Hope is the thing with feathers
As you may have noticed, i am back. for a while anyway. and i plan to update all of my stories eventually. please review, it makes me want to write more.
Slinki you make me smile. thanks for the reviews.
Mai relaxed quickly and her mind began to drift away to her old life. The bitter scent reminded her of her mother’s medics. They always had a certain scent to them, as if the aroma had sunk into their clothes and skin and refused to be washed out. Her mother’s sweet smile, her brothers’ faces, her father, standing tall and straight in the throne room, so many images flashed through her head.
Burning tears tracked down her face. She sniffled and then brought herself forcibly back into the present.
“Why are you helping me?” she asked carefully. His hands and the ointment were slowly making the pain go away.
Altec heard her and considered her question. He had wanted her since she arrived, and it made him cringe to see Iris abuse her so. He knew she would respond better to a soft touch, gentle caresses, a soothing voice. It almost became a challenge. He knew he could do it; but he had to endure watching these idiots handle her. He was helping her because he wanted her, but it probably wouldn’t do to simply tell her this. No, he wanted her to trust him, look to him for everything.
“We both are prisoners here, we must stick together if there is any hope for escape.”
Mai sat up suddenly under him and unseated him. He caught himself on the bed as she turned towards him, a look of joy and surprise on her face.
“You mean, we are going to escape? Really?”
Looking back, it was probably a bad idea to mention escape. He had toyed with the idea, but overall life here wasn’t horrible. But it was slavery. Maybe he should look into those plans a bit more. With her help it may be possible.
“Of course, my love. We will fly from here, one day.” He turned his face away, and in the darkness he rolled his eyes. He sounded cheesy. She wouldn’t believe him. He sounded like those cheap love poems.
Mai, for her part, though, was besotted. If she could escape, return to her home. Maybe she had been wrong. Surely not all of her brothers were dead. Colin could be hiding out in the forest, waiting for her, looking for her. She could flee here, and this man, Altec, would help her. Such a good soul. In this place, without any hope, he had given her something to dream about, a single thought of hope.
She blindly clung to that thought, letting her fears drift away.
Altec noticed a dizzy smile wash over her features and knew he had her hooked. They were laying side by side facing one another and he reached around to pull her closer to him.
