Chapter Eight
“For God’s sake, don’t kill his parents, that’s not what we want.” The man on the other end of the line hissed. Randy scratched at his chin.
“Well, what do we do then? They probably won’t be very hospitable, if they know that their son is hiding from me. Can you meet them and find out, since you are oh so opposed to me dealing with them?” Randy barked into the phone. The man on the other end sighed.
“I can’t come up there and ask them where their kid is. It’ll blow my cover. It’s you that the cops want anyway, not me.”
“Fuck you.” Randy muttered.
“Listen, if you kill them, then you can forget it. Our deal is off.”
“Well what the fuck am I supposed to do?!” Randy yelled into the pay phone, spittle flying.
“Why don’t you act like one of his friends then? Sweet talk your way into it. Chances are they haven’t heard from their kid yet, otherwise they would have run to the authorities like a bunch of overprotective parents, or worse yet, disappear like him and his bitch.”
“What should I say then?” Randy asked.
“You’ll know what to say. And God damn, clean up a little. If they have been watching the news, they’ll know what you look like, and then we’ll never find that douche bag and his whore. Get to it.” The man hung up with a sharp ‘click’, leaving Randy fuming.
He couldn’t go against orders though, and if they wanted Grey’s parents alive, he would be making a big mistake by offing them. He would play the friend card, and if the shit hit the fan, he could always torture his parents to get the answer from them.
Deciding that that was the best way to go about it, Randy set out to change his look. He didn’t want them recognizing him from the news, otherwise things would get messy.
--------------------------
Grey was unusually quiet that afternoon. Naomi knew he was quiet by nature, but he had barely spoken a word to her for the entire day so far. That was very strange. She came into the living room and saw him sitting on the couch, reading. Moving towards him, she took a seat across from him and studied his profile.
Right away she noticed that something was amiss. Grey was usually a healthy skin colour, but in the afternoon light his skin looked sallow. He had dark circles under his eyes, his dark hair a startling contrast to his pale skin.
“Are you alright?” She asked. Grey spared her a glance, his brown eyes looking even darker in his sick state.
“I’m fine.” He said, turning back to his book. She frowned.
“Okay. That wasn’t really a question. I know that you’re not fine, so why don’t you tell me what’s up?” She crossed her arms over her breasts. He sighed, knowing that he wasn’t going to find an easy way out of this interrogation.
“I just haven’t been sleeping well, that’s all. Nothing more to it.”
Although lack of sleep could contribute to the dark circles, she knew that the sickly colour of his skin was something else altogether. Naomi knew that he was eating well, and drinking enough, so that he definitely wasn’t dehydrated. Leaning in, she put a hand across his forehead. His cheeks had a tinge of red in them, so she suspected that he was coming down with something.
“Yeah, big boy. Just tired? You have a fever.” He tried to protest, but he knew she was right. He could feel it coming on for the past couple of days now. It had been a long time since he had gotten sick, and he really didn’t want to admit that he was feeling ill.
“I have to get wood for the fire.” He tried to excuse himself, only to find Naomi glaring him down.
“I’ll get the wood, you get into bed. You’re in no shape to be going outside in that cold wind and working against your body.”
“But isn’t it to heavy for you?” He asked. Naomi huffed.
“It’s just fine. I can make a few trips if I need to.” Getting behind him, Naomi pushed him towards his bedroom, waiting to see him actually get into bed before going outside.
*He really did look tired…*
Grabbing a pile of firewood from just outside the cabin, she went inside and placed it by the fireplace. Thinking that she should take in another pile incase it snowed again, she left for outside.
Upon entering the cabin again and placing the pile down beside the other, she went to Grey’s room to look in on him. He had his eyes shut, lounging on top of the covers. She spoke quietly.
“I’m going to the grocery store. I’ll be back soon.” He cracked open an eye to look at her, and nodded. She grabbed his keys and headed outside towards his car. He would need some gingerale, soup, and medicine, if he wanted to get better soon. Naomi hoped that he wasn’t too sick – she knew he wouldn’t be happy if he was throwing up for the next few days.
---------------------
Randy sat in Grey’s parents living room, looking quite different from his old self. He smiled at Grey’s parents, though the action pulled painfully on the muscles in his face. He really just wanted to shoot them both in the head, but he had been ordered not to. He had to follow orders.
“My oh my, we hardly have the pleasure of Grey’s friends visiting anymore. He’s so busy nowadays, with all those comic book jobs he has taken on.” Grey’s mother, Susan, had said, smiling at Randy. Edward, Grey’s father, nodded in agreement.
“Yes, he comes by a lot though, whenever he can at least. We’d like to see more of him, and he said he would pay us a visit as soon as his new project went through.”
“We’re so proud of him.” Susan said, clasping her hands in front of her. Randy cleared his throat.
“I was supposed to meet him myself actually. I went to his place and he wasn’t there. There was a note that said
he had gone away for the week. I was just wondering if you happened to know where?” Randy tried to put on the sweet act as soon as possible, knowing he was successful when Susan laughed.
