Facing your fears

“Okay, I think we should ask Liz for her opinion” Lucy said, sighing as she put down the drapery swatches.

“Babe, I really don’t care about curtains. Be both know this is your thing so you should be designing the apartment, not me. I don’t understand why we have to do everything together. I’m the one who found the place so now you can make it beautiful” Robert said, bending to kiss her as he picked up the newspaper and headed for the living room.

“But, I want to do this with you. What if you don’t like the color of the furniture or the wallpaper, what if..” but Robert cut her off before she could finish.

“Lucy, if I get involved in this I think I will literally pull my hair out. Babe, this is what you do, so do it. Seriously, honey, I know you’ll do a good job and I trust you. Drapery color and material is not really my thing. I think it's better if you just do this with Lucy” Robert said, sitting on the couch and taking a sip of his coffee before opening the paper to the sports section.

“Fine. Be that way. You know, if you didn’t want to move in with me, I would understand. You should just tell me” Lucy pouted, before turning around and stomping back to their room slamming the door.

Robert sighed as he stared at the now closed door. HE didn’t understand how Lucy didn’t already know that moving in with her was exactly what he wanted. Didn’t he find the apartment they would both live in? Didn’t he practically beg the tenant in the same building as Lucy’s to move three months earlier so she would be closer to her best friend? Wasn’t he the one moving here to be with her in the first place? Women were too complicated, he decided. Maybe Lucy was just a little too complicated for him.

“I’d go with the burgundy color in crude silk if I were you. I believe, that’s what Lucy would pick too” Liz said, as she exited her room heading for the front door.

“How did you know that?” Robert asked, staring at her with wide eyes.

“Hehe, I know Lucy. That one was easy, she’s been my best friend since forever. Sometimes I know stuff about Lucy she doesn’t even realize for herself. The same goes both ways obviously, if you haven’t noticed.” Liz smiled at Robert as she buttoned up her jacket and pulled on her mittens.

“Well then maybe you can give me some insight on what’s wrong with us lately.” Robert said, sighing as he put down his mug.

Liz looked at Robert. She could see he really was trying but lately she noticed that they were fighting a lot as well. She did know why they wer fighting, well, actually why Lucy kept picking fights, but she wasn’t sure it was her place to say. ‘Oh what the hell, Lucy always sticks her nose in my business, maybe it’s time I stick my nose in hers’ she thought.

“She loves you” Liz said.

“She loves me?” Robert looked at her, confused by what Liz just said.

“Yep, she loves you. That’s it. It scares the hell out of her and she thinks you might not love her as much as she loves you.” Liz opened the front door ready to head out.

“Wait, what do you mean? I’ve uprooted my whole life for her, she knows I love her” Robert said, getting up off the couch, "ans if she loves me, why doesn't she just tell me?"

“Well ,...have you ever told her?” Liz simply smiled and closed the door behind her as she left the apartment.

Robert, taken aback by Liz’s simple question realized he hadn’t. Well he knew he hadn’t. Even though he had been in love with Lucy for some time and had wan't to tell her, it wasn’t that simple. Lucy had never told him she loved him either. He didn’t want to get hurt. Okay, so maybe he made it seem like it wasn’t that big a deal for him to move here for her and if anything it was a good move, career-wise. Maybe, he had held back a lot of his feelings because he didn’t want to get hurt, but Lucy had done the same. This wasn’t all his fault.

He heard the front door unlock as Liz came running back into her apartment.

“Hey, sorry, I forgot my wallet.” She quickly looked around and saw it sitting on the kitchen counter.

Heading back out the door, she turned to look at Robert.

“One last thing; It might seem obvious to you that your actions should speak louder than your words, but don’t forget- Lucy is a girl. All girls need to hear they are loved once and awhile, especially from their significant others. It doesn’t help Lucy is who she is either.” Liz smiled at herself.

“I should probably be giving Lucy the same advice when it comes to you, but I think between the two, you are the more level headed one and might actually listen to me.” They both smiled at that. “As much as she comes off as this confident, self-assured women, she had doubts about your feelings for her as much as you do. Maybe it’s about time one you bit the bullet and came clean about how you feel about each other already.”

With that Lucy left the apartment. Seeing the look on Robert’s face as she left, she knew she had done the right thing. She would bet Robert had headed straight into that bedroom and told Lucy how he felt.

Headed for the library so she could do a little bit of studying before her date that night she thought about the couple. Why is it both of them refuse to acknowledge what is right in front of them? What is so scary about love anyway? Maybe, one day, she would find out. Not looking where she was headed, she smacked right into a tall man with broad shoulders. Dropping all her books on the floor she rushed to pick them up before they got to wet. The man bent to help her retrieving the ones that had fallen the farthest from her reach.

“I’m so sorry,” she rushed, “I wasn’t looking where I was going.” Looking up she noticed it was the guy she had been gawking at from across the street the other day.

This time, he had on a black leather jacket with a red plain fitted t-shirt underneath. He had jeans on, ripped at the knees and had on black running shoes. She liked his style, sort of laid back and cool.

Blushing, he handed her the books he had picked up and she noticed him trying to place her.

“Not a problem, maam. I should have been watching where I was heading myself” Matt said, smiling at the pretty girl in front of him.

“Please, excuse me,” Liz said softly as she accepted her books back from him.

He knew he had seen her before but he couldn’t remember where. He had noticed her walking towards him right before she ran into him but he had been so mesmerized by her, he didn’t move out of her way in time. Her shy faint smile and captivating eyes suddenly struck him, he couldn’t stop staring at her. She had the most beautiful, almond shaped, green eyes in the world, he thought. They were almost emerald except for the edges which darkened to an almost forest green. Her thick black lashes batted slightly, making her seem shy and almost afraid to be around him. He realized he couldn’t stop staring at her. ‘Oh, I must be making her uncomfortable’ he thought, as he watched her shift consciously under his gaze.

“I’m really sorry, my name is Matt. I work right over there across the street” he said, Mentally kicking himself for his lack of originality.

“Yes, I know” She said, and courageously she fought the urge to run and simply smiled back kindly, then turned to walk to the library. ‘Lucy would be so proud of me’ she thought, ‘I can’t believe I didn’t just die of embarrasement.’

Matt watched her walk away, wishing he could get the sawdust feeling out of his mouth so he could ask her for her name.
