chapter 8
The next morning when Josie went outside Brian and Jeremy were there, like always. Josie lit a cigarette and stood in the road.
“TIME OUT” Brian yelled, standing and walking towards her.
“TIME IN!” Josie yelled back at him. “JEREMY ITS SOO GOOD TO SEE YOU HERE!” she said, mostly to get the message to Brian that she didn’t want to talk to him.
“I’m gonna go to breakfast now.” Jeremy said, feeling the tension. He got up and all but ran down the stairs to the cafeteria.
“Time out.” Brian repeated firmly. “I don’t usually do this, so you gotta listen cause I’m only saying it once, but damn, he had a bite wound on his tongue, so, I’m sorry I doubted you.”
“Why did you doubt me?”
“I didn’t at first, I just, after the fight with Jerome I wanted to know I was right.”
“And you couldn’t just ask?”
“I did in a round a bout sort of way.”
“Time in.” Josie said, and went to the cafeteria to get a cup of coffee.
Later that afternoon when the bell rang Josie was reminded that it was Tuesday. A bunch of “new employees” were standing around the smoking area. It felt like such a long time ago Josie was that lost, lonely teen that had been pushed into the unknown. It had only been one week. Josie cursed and decided she was in hell. Time dragged by and you got tortured all day. Josie was certain this was the low point of her life. Josie sat on the bench across from Brian and lit a cigarette.
“Time out.” Brian said “You know you want one.”
“I’ll take her,” Josie said, pointing to a blonde girl. Josie saw in her what everyone had seen in Josie, good girl from a small town. “Yes you!” she said when she got the girls attention “Come on over, have a seat, Chris get off the bench. Time in. I’m Josie. Whats your name?”
“Lisa.” the blonde answered. “Whats up?”
“Last week I was in your position and lucky for me, I had Brian over there take me under his wing. Now this week, its time for me to have someone. We’ll start with the basics…” Josie went into detail about cigarette prices and the whole “talking” thing before Lisa had to go in. Later that night on her way out for a cigarette, Josie ran into Lisa. They went out for a cigarette together and Josie introduced her to Chris and Jay who were outside. Everyone was getting along fine until Josie saw Nick heading over from the rec.
“Shit we didn’t tell her about Nick! See him” Josie said, gesturing to Nick “stay away from him, I’ll explain later, play along.”
“Hi Josie. Who’s your new friend?” Nick asked, looking at Lisa.
“This is Lisa, a devout Christian.” she said, biting her tongue to keep from laughing. She heard Jay and Chris choking back their own laughter on the bench. Lisa stepped toward Nick and took hold of his hand gently.
“Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your lord and savior?” she asked, straight faced. Nick pulled his hand out of hers and walked the other way without another word.
“Okay so that was Nick.” Josie told Lisa “He’s a fucking lunatic, stay away from him. Come on, lets go for a walk.” Josie said, leading Lisa away from Jay and Chris. “Look I don’t want them to know but Brian said the exact same thing to me last week and I didn’t listen. Nick assaulted me so just trust me on this one.”
“Yea okay.” Lisa said.
