His First: Chapter 7: Later…
Brendan waved to his Mom as she drove away from Anne’s house. His wallet chain jangled against his hip as he strode up the sidewalk mimicking his jangling nerves. He had decided silence was golden and that he wouldn’t tell Michael yet. Best to wait until they were two old coots in a nursing home both confined to wheelchairs.
“Hey there hot stuff!” Anne’s voice squeaked from the doorway.
Brendan walked right up into the short pudgy girl’s open arms. “Happy Birthday” she whispered in his ear as she squeezed him. Suddenly it hit Brendan; maybe he could talk to Anne? She and Michael had been dating since forever and Brendan had come to think of her as just an extension of his best friend. “Thanks,” he mumbled passing from her arms into the house considering this new intriguing possibility. He could hear Michael’s loud voice in the next room over the growing den of the party. He was grateful other people were already there. Anne cringed beside him. “Do you hear that? He makes it sound like this is his party…” she moaned.
“I thought it was mine?” Brendan dryly responded giving her his best hurt puppy look.
“Hey it’s my parents who are gone. I’m taking the risks. I want my damn social deviant credit!” She pouted stomping into the large living room to her boyfriend.
“Hey sweetie,” Michael said as he kissed her forehead, then seeing Brendan shouted out “Ah, dude, happy birthday Bren!” Michael pulled Brendan in for fierce hug. “Great party, huh?” The doorbell chimed and Anne happily skipped out to get it.
Brendan stood with Michael and a few other partiers who all wished him a happy birthday in turn. He felt awkward when Michael asked if he got anything good for his birthday. Brendan had indeed gotten something good on his birthday. He smiled and wondered where the hell Anne had got to. The situation began to weight heavily on his mind. Should he pull the boy aside and talk to him? As Brendan brooded over his indecision he circulated further and further away from his best friend until he was on the edge of the party leaning against a wall lost in thought.
About an hour later when the house was packed with people Brendan felt a tug at his shirt. Anne’s soft brown eyes peered up at him.
“You ok?’ she asked as she lightly rubbed his back. “I’m used to you being Mr. Pensive but you’ve hardly said a word all night to anyone.”
Ok he needed to talk to her. Brendan looked around and found Michael deeply involved in a play station battle with a couple others teens. He turned towards Anne and softly asked, “Anne…how do you think Michael would react if …um….. * something * …um… if… a ….Colin ….and I…. ummm…sorta slept together….?” Brendan’s voice trailed as Anne’s eyes grew wider and wider. Suddenly he was being shoved up the stairs past the ‘do not cross this line’ sign and into the girl’s bedroom.
SLAM!
“ARE YOU SHITTING ME?” she exclaimed locking the door behind her.
Brendan shook his head no and sprawled face down across her bed.
“When?!” she demanded climbing up beside him, looking at him in disbelief.
“Last night.” Brendan mumbled sheepishly.
Anne stuttered a moment before getting out a ‘why’ and a ‘how’ and something that sounded like a ‘gunh?’
Brendan covered his face and moaned into his hands, “I don’t know!” He rubbed at his face before turning to his side to looked up at her. This was not going well. “I think I’ve screwed everything up!” he bawled in despair.
Anne reached over to touch Brendan. Her shocked eyes shifted into gentile tenderness.
“No,” she protested. “It’s ok, it’s just that…Wow, Brendan,” she said in awe and wonderment scooting closer to him. “I didn’t think, you know, you were into doing that yet….I mean you’ve never even had a boy friend…”
Brendan was silent. It was true. Since he came out he hadn’t found anyone he liked enough for even one date. Maybe he was just waiting around for Colin.
Anne suddenly asked, “Are you ok? He didn’t hurt you did he?”
“NO!” Brendan immediately replied. “Colin would never be like that….”
“Sorry, but he’s kinda a player and you were just so quiet…. You look, upset so I thought maybe….” the girl’s genuine concern covered her face.
“I’m fine,” said pushing himself to sit up. “I just don’t know what to tell Michael.”
Ann seamed to consider this and then asked, “Well, was this a one time deal or are you two, you know, ‘together’ now?”
Brendan hung his head down in defeat, “That’s another thing I don’t know. It’s not like we planned it. Just sort a happened….” But he did want to be with Colin and that made him feel guilt in regards to Michael and anxious in regards to Colin. What was he to do?
Brendan looked up when Anne cleared her throat.
“Sooo…” she started quietly, “was it good?” her delicate eyebrows raised curiously on her face as she bit her bottom lip waiting for his response.
Brendan blushed and hid his face. The seriousness of the moment disappeared with that one dubious question. He grinned back at Anne’s impetuous expression. “Really good. Really, really, really, really…. good.”
Anne squealed and plowed him over onto the bed again.
“TELLMETELLMETELLME! What was he like?” she giggled batting at him with her hands.
“Anne!” Brendan groaned, “Boys don’t talk about this stuff, at least not like this.”
“The hell they don’t! I want details mister or at least vague references that will make my knees go all wonkie!”
“God woman!” he groaned laying back beside her staring at the ceiling. He was surprised at how much he did want to talk to her about it like two silly girls, but there was just too much to tell her. “He was sweet. He was patient. He was gentle…. smooth…… and hot all at the same time,” Brendan’s voice became soft and wistful, “…. everything you hope for, for your first time.”
Anne sighed heavily. She leaned over and kissed Brendan’s cheek. “Then stop worrying about Michael and be happy.”
The doorknob rattled followed by some rapid pounding. “Anne, Bren? You guys in there?”
Anne huffed and rolled off the bed to go answer the door.
“What are you guys doing?” Michael asked peering in as the door was opened.
Brendan answered, “Just some girl talk, you know, hair, make up, orgasms, comparing boyfriends’ lengths…’
“Or lack there of…” Anne teased.
“What. Ever,” Michael rolled his eyes at his girl friend. “Just come back down. The beer’s here.”
Anne squeaked and turned her back to her boy friend as she exclaimed to Brendan, “ Did you hear that Bren? COLIN’S here with the BEER!?!?” She exclaimed her eyes big and dancing at Brenan with evil intent.
“Hell ya! What’s an underaged party with no parents if you ain’t got someone to get you booze, right?” He smiled thinking Anne and Brendan’s excitement was, like his, over the beer.
Brendan felt his world slowly caving in around him. Of course! Michael would never through a party without asking his over 21 brother to drop in with something. Brendan felt his face going red. Colin said ‘I’ll see you later’ when he left this morning. Fuck, I am so stupid… ARGH!
“We’ll be right down!” Anne cheered closing Michael out of the room again.
“Shit, Anne! I didn’t expect, I mean, how am I supposed to act with both of them here? Fuck fuck fuck…” his stomach heaved. How could he keep this secret from Michael if Colin was going to be there kissing him? Ok that assumed that Colin was going to kiss him, which prompted another heave of his stomach.
“You worry about Colin,” Anne instructed, frantically preening Brendan’s hair, “and I will take care of Michael, ok?” She quickly grabbed a dark lipstick and drew it across the boy’s bottom lip. “Now,” she paused dramatically, “ let us breath…”
Brendan nodded and took a deep breath. Everything was going to fine, just fine…if only his legs would move.
