“Mam?” The sharp rap of glass against the metallic edge of the patrolman’s flashlight, coupled with the shock of a voice outside of her imagination intruding on her thoughts, had Penny jerking violently in her seat. So violently in fact that her body pushed into the front of her steering wheel and had the horn blaring a warning.

The cop cursed and jumped back, dropping his flashlight in the process. This precipitated more cursing, and Penny believed that he would have bent down to retrieve the wretched thing had he not been afraid for the state of her mental stability.

“Mam?” the question was a bit more impatient now, a bit less polite.

Catching her breath, Penny pressed still shaking fingers against the automatic control for the windows. The glass slid down slowly, a burst of fresh air sending a shiver of pleasure through her body as her flushed face cooled.

“Yes officer. What seems to be the problem?”

The man, the officer, frowned down at her, handsome face clouding with a mixture of confusion and anger.

“Someone driving by saw you passed out in the front seat and they called it in. Are you alright mam?”

Penny’s eyes ran over the cops face. Judjing...searching. She wasn’t sure what, but she knew he had something she needed.

Or maybe she was being overdramatic and she just wanted his gun.

Penny sent him a smile that she had been honing since she was very young. A smile that said, ‘yes I’m ok.’ when she was anything but.

“I’m fine officer, I’m sorry for causing all the trouble. I was just a bit tired. I just drove into town today after being on the road all night.”

The officer, a man whose name tag dubbed him “Brian” frowned down at her even harder and Penny flushed accordingly. It wasn’t that the story wasn’t believable. It was just that she heard how idiotic it sounded.

Which was ridiculous because whether it sounded believable or not was beside the point as long as it kept her from being investigated after she had just got into the city, which would completely ruin the point of being in protective custody. Penny was tired of moving, she was tired of running for her life each and every time the Joker found her.

And if she were tired of it, then she knew that the Feds were sick of chasing a man who they had been after for the last eleven years. Man searches were expensive and usually the Joker would be put on the back burner for more immediate cases, but he just kept causing trouble. Dangerous trouble. So what were they to do but to look for him out of view of the public eye. The Joker had made himself a well known secret and Penny was the key to him.

“…type of thing is dangerous. I should give you a ticket for it but I’ll let you slide on it this time as long as it doesn’t happen again. Understand.”

She smiled, however this time it didn’t come as easily as it had last time. It hurt actually.

“Will do officer. Thank you.”

“You have a good day now. And get to a hotel so you can get some sleep. I can’t have you falling asleep in the middle of traffic.”

“Yes sir.”

After he’d gone, Penny let out a slow, measured sigh of relief. Rolling back up her window she took the car out of park and pulled forward. It was only then as she passed by the patrol car parked not far ahead of her on the side of the road, that she actually heard the impatient horns blaring behind her.

“Shit.” So much for not causing a fuss. Small town like this, local cops would remember a woman who fell asleep in the middle of traffic.