“Yes, sometimes he disappears for awhile. An artist’s temperament, I’m sure. He has a cottage about 2 ½ hours from here, along the ocean. I’m not sure if he’ll want to be disturbed or not, you see. He asked us not to disclose the property location to anyone, and we have to do as he wishes. You see, he purchased it around 4 years ago, after his fiancée had passed away from drowning. Accidental, of course, but he needs to go away for awhile to find his peace.”
“Our son has a quiet nature, and while you are a friend of his, we wouldn’t be very good parents if we broke our promise to our son and told you where he is.” Edward said. Randy tried not to wring his neck. Thinking of playing his final card, he hung his head.
“Well, the truth is, he’s there with a woman. I’m almost certain it’s my wife. She’s pregnant with our first child. I don’t think this is a friend visit either, I need to find them.” Randy hoped that he had sounded broken enough. The silence in the room was deafening. Susan shared a look with her husband.
“Oh dear. I’m very sorry, and I know you sought us out for help, but we just can’t tell you where he is. We swore not to, and we hold our word.” Susan looked apologetic. Randy realized he would get nothing out of his parents.
“Thank you for your time.” He stood up, leaving for the door. Susan followed him out.
“I’m sorry there wasn’t more that we could do for you. I can tell you that Grey is a very honourable man, and that if he was indeed there with your wife, it is probably for a good reason.”
Randy kept on walking towards his car. Susan waited until he left before closing her door.
“That was a strange man.” Edward said. Susan agreed.
“Yes. Do you believe what he said? About Grey with another woman?” Susan asked. Edward shrugged his shoulders.
“Well, it’s nice to hear Grey is with a lady. I hope it isn’t that man’s wife though.”
“I just can’t see him doing that though.”
“Me neither.”
Susan headed back into the living room, towards the telephone.
“I’m going to give him a call and get this story out of him. It just seems too weird for me.”
---------------------
Randy called his boss.
“They’re not budging.” He said.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, they aren’t telling me where the FUCK he is.” Randy spat.
“No worries. We’ll find a way around this. They’re not going anywhere – no one is.”
-----------------
Naomi came back, groceries in hand, hearing Grey talking to someone. Since she didn’t hear anyone else’s voice, she assumed he was on the phone. Heading towards the kitchen, she poured a glass of gingerale to sooth his stomach, and set out to make some chicken soup. Anything with dairy in it would just upset his stomach, so she stayed away from cream of broccoli, even though she was craving it.
She came into his room, with his drink and soup, just as he was hanging up the phone. Sitting on the foot of the bed, she handed him the items, which he took with a smile.
“Thanks.” He said, setting the gingerale down on his nightstand. He stirred at his soup with his spoon, waiting for it to cool.
“What was that about? I thought no one had the phone number for this place.” She said. He nodded.
“Just my parents.”
“Oh yes, that’s right.”
“Randy visited them today.”
“Oh my God!” Naomi clasped her hands over her mouth, eyes wide. Grey shook his head.
“He didn’t hurt them. They didn’t know who he was at first. He pretended to be a friend of mine, wanting to find out where we went. Said you were his wife, to try and guilt them into telling them our location. Made it look like we were having an affair.”
“Sneaky little shit.”
“Yeah well, my parents know me better. They didn’t fall for it. They wanted to check everything with me though, and now they’re worried for the both of us.”
“And hopefully over their own safety as well!” Naomi said worriedly. Grey nodded.
“Yes, they’re contacting the police department as we speak. They’re curious about you though, and don’t think you should be running around so close to delivering a baby.” Naomi rolled her eyes.
“I’m fine, and I’m not that close. Another three months of this.” She said, rubbing her stomach. Grey laughed.
“Yeah, I guess it would feel like a long time. Bet you’ll be glad when your baby is born.” Grey said. Naomi smiled.
“Glad and sad. The pregnancy has been easy so far. Of course, I’ll be happy when Sunshine makes its grand debut, but who knows when I’ll have my next baby?”
Grey thought about changing the subject. He knew about the fatherless dilemma Naomi’s baby was in, and what Naomi said about it. She was a lovely woman, with silken blonde hair and big caramel coloured eyes, with qualities models would kill for. She also wanted the best for her child, and was feeling more vulnerable than she let on. Grey felt a twinge of sadness for her.
“So, you’re really set on waiting until the baby is born to find out its gender?” Grey asked. Naomi nodded, grinning.
“Yup. I’ll have names picked out for if it’s a boy or girl. It really doesn’t matter to me. I’ll be happy for either.”
Grey smiled, trying his soup. It had cooled enough for him to eat. He felt instantly better, having Naomi around, attending to him. It was nice to be doted on every once in awhile. He hadn’t had that for a very long time.
When he was done, Naomi stayed with him and talked for awhile, until he grew too tired to keep up his end of the conversation. Naomi left so that he could get some rest, and hopefully battle his fever.
