Ch. 6

Taking that First Step

While Calista contemplating on her sister, Ariana was off to her theatre class. She couldn’t wait to show her work to her drama friends. What made this drama class unique was that it was a combination class of acting, directing, playwriting, and designing. If it was a musical, they even included the music classes at times.

“I am here guys! You’re going to love this piece!” shouted Ariana as she came into the auditorium.

She nearly gapped when she saw who was there though, Jacob Gillespie.

What was he doing here?, she thought.

“Aw, Ari nice to see you. This here is Jacob Gillespie. He’s going to be helping creating the stage props and setting cause he’s an architect major.” replied one of the teachers, Professor Glenn Carlson, who was a middle age man with a sense of humor.

He always insisted his students call him by his first name. He was a bit short at only 5’9”, and he had shiny hazel eyes and thinning sandy blonde hair.

“We’ve already met Glenn. She’s in my first class. It’s nice to see you again Ariana.” Jacob grinned before taking Ariana’s hand and kissing it.

Ariana blushed red right then and there. Several of the others students there giggled, including Francine, who was there when Ariana arrived.

“Stop it Jacob, you’re embarrassing her.” ordered Francine as she came up.

“I didn’t mean to though.” said Jacob sincerely as he dropped Ari’s hand.

“It’s okay. I’ll be all right.” stuttered Ariana.

Jacob would have commented on that, but soon more students arrived and the class started. It started without a hitch and after the teachers got done with the syllabus and roll, they started talking about their first big project that be coming up, the Autumn Fair. It was one of those tourist attractions that brought people from all over New England there. The students of this class always did the play that occurred there. It was the highlight of the fair because the plays were always originals. Before the summer break, they all decided on who’s play to do, and one of Ariana’s came out as the winner. Ariana couldn’t believe it. Her play was based on a dream she had. Even the smallest thing gave
her inspiration. It was about a young lady who was learning magic, but could never get it right. She finally met a blind man who was a great sorcerer, but lost his ambition when he lost his sight. Together they both learn the meaning of hope and love and heal each other’s wounds.

“I’ve written the whole play. Now we can start figuring out who’s who.” Ariana said.

“What’s this play called again Ari?” asked Francine.

“Oh, it’s called Believe.”

“I so love the plot of your play Ari! It’s so romantic!” exclaimed a cinnamon hair-colored girl named Sandie, who was a total romantic.

She was also considered one of the best actresses.

“Hehe, thanks Sandie.”

“What’s the story about?” asked Jacob.

Ariana explained the plot to him.

“That sounds good. Do you believe in magic Ariana?” asked Jacob.

“Uh well, I believe anything is possible. Do you?”

“Ha ha, all Irish believe in magic. We’re a romantic and free-spirited folk.”

Ariana loved hearing his voice. She was a sucker for foreign accents. Both Ariana and Jacob were still looking at each other when Francine said something.

“Are you two just going to stare at each other like a couple of turtle doves?” she asked teasingly.

That caused both of them to blush, making everyone in the room laugh.

“All right now, that’s enough. We have to get to work here.” commented Professor Carlson.

The next few days went good for Ariana. They were able to cast people in her play and already costumes were being made. They only had ‘til the end of October to get everything together. Ariana thought they were doing great progress. It was finally the weekend before Ariana knew it and she was once again hiking. She wasn’t even aware she had company when she heard someone from behind.

“Hey!” waved someone when Ariana turned around.

It was Jacob. By the time he got up to her, he was trying to catch his breath.

“You okay?” Ariana asked.

“Oh aye, I just don’t like running.” laughed Jacob as he winked at her.

Ariana noticed that he was in similar wear as she was, only it was male clothing.

“You like to hike Jacob?”

“Aye, I try to do it everyday, but I tend to be lazy at times. Mind if I join you?”

“I don’t mind.”

As they walked along Jacob kept looking at Ariana. She had a nice pair of legs on her. He never saw them before cause she either wore a long skirt or pants. It was warm enough for her to wear shorts. He was really beginning to like Ariana, and not just because of her appearance. She was probably the sweetest person he ever met. Jacob was being careful though cause even though he was attracted to her, he didn’t want to scare her off either. Still he was itching to ask her out. By watching her at school and by talking to a few of her friends, he discovered she was into the dating scene that much. Jacob was still trying to think of a way to ask her out when Ariana asked him something.

“Hey, you want me to show you my favorite spot? You can see all of Brensdale from it.” she said.

“Sure. I’d love too.” he smiled.

Ariana sighed with relief.

“Okay follow me and see if you can keep up. The way will be rough.” she laughed.

And she wasn’t kidding either, thought Jacob as they climbed up some boulders and hills. But at least he got a good view of her backside. Soon they made it up to the top.

“It’s really lovely up here isn’t it?” Ariana asked.

“Very. I am honored that you would allow me to see this. Ariana?”

“Yes?”

“Are you doing anything tomorrow evening?”

“Not that I can recall. Why?”

“Would you like to got to eat with me?”

“On a date?” Ariana could feel her face heating up.

“Aye, if that’s okay with you. I won’t force you to do anything to do that you don’t want to do.”

Ariana looked at Jacob. She never dated in her life. But then again, she never felt so drawn to another person. And she was always a curious soul.

“All right. What time?”

It was Jacob’s turn to sigh in relief.

“How about 6:00 pm? I hear they have a good place to eat here called Sanders’s Barbeque.”

“Yes it is good. It’s also the only restaurant in town too. It’s named after the owners of the place. In fact, my eldest brother graduated with the owners so they’re good friends. I will admit I use to have crushes on them both, but they grew to be more like brothers to me.”

“Ha ha, it really is a small town. Shall we head back?”

“Okay!”

Calista watched the two of them from her house using her crystal ball. She only used it when she felt the need to. They looked so right together, she thought. She would do whatever it was within her power to see both of them happy. But there were complications. Even now, Calista could sense the same evil force that hunt them down. It would be coming soon, and Ariana had to be ready for it. Calista was expecting a lot from her baby sister. It wasn’t fair. They didn’t ask for their powers, but it happened anyway. Fate loved playing it’s game with them.

“We’ll be ready. We have to be.” Calista said as she looked at Ariana and Jacob for the last time.
