chapter 8

She unwraps the painting and hangs it on the wall across the room from the grand piano. She grabs the rest of her bags and heads upstairs. She heads into the room where you are sleeping. She does what she has been ordered to do and leaves.

Hours pass and you suddenly start to awaken. That smell you think to yourself. You slowly open your eyes and look around the room. On the pillow next to you there are lavender roses with sprigs of real lavender entwined in the branches. You slowly sit up and reach over to touch the flowers.

“Ah Mistress you’ve awakened. “ Miranda says as she enters the room.

“Have you talked to him yet tonight?” You reluctantly ask.

“Where do you think your flowers came from love? He had me out shopping up a storm today. Here’s some of the other stuff he had me pick up today. He humbly requests you get dressed and meet him in the study. I think my dear he would like to see you wear what I have here in the bag.” Miranda explains.

You reach in the bag and pull out a white lace dressing gown identical to the one he gave you before. There was also a white garter belt, white silk stockings and white slippers. You get up and Miranda leaves you so that you can get dressed in private. You slowly begin to change clothes. Your fear for him has been building all night. What if Miranda is wrong? What if he decides he doesn’t want the challenge of dealing with you? You finish dressing and Miranda comes back into the room.

“Are you ready?” She asks.

You nod your head and she smiles.

“It’s okay dear you don’t have anything to worry about.” She states as she notices you are shaking.

She leads you down to the study. You can hear music coming from the room. You slowly open the door and walk into the room. It’s pretty dark with only a few candles to light the room but you can see him sitting at the piano in a white shirt, black pants and knee high boots. He’s playing Moonlight Sonata. You walk a little closer and just stand there waiting to see what happens next.

“I could smell the lavender just as soon as you walked in the door. You’re scared of me. Don’t be. I would never hurt you. You should know this by now.” He says as he keeps right on playing.

You move closer to him not knowing exactly what to expect. He doesn’t even look back so you move to where you are right behind him. You place a shaking hand on his shoulder.

“Why are you shaking so badly my love? Are you that frightened of me?” He asks as he stops playing and turns around.

“Sometimes. Sometimes you scare me just by the way you look at me.” You softly say looking down to avoid looking into his eyes.

He reaches over and holds your hands in his. He pulls you closer to him.

“I know this is hard for you my love and I have not been as patient or forthcoming with you as I should be. I look at you sometimes and just cannot believe you are real. If anyone should be afraid, it should be I.” He states.

“Now why would you ever be afraid of me?” You ask with a slight laugh.

“You love, have haunted me for centuries. And now you’re here with me and I cannot believe my torment is finally over. You can not know what I’ve gone thru in my lifetime.” He says as he cups his hand under your chin and brushes his thumb over your lips.

“I’m afraid I don’t understand. How could I possibly haunt you for years?” You inquire in a confused tone.

“Come with me and I’ll show you.” He says.

He stands up and grasps your hand. He leads you over towards the other wall of the room. There is a sheet of black velvet hanging over a painting on the wall.

“This painting has followed me throughout the world. No matter where I was or what I was doing I would come across this painting somehow. I finally bought it in London about two weeks before Van Helsing put me in the coffin. I thought I maybe never see it again but yet a month ago it showed up here in New Orleans. They say this painting is cursed because many people have died shortly after buying it. I think it’s because the Fates wanted me to own this like they wanted me to have you.” He explains.

“I don’t believe in fate.” You say.

“Ah but after you see this, you will believe, my love” He states as he pulls the velvet off the painting.

You look at the painting and gasp. It’s a painting of a beautiful angel all in white. She’s looking into a full length mirror and her reflection is that of a dark mistress. You look closely at the angel’s face and see your own. You back up but run right into him. You start to shake as you look at the painting. You know he’s not lying about this.

“That room...it’s my apartment in New Orleans. That’s my mirror, you can tell by the beads hanging on the side. And there’s my pot of lavender. This cannot be. “ You say sounding very frightened.

“Its okay love, it’s okay. There’s no need for you to be afraid. I’m here with you.” He softly whispers in your ear.

“Cover it back up. Just cover it back up.” You cry as you brake away from him.

You go over and lean against the piano. This is too much you think to yourself way too much. He comes over beside you. You feel a fog come over yourself a very think fog and it’s hard to breathe. You suddenly feel very light headed.

“Love, are you okay?” He asks in a concerned tone.

You nod your head no slightly and then everything goes black. He catches you in one swoop and scoops you up into his arms. He carries you out of the study and down into the crypt. Miranda seeing this comes running into the room.

“What happened?” She asks.

“I showed her the painting.” He replies as he lays you softly down on the bed and sits down beside you.

“Master she’s just been thru a lot in the last few days. It’s a lot for her to take in.” Miranda says as stands up.

“Yeah and I really don’t help matters any do I?” He says angrily as he punches the wall on his way out of the room.
