Chapter Nine
Kara woke slowly and groggily from her deep sleep. She could hear sounds coming from the television in the living room and her head pounded at each heightened voice. She pushed herself up into a sitting position as she realized she was still wearing her clothes from last night. She groaned, she had drank too much last night, she didn’t even remember getting into Daniel’s car. She looked about herself worriedly; making sure it was her room she was in and not some strange guys. She sighed in relief, knowing it for her own. She held her head as she swung her legs over the side of her bed, her toes touching the carpet lightly. Her door was cracked and she looked up to the head-splitting light as Daniel walked by.
“Danny.”
She listened as he stopped and turned around entering her room upon hearing her voice. He smiled at her as he went to her bedside.
“Easy there, just lie back down I’ll get you some asprin and coffee.”
Kara did as she was told, although she wanted to be in something a bit more comfortable than her skirt and tube top from last night. She glanced at her clock, it was already noon. She groaned as she laid her head back in her pillows, listening as Daniel filled a glass of water for her and hurried back to her side. He handed her the asprin and helped her sit up to take a drink of water and help it down. He set the coffee on a coaster on her nightstand and gave her a washcloth to put over her eyes.
“You alright for now Kara?”
She nodded and placed the washcloth over her eyes with a sigh. He smiled at her and stroked her hair soothingly. She had the feeling that he was getting ready to leave but wanted to make sure she was set before hand, her feelings were right.
“I have to go meet with my partner for a bit. I won’t be gone long.”
She willed herself to think a moment, trying to remember what day it was.
“But it’s Saturday.”
She couldn’t hide the whine on her voice, she was tired and just wanted to sleep off the hangover but she didn’t want him to go, she didn’t want to be alone. His brow furrowed at her tone of voice, it was hurting him to leave.
“I know I won’t be gone more than an hour I promise. I’ll leave the television on so you don’t feel so alone. Just try to get some sleep, and keep the hangover at bay. I’ll be back soon I promise.”
He kissed her forehead as she relaxed into her sheets, she didn’t want him to go but she was just too tired to argue with him further. Her eyelids willed themselves shut as he kissed her forehead and made his way out. She listened as he grabbed his keys from the kitchen and closed the locked the front door. The television had stayed on like he had said it would, and it did make her feel less alone sort of. She half groaned again when she realized she was still in her clothes from last night…but the moment was short lived as her mind began to slow. She concentrated on things like the sounds of the ceiling fan and the television in the living room. From the sounds of it, she figured it was a sitcom, maybe friends. It was her last coherent thought before passing into sleep once more.
Daniel climbed the steps to his partner’s apartment nervously. He couldn’t take it anymore; he had to talk to somebody before he imploded. He could think of no one better to drop this bomb on than Alex. He lifted a shaking finger to the elevator button and pushed up, watching the lights above the door tell him what floors the tin box hit. The doors slid open before him, seemingly the gates of his doom. After so many years of silence, after so many confrontations with himself, he was finally going to break his silence and tell someone how he felt about Kara and why it was so wrong.
He stepped into what felt like his coffin, the air around him seemed thin and his breathing quickened. Alex would understand, he would listen, nothing could make him think wrong of him, he was like his brother. The doors opened on the third floor and Daniel moved silently to the fourth door. He took a deep breath, as if preparing to plunge into a pool and knocked on the door. A tall man looking around twenty five answered the door, he had been expecting him.
“Come on in take a seat. Want some coffee?”
Daniel waved away his pleasantries; it’s not what he was there for. Alex could tell as soon as he walked in that something was deeply worrying him. Alex took a seat on his couch, knowing Daniel would make himself comfortable when he felt like it, and took a long drag from his cigarette. Daniel couldn’t believe it, he had called Alex that morning telling him that he needed to talk and what he was going to tell him would be life changing and here he was in his comfy clothes and smoking cheep cigarettes looking like Daniel was over exaggerating.
“Want to sit?”
Daniel shook his head as he paced like a wild cat, he felt trapped, but he wasn’t going to back down now. He had to say something to somebody before he did something terrible to Kara. Something that he came damn near to doing last night. He couldn’t let it happen again, never again.
“I have to talk to you.”
Alex smirked at him before taking another drag off his cigarette.
“Then talk.”
He was always so smooth, eerily smooth. It had a calming effect, but it put Daniel on edge right now. He wouldn’t be able to take it when his cool composure switched to disgust.
“I’ve told you about my mother and father. How my mom had an affair when she got pregnant with me and my ‘father’ didn’t know about it until after Kara was born. My father left and I lived with Lohan. After a few years my mom and Lohan got back together and I finally got to meet Kara.”
Alex nodded, taking in all the points Daniel was trying to ease out before he dropped the bomb. He knew there was a bomb coming, he could tell by Daniel’s composure. He never got worked up like that unless it was something big. Daniel continued to pace, he was screaming inside, say it, don’t say it. He couldn’t trust himself with this dark secret anymore it had to come out.
“I told you that she had left Lohan when I was fifteen, she took Kara with her.”
Alex nodded again, a small smile touching his soft lips, he was so feminine. His long black hair fell to his waist in shining waves.
