Chapter 8: A Peaceful Day

Darius had left her alone with the mare to bring out his stallion and get him all tacked up. Nyrobi had a few moments to familiarize herself with Kaytala. The mare was very sweet and gentle and apparently loved having her nose rubbed. Those big blue eyes were filled with intelligence. She was in great shape. Darius took good care of his horses.

Kaytala was totally calm with Nyrobi. That surprised her. Most of the horses in Nyru were mean tempered and didn’t much like being ridden. They were used for work and only the most daring warriors rode horses… well, really they were all ponies. Horses this size never would have fit in the Fortress.

Darius came out eventually, leading his huge stallion that stood at least a good three hands taller than Kaytala. He tied the stallion’s reigns to a post and walked over to help Nyrobi up on Kaytala’s back. Once up, she watched as the stable boys seemed to stay away from Darius’ mount and was a bit confused as to why. He seemed gentle enough. Darius hopped up on the stallion’s back and looked to Nyrobi, clearly checking to see if she was secure yet.

Riding a horse in a dress was a bit awkward and she ended up having to pull the dress up around her thighs and tuck it under her bum. They had to adjust the stirrups since Nyrobi was tiny compared to most people around these parts, but overall, she was pretty comfortable on the mare’s back.

Darius asked her something. This language barrier was a serious problem but at least she could figure out on her own that he was asking her if she was ready to go. She nodded and he nodded once back and urged his mount toward the forest. Nyrobi followed his lead until he urged her up beside him. Kaytala trotted nimbly to the stallion’s side and Nyrobi bounced in the saddle, laughing at the experience.

Darius grinned at her, surprised to see her seemingly carefree side for even a moment.

“Nyrobi,” He said, instantly catching her attention. He spoke again then stood in the saddle, all his weight on the stirrups. She watched him carefully and realized that he was waiting for her to do the same. She stood up, too. Darius nodded then sat down and back up again. She mimicked his movements and finally he urged his stallion into a trot, lifting himself and sitting down in time with his stallion’s gait. Nyrobi didn’t get a chance to prepare as her mare took off after his stallion and she clumsily tried to stand up and sit down in the saddle as he had done. It took her awhile to catch on but when she figured it out, she realized that her rear wasn’t going to be as sore when they finished their ride.

They trotted through the forest. It was unlike any forest she had ever seen. The trees were very different… for one, the leaves were much smaller and the ground didn’t have very much shrubbery at all. The trail they were on was made of dirt and absorbed a lot of the horses’ steps.

The trail led to a clearing, which had a decent size pond with big, golden fish swimming around in it with fan-like fins and a beautiful garden around it. Darius must be very rich indeed. Here, Darius dismounted and led his stallion to the water for a drink. Nyrobi did the same and as the mare drank, she looked around the area.
It was a beautiful day. Not a cloud was in the sky. She couldn’t remember a day with this much sunlight. The jungle’s canopy usually blocked out most of the light. The only places in all of Nyru that were above the canopy were the lookout on top of the Fortress and the pinnacle on top of the Temple of Bafia. Nyrobi could count on one hand how many times she’d been that high up in her life. This was certainly a different experience.

Really, though, this whole area was beautiful. It was unlike anything Nyrobi had ever seen before. Outside of this place, everything looked so… barren. Here, though, it looked natural and that was somehow comforting to Nyrobi.

Darius threw the reigns back over his stallion’s neck and let him wander around. He did the same for Kaytala, clearly not worried about either of them going too far, then took a seat near the water. There, he watched the fish swim around in the water until Nyrobi sat down near him.

She kept her distance, still uncertain of him. He only seemed interested in her to keep him company, but she couldn’t be sure. In Nyru, Nyrobi had always been told that men were tricky.

He was watching her and Nyrobi looked over at him. He made no attempt to hide that he’d been looking at her. Instead, he motioned for her to come closer. Hesitantly, Nyrobi stood up and walked closer then sat down, still keeping a few feet between them but was now within arm’s reach.

Darius flashed an amused look her way then reached over. His strong hands lifted her up off the ground and put her down next to him.

She’d tensed up when he touched her and did her best to avoid eye contact with him as she was so close to him. She was drawn to him and that frightened her. Not to mention, the feeling she’d gotten from that dream… she was embarrassed.

He spoke softly then and she was forced to look at him to try and interpret his words. She couldn’t understand him, but she could tell that he was worried and trying to be comforting to her. He clearly didn’t like that she was afraid of him, but he was willing to give her space until she got over that.

“I can’t understand you…” Nyrobi said, helpless on how else to respond.

Darius smiled and spoke again. This time she was at a loss for his meaning and once again cursed the language barrier.

The forest went silent again and Nyrobi just watched the fish swim around in the water. Darius was watching the water as well but the silence didn’t seem to bother him at all. It was so peaceful here. Nyrobi could have easily spent the rest of the day here but her mind began to wander quickly. She missed Nevi. There was no way to know if they’d ever see each other again. As for Nyru… well, she could continue to pray and look for a way to escape but every day held less and less hope for her return home. At least Darius didn’t seem to have any intention of hurting her.

Darius stood up suddenly and Nyrobi turned to look at him. He was looking at the sky and she could tell by the position of the sun that they’d been here for a few hours already. She was getting hungry again and no doubt, Darius had things to attend to.

She started to move to stand up and Darius offered her his hand to pull her to her feet. She accepted and they both walked toward the horses and mounted up. Darius was the first to head away from the clearing and Nyrobi was close to follow. Once again, he motioned for her to join him at his side and she urged Kaytala into a trot. This time, she didn’t bounce around as much and had more control of herself. Darius noticed her improvement and smiled at her encouragingly. She returned a shy smile and once they were back at the stable, he took the tack off of his stallion and helped her take everything off of Kaytala as well.

From there, he once again put his hand on her lower back and guided her out of the stable. Once outside, he walked beside her with his hands at his sides and Nyrobi crossed her arms against the cold of the coming night.

Cold also wasn’t something Nyrobi was used to. It was always hot in the jungle. That thought pulled at her heartstrings. Nyrobi was homesick and depressed but there was nothing she could do to change her fate at the moment. Darius had been kind to her so far… who was to say that if she managed to escape from him, she wouldn’t get caught and put back into slavery under a cruel master? She felt so helpless.

Darius seemed to notice that she was cold and took off his riding jacket to put around her shoulders. Nyrobi smiled up at him thankfully and they had reached the door of the mansion. A man was standing there waiting for them. As they approached, the man spoke to Darius and Darius frowned at the news. He opened the door for them and Darius put his hands on Nyrobi’s hips, guiding her into the house from behind then gave her a gentle push towards the awaiting maids as he headed off in a different direction.

Nyrobi was confused as to what had just happened but she didn’t get a chance to dwell on it as the maids began ushering her back up to her room.

A/N: Yeah, that was a pretty boring chapter, I know. I'm sorry. It'll get more exciting again soon, I promise. Don't forget to review or I'll think you don't like my story and won't update :(
