``````````I stayed with Reena that night. Her arm wrapped protectively around me as though she was afraid I would disappear on her.
Within her arms I slept…
“Do I have to keep doing this?” I asked as Roxanne applied an antiseptic to my wounds.
“Unfortunately yes.” she said looking me in the eyes briefly. “Luckily for you these wounds are superficial.” her eyes went back to the cuts along my arms and shook her head “It’s amazing really.” my arm twitched as she tried to apply more to one of the deeper ones.
“That still hurts.” I whined. She ruffled my short hair and stood up, towering over me, I regarded her curiously. “Why are you so nice to me?” I asked slowly.
“Because you intrigue me Riona.” she replied
“And you’re the only one to use my middle name too… the others call me ‘Kit’ and the scientists keep calling me Neon.” I grumbled, causing her to laugh
“Oh, and before I forget, I need to introduce you to someone.” she moved towards the door of the first-aid room and looked back at me “Come on, I’ll take you to him.” I jumped off the low stool I was sitting on and followed her down several halls, past rooms for scientists and Souseiki alike, until we came to a halt in front of a room that could only serve as an office.
She knocked twice and a deep baritone voice answered for us to come in. When we did go in, I was greeted by the sight of a tall man with auburn hair that was cut close to his head with his eyes trained on a clipboard. I looked around the office and realized it was a lot bigger than I’d originally though it would be.
“You’re six years old now aren’t you?” he suddenly asked looking at me. I found my self slightly unnerved by his green and yellow eyes as I nodded
“Going to be seven next two months.” I said looking back to one of the pictures on the wall.
“Do you like it here?” he asked, I heard him shift in his chair and I turned back to him.
“I don’t understand the question…”
“She hasn’t really been outside the facility sir.” Roxanne said quickly and his face registered a light shock.
“So you were born here?” I shook my head
“I was here since I was two… of so the other scientists tell me, but I don’t remember much of anything.” I clarified. He smiled
“I’m Dr. Simion Richards.” he said warmly “I notice you have a few cuts there.” I raised my arms and stretched them out
“Yeah, I used to get worse…”
“Used to?” he looked intrigued as he got new information
“Uh huh. I couldn’t block the knives fast enough so some of them would pierce my skin really bad.” he smiled
“So you learn from you mistakes I take it.” I nodded and smiled
I was sitting in front a Roxanne again, this time she was taking blood samples from me.
“What are you going to do with that?” I asked as she put yet another syringe full into a test tube
“We are going to try a few more experiments with the other kids.” she said slowly, I looked away “We’re trying to find a way to get you results and less deaths Riona… you know that right?”
“What do you mean my results Roxy?” I asked looking back at her furious “I’ve been here for ten years and all I hear about are my result, my training my stamina, my everything@ is what I’m doing really that great? Am I really that great? NO! you guys just put me through more experiments more training for what?!” tears were in my eyes and I struggled to keep them from overflowing “I’ve lost my friends Roxy! They were my FRIENDS!!! But to you they’re just experiments and numbers… you are all the same!” I pushed her away before she could come near me with another syringe. She put down the needle on the counter behind her and took off her lab-coat, resting it on a chair before she tried to approach me.
“Riona… look at me.” I had averted my eyes as she came closer. She put a hand on my chin “Riona, I don’t want to hurt you, do you understand me?” I clenched my jaw as she pulled me to face her. “You can tell when people are lying to you, so listen to that instinct now. Does it tell you I’m lying?” I looked at her for a long moment before unclenching my jaw and whispering
“No.” she smiled
“I really want to help you kids, really, and we think that whatever is in your DNA that helped to assimilate to these experiments may be the key in keeping them alive.” I nodded, raising my hand to wipe the tears that had escaped “Come, I need one more sample.”
~In the Sininon region~
“Dr. Richards.” A short scientist walked up to the tall director “Has any progress been made in locating the runaways?” he asked while Simion kept his eyes glued out the window of the cafeteria.
“Not yet.” he replied “She is most elusive after all.”
“Ah… maybe we should think of deploying some of the operatives?” Simion turned his green and yellow eyes to focus on the short man
“You are suggesting things that have already been put into place dear sir.” a sick smile came across Simion’s features. “I hope you weren’t meaning to insinuate I haven’t been using every option to find those two, because you should know better than to question my authority in this matter.”
“Ah, yes sir… I was simply concerned for you… I happened to overhear the president talking with the CEO… they were saying something about replacements and funding.” Simion’s smile now became sadistic
“Thank you for the warning Trevors. I hope you don’t get caught in those replacements or budget cuts. What, seeing as you already have financial problems…” Trevors’ cocky look was instantly replaced by a frown as he excused himself. “I will have you again Neon…” Simion’s eyes wandered back out the window. “One way or another, I will have you.”
“How is he holding up to the treatment Dr. Mark?”
“Better than expected.”
“Is he ready for phase two?”
“I think he should get a bit more time to assimilate to the new procedure first.”
“We don’t have time to be wasting.”
“Sir with all due respect.” Dr. Mark stood to face her superior, “If we rush this procedure he will end up like all the others. He is not Neon!”
“Dr. Mark!” one of the lab techs watching the screens called out, “His vitals are fluctuating! He’s going down!”
“Stabilize him now!” Dr. Mark went back to her post and observed the numbers on the screen, barking out instructions to the team to adjust the chemical levels. When he had gone back into a stable zone she turned back to her superior, “I don’t think he will get past phase one of this process sir. We need to cut the losses while we’re ahead.”
“Very well… we’ll need to try with another experiment then.” Dr. Mark sighed and focused once again on her screen.
~Reena’s perspective~
I woke up with her still sleeping in my arms, and I raised myself slightly to see her face properly. All the worry that she seemed to carry around with her seemed to be lessened while she slept which caused me to smile. “You’re safe here…” I whispered moving some of the hair from her face. My door opened and I looked up as Kerri entered. She looked from me to Kit for a few moments before asking.
“Is this the girl who saved you from the organization?” I nodded
“I guess you could say we saved each other though.” I added looking back to her. Her eyebrows had drawn together and I rubbed my hand gently between them to make them relax. Kerri giggled
“She’s cute when she sleeps.”
“Don’t let her hear you say that. She’ll never admit it.”
“Alright, are you coming down for breakfast anytime soon. Jake is getting edgy.” I nodded as Kit snuggled closer to me, and barely repressed a smile.
“I’m not sure when I’ll be down, but I’ll come eventually.” I said giving her a clear indication to leave as I felt Kit start to get more awake.
“Who were you talking to?” she asked groggily, her eyes still closed
“Kerri. She came to ask if we were going to go down for breakfast.”
“I’ll go when Terri’s done. I don’t want to get on her nerves any more than I already am.”
“You’re not on her nerves.” I said sitting up and letting her head fall on the pillow. She opened her eyes and I saw a light in them that wasn’t there yesterday
“She doesn’t trust me Ree. Why must I push my presence on her any more than necessary?” she stretched, closing her eyes again. “Besides, I’ll like to stay in this bed a while longer.” wrapping her strong arms around a pillow, she turned over and steadied her breathing once more.
I watched her for about five more minutes before going downstairs.
