Chapter 8
The Sea Noose
The feeling of a wet nose on my cheek awoke me from my light doze. I opened my eyes and smiled at Vitas, his tail was wagging wildly. I looked over to the door and saw Cian standing there, smiling.
“Didn't think you'd go back to sleep.” I rolled my eyes.
“I was just lying down, waiting for you to get back and there was nothing to entertain me so I dozed a bit, that's all.” he nodded.
“Well, in any case, I must be off. I was able to get a start on packing while Vitas answered the call of nature in the backyard.” I smiled softly.
“I'll see you in about a week, then.” he shrugged and shuffled his feet.
“Yeah... I guess so. Uh... I'll see you later, then, Kassy. Bye.” he gave me a small wave and walked back down the hall, closing the door behind him. I sighed and looked down to Vitas. He was sitting next to the couch, his head resting on the cushion, looking at me. When the sound of Cian's car had faded into the distance I told him,
“Your master sure is one smart cookie.” Vitas huffed softly. I smiled. “I know, love, I know.” I got up off the couch, Vitas started wagging his tail again. I patted his head and walked to the spare bedroom, Vitas following me happily. Once I stepped foot into the room, Vitas forgot about me and made a bee line to his toys. If it was possible, his tail wagged harder. I laughed softly, Vitas barely spared me a glance before happily nosing his toys about the room.
I whistled once, a loud, sharp noise. Vitas snapped his head towards me. I smiled and whistled again. He cocked his head to the side. I whistled again and he barked. I toed a toy towards him and he leaped at it, attacking it as if it were a small fly he was chasing. I laughed and he looked up at me again. I bent down and snatched the toy from him. He leaped up and I threw his toy down the hall. The sound of his nails scratching against the wood floors were barely heard as I continued to play with him.
Later in the day, sometime in the afternoon, I was sitting out side in the swing once more on the porch with Vitas bounding back and forth between me and the golden grass happily. I kept throwing a stick as I sat swinging, and he would chase after it, bringing it back to be thrown again. After awhile, when my arm was just started to get a little bit sore, he brought the stick back and layed at my feet, panting heavily. I smiled and quickly went into the house, coming back out moments later with a bowl filled with water.
I set the bowl down in front of him and watched as he lapped up the water gratefully. I smiled and sat back down, tucking my legs underneath me. I wedged my fingers between my thighs, the cold air causing my hands to have a slight blueish color to them. Vitas finished drinking what he wanted to and held the stick back up to me. I smiled and threw it once more, into the golden grass and watched as he bounded enthusiastically after it.
When the sky started showing small hints of getting dark, I stood from the swinging chair and stood by the now open door. When Vitas appeared once again from the golden grass he bounded over to me, dropping the stick on the porch and and trotted through the door. I followed him, locking the door behind me. He made himself comfortable in front of the small fire that was going. I quickly nuzzled another log underneath the one currently burning and went into the kitchen.
I opened one of the cans of food that Cian had left on the table and spooned it out into a bowl and threw the can away. I brought the bowl of his food into the living room and sat it down next to him. He didn't touch it right away, too content with where he was to move. I yawned and rolled my shoulders, shaking away the cold stiffness that had built up from the time spent outside. Vitas glanced at me and stretched too, before starting to eat his food.
I put another log in the fireplace, putting a small space between the one I had put in minutes before and the new one. I gave Vitas one more scratch behind the ears before leaving him be in living room. I made my way once again to my room, changing out my jeans for a pair of cotton shorts. I slid underneath the covers and rested my head on the pillow, closing my eyes.
I took a deep breath and let my mind wander. I don't know how long I lied there, my mind swinging from topic to topic before I fell asleep, my breathing deep and even.
