This chapter, once again, is shorter than some others I've posted but I promise the end of this one will make your jaw drop....
James carefully dialed the phone, making sure the number was right before hitting the talk button. He sat in the bathroom, a box of pancake mix in his shaking hand as he wiped the tears away from his face. Sarah answered the phone on the third ring.
“Hello?”
James swallowed.
“Hi Sarah, it’s me...James.”
A smile came to her voice.
“Hi, is everything alright?”
He couldn’t stop his voice from wavering as he stared at the jumble of words on the box. Some of them he could read, most of them made little to no sense to him.
“Daniel hurt himself because of me. I wanted to make breakfast for him but the box…I wanted to make pancakes but I can’t…”
Sarah soothed him.
“It’s alright James. I’ll talk you through it, pancakes are very easy.”
He calmed himself.
“Ok.”
She explained to him in great detail what to do as he pulled all the needed ingredients out on to the counter. When he was satisfied that he could complete the task at hand he thanked her.
“James, you know Daniel worries about you. He hurt himself yesterday because he was angry at Antonio and not you, you know that right?”
James was quiet a moment.
“I know it’s just, he does everything for me. I like being close to him and I like sleeping in his bed. I want to do things for him but I don’t know what to do.”
Sarah smiled to herself. The boy was falling for him, but he had no idea how to put that into words.
“Do little things for him. Like breakfast, or laundry or cleaning house. When the tutor comes over, excel at your studies. Be there for him like he is for you James, that’s what people do when they care about someone.”
James smiled as he clicked on the burner on the stove.
“Ok, thank you Sarah.”
Daniel stirred from sleep, a little later than he should have. He could hear what sounded like breakfast being made in the kitchen and smelled pancakes. James had managed to slip away from him as he slept. He got up and pulled on a pair of pants before making his way to the kitchen. James stood at the stove, a pancake rolled and sticking out of his mouth like a cigar. He wore loose fitting basketball shorts that were low on his hips, accentuating his long form. Daniel smiled. The table was already set, butter, milk, syrup, bacon and a plate of pancakes covered the small table top. Daniel wrapped his arms around the boy as he kissed the back of his neck and shoulder. James blushed.
“Good morning.”
Daniel sighed against his skin.
“Yes it is.”
James moved the finished pancake from his pan to a waiting plate and turned off the stove.
“How are your hands?”
Daniel had almost forgotten about them. His right was still sore but his left would be fine in another day or so.
“Fine.”
James made a sound that told Daniel he didn’t believe him as he wriggled out of his embrace. Daniel followed the boy with his eyes as he sat at the far end of the table.
“I hope it’s alright, I’ve never cooked before.”
It looked delicious. Daniel took his seat and piled his plate high.
“For never cooking it looks great.”
James blushed having eaten half of his food already that morning.
“I’m not worried about how it looks.”
Daniel laughed. They ate quietly after that, James watched him intently for any signs of disgust. He showed none. When he was almost finished James stood and went into the bathroom. Grabbing a bottle of Tylenol and setting it next to Daniel’s plate. He smiled.
“Really I’m alright.”
He lifted both his hands and flexed his fingers, managing to make a convincing performance when really he wanted to put his hand on ice. James wouldn’t let up and Daniel ended up taking his pills under James’ watchful eye. James cleared the table and began to wash the dishes when Daniel came up behind him again. His hands roved over his stomach and chest as his warm breath fell against his ear.
“Can I have my vitamin now?”
James shuttered as Daniel’s teeth grazed his skin, his lips parting with a sigh.
“Daniel.”
“Hm?”
“Do I…make you happy?”
Daniel stopped as James waited, staring at the soapy water in the sink.
“Of course, why would you ask that?”
Daniel’s hands turned the boy around to face him as his hips pinned him against the counter, his arms to either side of him, blocking an escape. James was unable to meet his gaze.
“You do a lot for me. You gave up your social life to protect me, even your usual day job has been put on hold because I’m here. You fulfill every want, every need I have. But do I do the same for you?”
Daniel sighed as the doorbell rang. He wondered who would be at his door. Their conversation would have to wait. He looked through the peep hole in the door and his stomach sank.
“Who is it?”
James sat on the far end of the couch, obviously upset that his question has gone unanswered. Daniel opened the door as a gorgeous blonde walked in. She wore a skimpy tank top which seemed to barely contain her bountiful chest. Her waist was slim and her jeans hung low on her hips. Her legs seemed to go on for miles, exaggerated by her three inch red heals she wore. She smiled at Daniel and lightly kissed him on the cheek as she entered.
“Hi Danny! I’m back in town so I thought I’d see how you were doing.”
James wrinkled his nose at her, she was so superficial. Daniel closed the door behind her.
“I thought you were going to be gone for a year.”
She waved away his words and flipped her hair.
“Yes well, the company changed their minds.”
She smiled suggestively at him.
“I thought maybe, we could pick up where we left off Danny.”
Daniel’s gaze flicked to James. The boy was ignoring them, flipping through channels, his shoulders tense.
“Actually I have a roommate now.”
He motioned to James as the woman turned, a look of disappointment in her eyes.
“James this is Anita.”
He didn’t turn.
“Hi.”
Daniel sighed; he was going to be in trouble after this. Anita rounded on him, leaning in a little as if James would be unable to hear if she did.
“I didn’t know you were running a daycare here. Is he a relative?”
James turned his head just enough to glance at Daniel from the corner of his eye, his body unmoving as he waited for a response. Daniel clenched his jaw.
“Actually Anita, he’s my…lover.”