“You’ve told me a lot about your childhood with Kara, what are you getting at Daniel?”
Daniel relaxed the moment he realized he was going to let it out, everything he had felt for Kara in the past and now the present was finally going to be out. He clenched his jaw and sat on the edge of the pale couch. He rested his elbows on his knees and fisted his hair as he stared at the floor, barely voicing what had to be said.
“I love Kara.”
Alex blinked at Daniel in confusion, that wasn’t the bomb he was expecting. He smiled and crushed his cigarette butt in the ashtray on the table.
“Well she’s your sister Daniel I would hope you love her.”
Danny looked at him sternly, locking his Alex’s steal gaze with his brown.
“No Alex…I love her…”
Alex’s gaze softened as he realized what Daniel was saying. Daniel looked away quickly, pain filling his features as he refused to meet Alex’s gaze.
“I’ll get you some coffee.”
Daniel watched as Alex walked out of the living room and into his well-kept kitchen, seemingly unaffected by what Daniel had just dropped on him. Daniel stood as Alex walked back in, dumbfounded by his reaction or rather, lack there of.
“What are you doing?”
Alex smiled at him and handed him a coffee cup.
“Getting my guest something to drink. Now sit down.”
He hated it when Alex got the fatherly tone in his voice but it was there, and for once Daniel was glad to hear it. The man was only five years older than him, but he was wise beyond his years. Maybe due to his harsh life.
“Didn’t you hear me?”
Alex sipped his drink as Daniel took a seat next to him, seemingly unaffected by his words still.
“I heard you.”
Daniel turned his gaze to his drink; suddenly he didn’t feel like taking anything in. His stomach as so churned right now he didn’t think it would be a wise decision.
“Are you disgusted?”
Alex stared at him silently until Daniel was forced to lock eyes with him. There was sternness there, and a soft sympathy for his situation.
“Do I look disgusted Daniel? I’m gay, you have incestuous love for your sister, we’re all in the same boat here.”
Daniel couldn’t help but laugh at his friends gesture. Alex was gay, he always had been, and Daniel knew since the day he met him. He was very open about it, and it never bothered Daniel that he was the way he was. He guessed telling Alex that he loved his sister was like Alex coming out to him.
“Besides, from the way you talked about her in your childhood the idea crossed my mind that you might have more feelings for her than you thought. Why is this all coming up now?”
Daniel went grave again, feeling himself go cold as he prepared to confess his recent sins.
“She’s living with me now. Mom died two months ago and she’s had a hard time getting a job to pay for her apartment and go to school. I offered for her to move in and…well, it’s been hard.”
Alex smirked as a devious comment passed his perfect lips.
“Her moving in was hard or your dick?”
Daniel shot him an evil glare but didn’t take it to heart; he knew he was trying to lighten his mood. But it was proving to be a hard task.
“A little of both to be honest. I almost did something terrible last night.”
Alex scooted closer to him, like a schoolgirl eager for the latest piece of gossip.
“Do tell Daniel.”
Daniel wanted to hit him for his immature behavior; he wasn’t going to act so childish when he told him what he almost did.
“We went to a club last night, she was feeling down and I wanted to make her feel better and let her have a fun time. She got drunk and passed out on the way home. When I brought her home…I almost took advantage of her Alex. She was so helpless, she would have been oblivious to anything I did to her.”
He had been right; Alex grew increasingly grim as he told his story. This wasn’t going to be pretty.
“Did you do anything?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I just kissed her, if I did more I wouldn’t have been able to stop myself.”
Alex sighed in relief; at least his friend had enough self-control to keep it in his pants.
“Daniel, you need to talk to her.”
Daniel stood the moment the words passed his lips. There was no way he could tell her, there was no way she would ever want to be near him after that. He would die if he lost her again, he couldn’t take that. He shook his head and backed towards the door causing Alex to stand, realizing he had pushed a little too forwardly.
“I can’t do that, she’ll hate me. I can’t lose her again Alex you don’t understand.”
“Daniel sit down, I’m just talking to you okay. But you have to consider talking to her about this. She’ll find out sooner or later, do you want her to hear you speaking her name in your sleep or do you want to talk to her about it and face the fact that she’s going to find out one way or another? If she truly loves you, as a brother or as more, then she’ll stay and if not, then she’ll leave and you’ll get over it.”
Daniel wanted to cry but held back the urge. So much energy and worry was surging through him it was a race on his spine, whatever reached his brain first got to knock him out.
“Fine…fine I’ll talk to her. But on my own terms, and on my own time. I don’t want to scare her, she’s kind of fragile right now.”
Alex nodded as he spoke agreeing with him that it would be best to wait. Daniel moved towards the door as Alex glided across the room to him, grabbing his arm and pulling him back to the couch.
“I think you should stay here for a bit and calm down. You shouldn’t drive in your condition, I’ll fix you something to eat.”
A/N: not really much going on in this one but it leads up to the next chain of events. It's actually really important and you finally meet his sweet gay partner Alex. he's quite a charater, i hope you all like him as much as I do. until next time xoxoxox
