The Kindness of Strangers
Chapter Seven: The Kindness of Strangers
The wood-carver slowly got up and glared at the man who was pressing the sword at his neck.
\"Hands behind your head. Both of you,\" said the stranger.
The wood-carver and the leathersmith complied.
\"How dare you interfere in our affairs!\" snapped the wood-carver. \"This does not concern any of you!\"
\"Oh, but it does,\" said the stranger. His hair was raven black and he wore fancy garments in purple and black.
\"We have been on the trail of your friend the leathersmith, and we have finally tracked him down. He owes me a large sum of money that he lost in a game of cards six months ago.\"
He turned to the leathersmith and spoke to him.
\"Did you really think we would not find you, leathersmith?\"
\"Sir Martin, I cannot pay you what I do not have,\" said the leathersmith. \"My pockets are empty.\"
\"That is a shame,\" said the stranger. \"We shall have to shatter your legs.\"
\"Wait!\" cried the leathersmith. \"Would you accept something else in lieu of payment?\"
\"Such as?\"
\"The girl! Take the girl and do with her as you please!\"
The wood-carver glared at the leathersmith.
\"She is not completely yours to offer!\" said the wood-carver to his friend. \"And I thought you gave up gambling!\"
\"Please, my dear fellow,\" pleaded the leathersmith. \"Let me give the girl to Sir Martin. We can always find another!\"
\"Leathersmith, why on earth would I accept this girl in lieu of the money you owe me?\" asked Sir Martin as he looked at the frightened cinder girl.
\"Please, Sir Martin, do not be deceived by her tattered clothing. Beneath those rags is a body most beautiful. And, as my friend here and I can both assure you, she is a great fuck.\"
The cinder girl sat on the ground and looked at the five male strangers. Would she now be turned over to the leader of these men to be used as she had been used by the wood-carver and the leathersmith?
Sir Martin threw back his handsome head and gave a hearty laugh. His four friends also laughed, but they kept their swords aimed at the wood-carver and the leathersmith.
When Sir Martin finished laughing he walked over and put his arm around the leathersmith\'s shoulder.
\"Leathersmith, if I had been willing to accept a great shag in lieu of money to pay off your gambling debt, I would have taken it out of your very own precious arse.\"
The leathersmith and the wood-carver stared at Sir Martin.
\"You mean that you are --\" the leathersmith began to say.
\"My men and I are the gayest group of adventurers to sail the seas,\" said Sir Martin. \"You did not know? Leathersmith, you played many a card game with us for over a fortnight. Are we not the dandiest of fops? The most fashion-conscious of peacocks?\"
The leathersmith slowly nodded. Of course, he thought. Why did he not ever realize that? Sir Martin and his four companions always dressed in the finest and fanciest of garments. They always were immaculately groomed and smelled fresh and clean with the just the hint of delightful fragrances. Yet they were excellent swordsmen. The leathersmith had witnessed them on at least two occasions when they were sparring.
\"Does this mean that the girl is of no interest to you?\" asked the leathersmith. He feared for his well-being. Sir Martin and his men no doubt would break his legs.
Sir Martin surprised the leathersmith by saying, \"Only as a damsel in distress, as she obviously is. You do not own this girl. And from her screams that we heard, she was not a willing participant in your activity here in these woods. We will shatter your legs. Then we will take the girl and safely escort her to wherever she wishes to go.\"
He turned to the wood-carver and said, \"Try to stop us and I will run my sword through your wicked heart.\"
Just then a group of knights on horseback came riding up.
\"Stop right there! All of you!\" shouted one of the knights. \"Are you the wood-carver and the leathersmith?\"
\"Yes, we are,\" said the leathersmith, thankful of this interruption in the shattering of his legs.
\"Who are you?\" asked the wood-carver.
\"We are the King\'s Guardsmen. Special Victims Unit. You are both under arrest. The charge is the brutal rape of various young and beautiful women throughout the kingdom. The King takes very seriously his duty in protecting his subjects. You are both to be taken into custody and brought before the King. He will deal with you accordingly.\"
The cinder girl could not believe her ears. Her assailants would no longer be able to hurt her!
\"Sir Martin,\" said the knight. \"It is good to see you.\"
Sir Martin greeted the knight in return. He explained to the knights that the cinder girl was the latest victim of the wood-carver and the leathersmith.
They safely escorted the cinder girl to the Royal Physician for treatment of her injuries.
After listening to what the cinder girl had to say and to what her two assailants had to say, the King put out an arrest warrant for her stepmother and two stepsisters. They were charged with rape and put in prison, as were the wood-carver and the leathersmith.
Epilogue:
The cinder girl was befriended by the group of kind sea adventurers: Sir Martin, Sir Jay, Lord Drake, Lord Oriole and Lord Finch. They gave her a tour of their fine sailing ship, the Nightingale. From their travels they learned of where to buy the finest clothing. They took great delight in bestowing the cinder girl with beautiful gowns, jewelry and footwear.
\"Shoes made of glass?\" asked the cinder girl one day when Sir Martin slipped them onto her feet.
\"It\'s you. It\'s really you,\" assured Sir Martin. \"Now let us escort you to the Royal Ball where the Prince will be looking for his bride-to-be.\"
\"You are the best friends a girl could ever have,\" said the cinder girl.
