chapter 7
I want to thank chemical angel and 7years for the reviews. I actually hadn't even noticed the lack of details in the characters and the story itself and I'm going to apologize now because you probably wont really see an improvement for a few chapters but I will definitely work on fixing that.
Monday morning
“GOOD MORNING LADIES!”
A clown. A fucking clown had woken Josie up. When Josie was only 7 her brother let her watch this “really great” movie about a clown… To this day Josie wouldn’t watch a Stephen King movie or read any of his books. And she’d been afraid of clowns ever since. Once she woke up enough to realize the clown wasn’t going to kill her and it was only an R.A. trying to wake her up she crawled out of bed and took a shower. She got dressed, put on her make up and made her bed. After, Josie went outside, smoked a cigarette, ignored Brian and went to the cafeteria to get a cup of coffee.
Every Monday morning at 8AM was a weekly assembly, in the gym. Josie and all the other students were seated on the bleachers. Josie had found a clear spot almost directly in the middle. She sat down and waited while everyone else came in. Brian came in and sat behind her. He’d kept trying to get her attention for the past few days but she’d just gone on ignoring him.
“HEY NICK! SAVED YOU A SEAT!” Brian yelled from behind her when Nick walked in. She wanted to hit him. Nick climbed up and sat behind her, next to Brian and Jay, Chris and Jackie joined them when they came in. Jackie sat next to Josie while the boys all sat behind them. The assembly started with the center director talking about random things. Josie felt a tug on her hair and whipped around to see four innocent smiles. She grumbled and turned back around. Mr. K had the floor now and was listing terminations for the last week. Someone traced a line down Josie’s spine, giving her the chills. She reached behind her and hit the first body part she came into contact with.
“DAMNIT JOSIE THAT WAS MY PACKAGE!” Chris exclaimed
“Miss Reynolds, Mr. Johnson, I’d like to see you both after the assembly.” Mr. K said, picking up right where he’d left off. Josie sat and fumed the rest of the assembly. At the end when everyone was leaving Josie had her hair pulled again, but Brian, Nick and Jay were moving so she didn’t know who it could be. After everyone cleared out Josie and Chris climbed back down the bleachers and went to talk to Mr. K.
“No Halloween costume, Mr. K?“ Josie asked.
“You guys want to tell me whats going on?” Mr. K asked, getting right to the point.
“Josie whacked my package.” Chris said.
“He pulled my hair.” Josie said, not wanting to look like the bad guy.
“I didn’t.” Chris said.
“Who?” Josie asked.
“I was sworn to secrecy.” Chris said.
“It’s Nick right?” Josie asked.
“I can’t tell you, but I’ll tell you it isn’t me.”
“You both seem to be punishing each other, but I can’t just look the other way on this. Josie, you can empty the ash trays again,” he winked “and Mr. Johnson, you can sweep the rec tonight.”
“What am I getting punished for?” Chris exclaimed.
“Withholding information.” Mr. K said.
“What?! That’s not fair!”
“No, but I was only kidding, You nearly screamed ‘damnit’ during an assembly, I’m punishing you for the language. Now get to class.”
During lunch Josie had an apple and did a couple laps around the campus like she’d been doing for a few days now. She stopped at every designated smoking area to pick butts up off the ground though. She felt like she owed Mr. K since she’d cheated the last time. She emptied the ashtrays too. By four that afternoon Josie had her little bag full of butts. She brought it to Mr. K’s office but he wasn’t in. She put the bag on his desk and grabbed a post it note and wrote ‘To Mr. K, From Josie Reynolds’ and stuck it on top of the bag. Josie went outside and went up to the smoking area on the hill.
“JOSIE!” someone yelled
“JOE!” Josie yelled back
“JOE Z!” Joe yelled.
“JOE C!” Josie corrected.
“COME FOR A WALK WITH ME PEANUT!”
“OKAY, BUT, UH, PEANUT?”
“YEA CAUSE YOU A HEALTH NUT! MISS I’m-GONNA-LOSE-20-POUNDS-AND-QUIT-SMOKING!” Josie laughed as she caught up to Joe and started walking. “Got five?”
“No. Brian right?”
“Nope, just me and you.” she gave him a five and they went to the bus stop. Joe lit the blunt and took a few hits. “Whats going on with you and Brian?” Joe asked after a few minutes of silence. Josie grabbed the blunt and took a hit.
“Brian is an asshole.” she said, trying to come up with a good reason. She took another hit, let it out and said “He makes me feel inferior.”
“Brian does that to everyone. Don’t let it bother you.”
“I’m not, I’m ignoring him.”
“Yea I noticed that he’s invisible to you now.” he said, taking the blunt back.
“Don’t look at me like I’m the bad guy, I tried being friends with him. I just couldn’t. I always felt like he was talking down to me, and the eating disorder thing, and the fight with Jerome, it was horrible. I will not associate with him anymore, he IS invisible to me.”
“All right.” Joe said, handing her the rest of the blunt and walking up towards the dorms. Josie finished smoking it, threw the roach and went up the hill to the other smoking area. There was a few people on the curb, no one was on either or the benches. Josie went to the one on the far right, to the left and directly across from the other bench was Brian’s bench. That’s why Josie only ever sat at this one now, since Brian would only ever sit on the other one. Of course as she was acknowledging this in her head Brian sat down beside her.
“Can we maybe stop playing this ‘game’ for five minutes?” he asked. Josie just glared at him. “There’s an improvement. An hour ago you wouldn’t even have looked at me. But check it out Josie, no one out here even gives a shit about what we’re doing so just talk to me for five minutes. Everyone can keep on thinking you hate me.”
“Five minutes.”
“It was brought to my attention the other day that you were talking to Jerome.”
“Um, it never really got to that kind of talking. He came up to me the other night and told me that you told him I was a virgin. I was embarrassed, uncomfortable, and there he was saying ‘I won’t tell, then there’ll be competition’ and Nick was coming out of the rec and watching him draw seemed like a good excuse to end the conversation.”
“And from there you were forced to go to the old dorms and what happened out there anyways?”
“I am not telling you that.”
“Did he touch you?”
“Brian-”
“Just answer me.”
“Yes there was touching involved.” she admitted, feeling like a little kid.
“And you two kissed.” he said.
“He kissed me.”
“You didn’t kiss him back?” he asked incredulously.
“Its not what you fucking think Brian so stop it. I had to go to the old dorms and we went around a corner and I looked in the window and when I saw nothing and said I was going back to the dorms he grabbed me and kissed me.”
“How do I know you were really unwilling? For all I know you could have been over there begging him to fuck you.” Josie almost lost it. She took a deep breath, and another.
“Out of time.” Josie said calmly. “But next time you see Nick, ask him to show you his tongue.” She got up and went to dinner. She got a piece of meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. Josie ate it all and once again thought it was because she was high. She was about to stand when a brownie was shoved in front of her. She looked up to see who’d given it to her.
“From Mr. K to you.” he said, and walked away. Josie giggled and ate the brownie.
