Chapter 8

Yaoi_Lover: And now another one! Truthfully, I wasn't planning on coming out with all those chapters, but I did, mostly because of some lovely reviews I got (Including yours.) and I also already had the chapters written. Thanks for the review!

Also, this is going to be the last chapter i'm going to get out this weekend, though I might manage to get ONE more out. I plan on updating Friday or Saturday. Or both ;)

Angel slept for the next few days, almost a week, before he showed any signs of waking up. The doctor wanted to try to give him medicine, do something, but it didn’t seem like there was anything wrong with the merman, other than an almost complete depletion of energy.

It also took around a week before the lab was completely cleaned up as well, and Leah’s body extracted. The next ship out was going to take Leah back to her family, to be buried. It also took on a few more of the workers.

A lot more people had gotten scared, and even some of the other scientists were wanting to close up shop. John reasoned that, if they got rid of the creature, then they’d get rid of the problem, and everything would be fine. The only thing wrong with his reasoning was that they couldn’t find the creature anywhere.

They had a few brave people try and track it, but whatever trail they found of it led to the river, and there was no way they could track it in the ocean. It had simply… vanished. There hadn’t even been anymore attacks.

Mrs. Barlows wouldn’t leave her room, and ordered everyone to stay out, opening the door only to get food and throw out dirty laundry. She wouldn’t even let Kevin leave.

She said she wasn’t going anywhere till the creature was dead, much to the scientists chagrin. They wanted to send her home, not wanting to get in trouble for putting her in danger. They were in enough shit as it was.

Vic tried to reason with the woman that they needed Kevin, just for a few moments for when Angel woke up, so the merman could tell them what the hell was after him, and as much information about it as he could. Anything to help kill it if it ever came back, but the damn woman said no!

No matter how much he argued and reasoned and threatened and begged, it was still no.

“Vic.” Hector came up behind the man, who was in the process of pounding on the woman’s door, trying to annoy her to listen to him.

“What!” Vic yelled, not caring how rude it was, because he was tired and pissed. Hector just waved it off, not letting it bother him.

“Angel woke up.”

“So?” Vic said hotly, making Hector glare, before picking him up and throwing him over his shoulder. “Let me down you oversized Neanderthal!” Vic screamed, surprised. He was too old to be slung over someone’s shoulder.

“Oh, Vic, that hurts,” Hector laughed as Vic calmed down, though he continued to hit the bigger man’s back, trying to get him to let him down.

Hector finally did set him down once the reached the infirmary. John and Damien were already there, and the doctor was waiting outside, mad that he had to be kicked out of his own office.

“Did you get the kid yet?” John asked angrily, after having an argument with Damien about what do with Angel after he woke up. The scientist thought that they should put him in a locked down, small vicinity, because they didn’t know what the merman would be capable of once he was awake, but Damien was adamant that he wouldn‘t do anything.

“Mrs. Barlows is as stubborn as a mull,” Vic grumbled, face flushed with yelling and embarrassment. “I thought you said he was awake?” He asked, looking over at the merman, who was still asleep.

“He is,” Damien replied, “ He opened his eyes a minute ago, the light might be a little much for him,” He explained.

Vic sighed, before flicking off one of the light switches, turning off half the lights. After a few moments, he saw Angel open his eyes.

The men weren’t sure what to do with him now that he was awake. Angel was still in his human form, and he didn’t seem hostile, like they thought he would’ve been, since they had locked him up in a glass display.

But he just sat there on the bed, looking at all the men grouped around him. John and the other scientists were standing up, while Damien had pulled up a chair near the head of his bed. He’d been sitting there for most of the last few days, watching over him to make sure that the creature from earlier hadn’t come back.

“You think he understands us?” Hector asked, and Vic shrugged.

“He might. He was able to understand Kevin, right?” He had a point.

“That is, if the kid was even telling the truth.” John had to put his two cents in.

“He wanted the watch, right? And the kid even said it.”

“Kids read a lot, he could’ve just been guessing.” John was persistent at shooting down whatever Vic had to say, and it was pissing the man off more than he already was.

“Figure it out yourself then!” the man finally snapped, surprising them. John, being the man he was, couldn’t help but yell back.

Eventually Hector was dragged into it himself, and the argument could be heard all the way down the hall.

“Will you all shut the fuck up!” Damien finally yelled out, and was rewarded with quiet. The scientists turned to look at him, John even to yell at him, but any harsh words died in this throat, as he saw what the merman was doing.

Angel was hiding, as best as he could, behind Damien, fingers clutching onto his arm, and his knuckles whitened. His face was buried into Damien’s shoulder, and he was shaking.

John sighed, feeling guilty, as well the other two scientists.

“If you’re going to fight, then go outside,” Damien said menacingly, his eyes showing that they’d better leave whether they were going to argue more or not.

John sighted again, before leading the other two scientists out. They’d do something about Angel later. Besides, it’s not like they could get something out of him without the boy anyway. John had half a mind to go in and just take Kevin, mother married to his employer or no, but he knew, in the end, that he couldn’t.

Damien managed to pry the merman’s fingers from his arm, and picked him up, surprising Angel, who grabbed onto his neck, holding on as if for dear life.

Damien managed to maneuver them enough until he was situated on the bed leaning back against the wall, with the merman sitting in his lap.

It was a bit awkward, but Angel fit nicely, and nestled his face against Damien’s neck, nudging at his hand, which came up to pet at the merman’s hair.

It was softer than Damien imaged it would be, and light. The strands seemed to float through his fingers. It was also shorter than he would’ve thought, going to just around the merman’s ears.

Angel finally stopped shaking when he felt his blanket pulled up, and then a hand resting on his waist.. Damien could feel all the tension leave the merman completely, and his body practically molding against his own.

“I wish I knew what you were thinking,” Damien voiced his thoughts aloud, and Angel looked up at him, a curious look on his face.

“It would help them out immensely, and might get you out of trouble. Find a way to get out in the commotion.” The black haired man went on, still petting Angel’s hair, who squirmed when he felt the other hand on his waist go under blanket, and start rubbing his back. He couldn’t help but nestle his head again, and purr at the feeling of it, surprising Damien.

“What the hell…?” He looked down at the merman, immediately thinking of a cat, though it felt wrong thinking it like that, since Angel was clearly part fish, if anything.

Angel looked up again, this time looking annoyed and stopped purring when Damien stopped his ministrations.

Again, Damien thought of cats, and had an odd idea. The hand in Angel’s hair went down, behind his ear, and started to rub. Angel closed his eyes, letting out a large breath, and the purring started up again.

Damien let out a quiet laugh, before leaning his head back against the wall. How was it that he was the one who had to do this? It was obvious in some way that the merman was attached to him, he just couldn’t figure out why. It couldn’t be just because of the watch, could it?

But, it was fine. He didn’t mind sitting here for a little while longer.

Before Damien knew it, he was asleep. Angel himself had dozed off only moments before.
