Thump!

Kari jumped in her sleep and, quite unwillingly, opened her eyes. She had slept amazingly hard after their late night lovemaking and now woke to a very beaten and very sore body. Her back hurt, her vagina hurt, and most of all her shoulder gave her its complaints as soon as her mind was awake enough to receive them.

She lifted her head slowly to peer at her Master. He sat on the edge of the bed, his strong back facing her stiffly as he pulled on his boot, which met the floor hard after he slipped it on. Thump! Something was wrong. His beautiful hair cascaded down his back as he rested his forearms on his thighs, his head bowed as he sighed heavily.

“I have to go to the kingdom Tamari. I feel that my sister is there and I have to end her before she gathers more Sali.”

Silence, Kari listened intently as he spoke, not exactly catching what he was trying to tell her.

“It’s a three day journey by boat from here, but a one and a half by horse. It will be dangerous, she knows I’m looking for her and will do anything to stop me before I reach her.”

He turned and peered at her over his shoulder, his gray eyes cold and calculating as he spoke.

“Kari I release you from my service, you are no longer Sali to me. Return to your home little bird, you can help me no longer.”

He had stood and escaped her hand that grasped for him as he strode to the door, his sentence ending with his hand on the brass knob. It was crazy, go back? To what?

“Master please-“

“I am not your Master any longer, you are free to do as you wish now.”

Kari jumped from the bed, the covers around her naked body to hold some decency, as she tried to stop him. But it was too late; he had opened the door and walked through, leaving it cracked behind him. What had she done to upset him? She looked about quickly to find a shirt and slipped it on. It was a long shirt, his shirt, so it covered her well enough. Discarding the blanket she darted into the hall and caught his form as he stood at the head of the stairs.

“Master!”

He paused, it was all she wanted him to do, all she needed as she ran down the hall to him and threw her arms around his waist. She buried her face in his hair and drank in his scent as he stood stiffly in her arms.

“Please don’t leave me, I can’t go back, I can never go back.”

He lowered his head but still stood still and straight, not yet yielding to her embrace.

“I have nothing left but you, I had nothing before you, please…”

Tears began to form behind her eyes and burst forth without any delay. His gentle hands found her wrists and pried her hands apart, letting them fall from his grasp. It was all that was holding her, shock and fear had caused her to loose feeling in her legs as her knees hit the floor roughly. He turned and faced her, going to the floor as he took her strongly into his arms.

“You can’t stay with me little bird.”

Limp, her body lost all strength as she went completely soft in his arms, crying out her sorrow as he pushed her further and further away from him. She stole a look at his face; she wanted to see his cold eyes, his slate expression. But she found herself staring at neither.

His face was soft above her, his eyes lightly shut as tears fell past his beautiful lashes and rolled steadily down his cheeks. His eyes opened slightly, shedding a gentle look to her as his lashes meshed with his color. Tears escaping their now opened confines.

“I am a monster, and little birds don’t stay with horrid monsters.”

His brow furrowed painfully as his gaze fell to her bare shoulder, it had slipped from its confines when she had ran after him and now showed them both the damage he could do. A deep wound planted into her flesh, inflicted by his fangs the night before and now was dried looking and scabbed. His fingers found her hurt and gently stroked it, enticing a small wince from her as he did so. He looked away, his gaze falling to the floor between them as he went cold again, distant from her again.

“Monsters kill little birds.”

He stood briskly, escaping her grasp as Kari was struck with the full force of his words. But before he turned she clutched the fabric of his shirtsleeve, pulling him back just once more.

“What if the little bird loves the horrid monster?”

He paused and faced her, desperation was clear across her face but so was sincerity. She did love him, and the thought didn’t strike her until now, when everything she cared about hung in the balance. She continued, more confidently this time.

“Because whether the monster stays or leaves, the little bird will die either way.”

His tears formed fresh in his eyes as he hit his knees before her, taking her face gently in his hands to kiss her. He gazed at her a moment afterwards before placing his forehead to hers.

“If the little bird loves the horrid monster, then the monster stays, and protects the little bird from all the other monsters.”

He picked her up from the floor and walked back to their room, closing the door quietly behind them as he sat her down.

“Get dressed, we have far to go today.”

She smiled to him as she nodded and went to the dresser to find clothes.

“Yes Master.”

He turned to her and lightly put a hand to her cheek, turning her gaze to meet his as seriousness set into him again.

“I’m Alek, and from now on we’re equals.”

She smiled at his hard tone and wiped away the remains of his previous tears as he closed his eyes to her touch.

“I love you Alek.”

His hand found hers against his cheek as he entwined his fingers with hers.

“I love you too Kari.”
