Chapter 7
Avernion: Yes, shame on you! Thinking Angel could do something like that... And yes, you very much may have a one track mind, but it's alright because it's Damien. You'll find out what he does in this chapter ;)... or at least some of what he does.

The sound of something kin to thunder could barely be heard over the noise that the merman was emitting.
The creature practically began to convulse, it’s ears starting to bleed, and the noise was only getting louder.
A large crack appeared connected to the hole that all the water had escaped, and the creature threw it’s self against that point in the wall, before a large chunk broke off.
It quickly made it’s escape, behind the monitors that had cracked before even the glass of the tank had, the vibrations reaching only as far as the walls of the lab.
The creature was out and in safety by the time the keening stopped, and there were voices and pounding on the other side of the door.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Get this door open!” Hector yelled, the workers hurrying to comply, but the lock system wasn’t working. Something had screwed it up. Most likely something to do with that awful noise, which had stopped only seconds ago.
“Ram it down!” John was screaming, needing to get in and check on Angel, to see what he’d done. Leah was still in there, and they weren’t getting any signs that she was alright.
“It’s opening,” Someone said, and everyone waited with bated breath as the door finally slid open. The scientists told the workers to stay out of the way as they went inside.
The first thing they saw, was the water that covered the water, broken glass and other debris floating in it.
“Leah!” Vic said, running to the body of the woman, almost retching at the sight of half her neck missing. Hector ran over, to check on them, and grimaced at the sight himself.
John stood in the middle of the wreckage, noting all of the damage. Something was off.
“The tank…” Damien came up behind him, eyes wide at the destruction of the tank, large slabs of thick glass covered in glass, fallen on the ground.
“What did he…” John trailed off, thoughts going straight to Angel, knowing at that moment it was the merman who’d done it.
“He’s still under there,” Damien suddenly said, and walked forward.
“I’m going to kill it!” Hector growled, turning around and stalking towards where Damien was heading.
“Don’t,” Damien ordered quietly, before explaining, “It wasn’t him.”
“How the hell do you know?! You didn’t even look at her!” the older man yelled, not believing a word.
“Because, if you weren’t so quick to jump to wrong conclusions, you’d figure out it wasn’t him,” He pointed to the debris near the woman, showing that he, in fact, did look, “Look at that. Don’t you think it’s odd that she’s surrounded by feathers? Last time I checked, Angel didn’t have any.”
‘And the smell is different’ Damien thought, having smelt something revolting before he even walked in, like rotten meat and other things better left unsaid.
Hector, along with Damien, John, and a few other workers that they called in, managed to move some of the glass, before they finally reached the merman underneath. Thankfully, he hadn’t been crushed underneath. Parts of the purple rock had broken off, and held it up, making a sort of niche, keeping him safe.
Damien leaned over him, checking to make sure he wasn’t hurt. It seemed he barely had a scratch, but his breathing was harsh, and getting worse.
The young man was at a loss of what to do, since he didn’t know what was happening, and picked Angel up, planning on moving him out of the room.
The boy shuddered, almost to where Damien dropped his legs, from being so slippery because of the scales, though he managed to keep hold.
And then they saw it. The scales on his legs were starting to recede, and the gills sealed close, looking like the merman had three scars on either side of his neck.
Not long after, Damien was holding a very human like boy, that was very much naked.
“Where are you going?!” John called out, when Damien started walking away.
“Infirmary,” He replied hotly, picking his way around the mess, making sure not to trip so that he wouldn’t drop or harm the unconscious merman.
“What the hell for?” John couldn’t help but retort, following behind. Hector stared at their backs as they walked out of the room, wondering what the hell it was that he just saw, before walking to Vic.
“Come on, little buddy, let’s get going,” Hector shook the smaller man’s shoulder, watching him nod, before walking to the infirmary himself. Leah and Vic had become good friends ever since they’d found the merman, because of the merman, and Hector wanted to give the man some time alone, but they had work to do.
Hector himself was going to look around the room, to see if the think had actually disappeared. He took the tranquilizer, and walked around the parameter of the room once, twice, but he couldn’t find anything, that is, until he looked behind the monitors, noticing a small, bloody hand print on the side of the machine that he hadn’t notice before.
He hurried to get a flashlight, and came back, shining it back there. The space was too narrow for him to fit through, but he could see the large, gaping hole behind it, and cursed.
In truth, he was glad that the monster or whatever it was, wasn’t still in the room, but that meant that it could be anywhere, just lying in wait for it’s next victim. This wasn’t good.
Hector quickly ordered the others to clean up the mess, and looked around for Vic, noticing that he was already gone. He was told by one of the workers that he had gone to the infirmary. The big man quickly went after him.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“What the hell happened to him?!” John yelled, the minute Damien set Angel on one of cots that was in the corner of the infirmary. No one was in there except for them three, the doctor having gone to check the commotion and make sure everyone was alright.
“How the hell should I know? I’m not the fish expert.” Damien said hotly, looking the boy over, and noticed that the boy didn’t look completely human. There was a patch of scales in the indent of his lower back.
“What the hell are we going to do?” John was hysterical, but Damien ignored it, looking out the hallway, and sighting Vic walking towards them slowly, dejectedly.
“What happened?” Damien said, already gesturing to the merman when the small scientist stepped through the door.
Vic sighed, and ran a hair through his greasy hair, and walked over to Angel, and looked him over.
“Well, naiads and Selkies, cousins of the mermaid, have lore that say they can turn into a human form, right? So why can’t a merman himself?” Vic answered after a minute, feeling sick after see what had happened to his friend earlier.
“But why?” John asked, calming down just enough to listen.
“You see his gills? They’re closed. He’s part fish, and he needs water. It’s probably for survival.” Vic’s explanation seemed possible, and so they left it at that, for now. It didn’t look like the man would take much more questions. In a fit of sympathy, John put his hand on Vic’s shoulder.
“Why don’t you go check on Mrs. Barlows and Kevin?” He asked kindly, to get him out of the room and away from the merman. Vic knew what he was doing, and was silently grateful. He quickly left the room afterwards.
“You should go check on the others,” Damien told the elder scientist, who looked at him sharply. “I’ll look after him, until everything settles down, just a bit.”
“And what if something like earlier happens again, and the creature comes back?” John asked with a sneer.
“If it did, you wouldn’t be able to put up much of a fight, anyway.” Damien didn’t take the bait, and after a few moments, John finally left, leaving him and the merman alone.
“What the hell are you thinking?” Damien asked, getting no answer yet again.
