knew just looking at him, that he wouldn't be getting back up anytime soon. "Oh damn..." He looked to Hieas again. Damn, when did he get this tough? I wonder if I can really do this...

"Hehehe... are you scared? I would be, if I was up against such power."

Aivon, however, smirked. "Not impressed. You may have taken him down, but I'm more like you then you think. The blood of demons runs through me too. And let me tell you, I've got some new tricks since last we met too." Aivon wished he was as confident as he portrayed, but one thing he was sure of were his new techniques. He hoped they would work against Hieas' new improved power.

Because he was very afraid of what would happen if they failed.
