Bloodlines
Sorry for the lack of an update yesterday, I was drawing a blank as to what to write. Long story short, I listened to a lot of music and thought of a lot of different scenarios and this seems to be what came out. Hope you like it...
Kara stood in a foot of snow, dressed in her wife beater and kapris she was freezing. The wind blew around her wildly even with the sparse bare trees to help block it. Her hair whipped around her face and shoulders, stinging where it struck but it did little to pull her eyes from before her. A large portal stood swirling angrily. A large creature, very much like Dallon was yelling and howling in a language she didn’t understand. He looked ancient, his eyes were fogged over with blindness and his height was brought down by a crook in his back. Despite the cold many others that were much younger stood around her in their scant animal skins howling and calling in response to the elders rally. He would call forward a male or a female and sniff them and then push them back to the excited mass. Some were fighting with each other, the sound of fangs finding flesh rang out loud as cries of the wounded or dying rose to the stars. Kara pressed her hands to her ears hard, trying to drown out the nose as she shut her eyes. She didn’t want to see any of it. Everything went silent.
Kara slowly lowered her hands and opened her eyes, she was standing on a cliff, a small light was shining up warmly and the smell of smoke stung her nose. She walked closer to the ledge and peered over, her breath catching in her throat. The ground was broken and sparse, some places sticking up jaggedly while others had dropped out of view. Molten rock was flowing across the land, spurting up, devouring plants and animals alike. She looked away as Dallon stood beside her staring out over the cliff.
“Our whole world looks like this now, save a few places to the north but soon they will be gone too.”
Kara found her voice but it wavered in her throat.
“Why is this happening?”
She looked up at him, his eyes locked on the broken land.
“Humans, they’ve been dead for a very long time in my world but they left their mark in their time.”
Kara inhaled heavily, the air seemed thick.
“What are the portals?”
He looked to the sky longingly as cries of others like him rang across the sky.
“They’re arcs, given to man at the dawn of creation.”
She fell to her knees; her hand going to her throat as she gasped for air, her chest began to burn.
“Humans used them as you do, when they were meant as an escape. They used up the earth’s time, and now my people are dying. Only a few may escape before the end.”
Kara coughed, blood spraying onto the white snow as Dallon squatted in front of her. She met his grey gaze as she wheezed.
“What…powers….the arcs?”
Dallons hand wriggled down into the snow his claws fingers coming back to the surface with wet dark dirt.
“The earth.”
A sudden pain seized Kara’s chest as she clutched at her throat, feeling her final breath slip from her. Dallon’s fingers against her cheek sent her into darkness.
Kara stirred as she stretched out an arm, it met no resistance. She opened her eyes to find Dallon gone, she was sure it was still early morning; the others were still lying around her. She could feel the breath of the young female falling against her back, in front of her the broad back of the lanky male. Over her head she could hear the low rumble of Gallet’s breathing. She sat up and looked around; Dallon was sitting to himself, looking up at the observation window. A lone handler was sitting by the window, dead asleep. Kara got up and carefully stepped over the scattered bodies. Her feet padded lightly on the cold floor sending chills through her body. She squatted down next to Dallon wrapping her arms about her legs as she rested her chin on her knees.
“You did well with Gallet.”
She scoffed at his praise.
“If it wasn’t for you he would have eaten me.”
Dallon laughed a little, a wide smile flashing his fangs.
“He understands now that you won’t be caught off guard, even without me you planted a firm knee in his ribs, he’ll still feel that when he wakes up.”
Kara sighed and let silence pass between them for a moment.
“Why do you show me such things in my sleep?”
Dallon sighed and stretched his back before leaning back on his hands, his legs crossed in front of him. He was wearing a loose pair of basketball shorts the handlers had left for them to explore but nothing else. She assumed anything more would be too warm on him since his temperature was always so high.
“It’s important that you know these things.”
She wanted to grumble to herself but she refrained from doing so. He leaked a little to her but refused to reveal the whole picture to her. She wondered why.
“You’re still confused about your place?”
She glanced at him over her shoulder; he was watching her closely, gauging her reaction to his words. His body looked stretched the way he leaned back, his muscles taunt along his shoulders and down his arms as he held himself. His chest and abdomen defined as his shorts lay low on his waist. She blushed and looked away.
“I understand Gallet is your brother. The little female seems to be the lowest but I think that’s because she’s still an adolescent. I already established myself with Waylen…”
She trailed off, where did she fall exactly?
“Alora is just scared; she doesn’t understand what’s going on. And Balek is fond of her; he intends to claim her when she comes of age.”
Kara furrowed her brow and risked a glance at him.
“Claim her?”
Dallon nodded, his long fingers going to the scar on her shoulder he had given her.
“It’s when a male dominates a female, if she succumbs to his abuses then she is his to do as he will.”
Kara swallowed, her throat was suddenly dry. Dallon’s movements stopped as he stood smoothly and turned his head towards the door. It buzzed open, allowing a tall female enter. The handlers released the control stick around her neck and hastily shut the door. She was tall and lean like the others but of a slightly smaller build. She was mature, close to Dallon’s age and gorgeous. Her long raven hair fell about her shoulders in loose curls, her green eyes locked on Kara immediately. Her lip curled menacingly as a growl roused several of the others on the mattresses. Alora pranced over to her and tried to nuzzle at her but she yelped quickly and ran as the female laid open her shoulder with her teeth. Dallon growled low as Gallet got to his feet to watch.
“Dallon, my love, such a nasty trick to leave me to die like the rest of the garbage.”
Waylen watched her move carefully, weighing his decision to approach carefully.
“I chose my pack, as the elders asked.”
The female laughed as she slowly crossed the room.
“Your run away brother, two lower order males an adolescent bitch and this human?”
Dallon’s words were barely audible through is growl.
“Watch your tongue Layerta, or I’ll rip it out.”
She laughed, a sound somewhere between a melody and a snarl.
“Spoken like a true alpha. I’m proud of you Dallon; I’m here to take my rightful place.”
Dallon jutted his chin up aggressively, a signal of a challenge. His stance became loose as his fingers spread, ready for an attack.
“You’re rightful place was with the others, as decided by the elders. I wanted to die with my brothers and sisters, but I was told my rightful place was here. You have shamed yourself and your race by coming here. If you wish to redeem yourself, return to our home and destroy the portal, so no others may choose the path you have chosen. May the gods have mercy on you.”
Dallon turned to leave her; she was only three yards away as she clenched her teeth in rage. She ran at him, claws bared, but before Kara could warn him Dallon turned, his whole hand connecting with the side of her head diverting her course as she slammed against the hard floor and slid. The sheer strength of the strike amazed Kara, almost as much as the female taking her feet again with little more than blood on her cheek.
“You take this human to your side! You taint our blood and doom our future! How can you speak of honor and redemption when you’ve condemned us all!”
Dallon turned on her; for once his voice was raised and echoed through the large room.
“She is mine to do with as I will, as is everyone in this room! This was forced upon me and I am making the best of what was given! The only future for me now is cold concrete and selective breeding, and so is the future for hundreds of generations until we are freed once more. Too much fire is burning in your bones, for this damnation is different than the sentence given to our brothers and sisters. They were released in my eyes, and for their precious sacrifice so must I suffer to ensure there is a future to look forward to. Perhaps then they will live again.”
Layerta clenched her fists as Gallet approached her, trying to give comfort. Kara’s head was spinning from the ordeal; she didn’t understand what they were saying. Her mind kept going back to the dream, to the portal and the large aged creature that was turning away so many. They were fighting and squabbling and even killing each other.
“Beatern, my precious brother is dead. The male you had chosen for me has perished as well.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she spoke.
“You are mine Dallon; our bloodlines joined would be pure and true to our nature.”
Dallon looked away from her, his gaze falling on Kara as he spoke.
“If you must make a bloodline you and my brother can make a pup of sin. For neither one of you should be here, his blood is as good as mine.”
Layerta shook her head angrily.
“He doesn’t hold the touch of the gods as you do! To claim him as your equal is near blasphemy.”
Dallon’s words were low, his gaze going to the floor as he spoke.
“Then you have no use for me but to perish.”
Layerta fell to her knees as Gallet tried to comfort her, Dallon turned and walked away, going to the latrine for seclusion. Kara followed, not wanting to stay in the heavy atmosphere. She slowly let herself into the small room. Dallon was sitting on the floor, his back against the wall as he held his head in his hands.
“Close the door.”
She obeyed and walked over to him. His hand reached up to hers and yanked her down hard; he forced her to his lap until she was straddling him. She blushed and tried to squirm away as his long arms wrapped her in an iron hold, his head resting on her chest just under her chin.
“Dallon…”
He held her tighter when she spoke, unwilling to let her go.
“Please, just let me stay like this, just for a little while.”
She sighed and embraced him, her fingers creating trails in his hair as she nuzzled him.
“She has a point Dallon. If what you’ve shown me is true, a pure bloodline is needed.”
Dallon growled a warning in his chest as his claws found the flesh of her back. Kara winced.
“Why does pain look so good on you?”
He dragged his claws down her back as she threw her head back, sucking in a breath through her teeth. Dallon’s claws found the skin of her collar bone and left a light mark. She looked back down at him as he pulled himself up, his warm lips meeting hers.
“The elders chose my future; they will not choose my mate.”
hehe kk hope you liked it, please let me know what you think!
