Crimson Snow

“Hey Crystal! Who are
you going with for the dance before winter break?”

“No one unless he wakes up.”

“Oh come on! You have
to go with somebody!”

“Claire, I’m not going with anyone else other than the guy
I’ve got.”

“And who have you got?” Asked Claire, hands on her hips.

“Kyle Isamashii.”

“Who?”

“Kyle Isamashii,” repeated Crystal, “the kid from math
class.”

“You’re going out with him?! Crystal! How could
you?! He’s a loser!style="mso-spacerun: yes"> You can do better than him!style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Besides, he hasn’t been to school in, like,
six months!”

Crystal’s anger rose, “He’s not a loser!style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He’s the best man a girl could have!style="mso-spacerun: yes"> And for your information, he’s in a coma
right now!”

Claire took a step back and let Crystal pass as she stormed
off to her next class.

The rest of the day seemed to just fly by.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It seemed that the steam she had let off
this morning was just pushing her down the River of Life.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> When the final bell rang, it was like waking
from a dream.

While walking home, her cat jumped from a tree to join her.

“How was school today?”

“Not bad, Isis. I
didn’t even realize it was over.”

“You space out too much.
You should focus on school.”

“I know I should, but I’m worried about Kai.”

Not wanting to go into this subject, Isis changed it, “Hey
look! A snow globe shop!style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Let’s go in!”

“But what about…”

“He’s got the bird to watch him. You know as well as I do he’ll shit on anyone that rubs his
feathers the wrong way.”

“You’re right. I need
to have a little fun. It’s only a few
days ’til winter break. Plus I have to
get a Christmas present. Oh!style="mso-spacerun: yes"> And some champagne!”

Isis’ eyes looked her mistress over, “You can’t buy
champagne.”

“I know, but can’t you?”

“I’m not a shape shifting cat. Unless you make me one.”
This last statement held a certain tone to it.

“So you want me to make you a shape shifter?”

“It would be nice.”

Sapphire held up her index and middle finger of her right
hand in front of her face while muttering words under her breath.

“There, you’re a shape shifting cat.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Happy?”

“Very much so. I
thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”
Said Sapphire as she walked into the snow globe shop with Isis on her
shoulder.

“Good afternoon.”
Called a woman from behind the counter.
p>

“Hello.”

In the shop were hundreds of snow globes.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Sapphire put her hand in her pocket just in
case she had to summon some more money.
Isis jumped from her shoulder and began looking at the shelves.

Hey Sapphire, I think Kai would like this one.”

Sapphire walked over to where Isis was sitting.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Isis had found one of the most beautiful
snow globes Sapphire had ever seen. It
was about six inches high, and looked as though it was covered in light frost.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> There was a pack of six wolves inside, and
it ‘rained’ silver upon them. Sapphire
picked it up and shook it lightly.

“It’s beautiful.” She
breathed.

Do you think Kai would like it? Or do you want to give him something else?

I’ll enchant it so that the sparkles fall by themselves
and the wolves move on their own
.”

No. Buy it and
give it to him as it is. He’ll go nuts
if there’s something magical within his sight.
He doesn’t have his power yet
.”

You’re right.
I’ll use it as inspiration instead.

For what?

Well, I was thinking of buying an old fish tank, putting
some dirt and small trees inside, then put the wolves in there.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It’ll be its own ecosystem.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Do you think he’d like that?

I’m sure he’d love it.
He loves everything you do
.”

Thanks Isis.
You’ve helped me a lot
.”

It is my duty to help you. I am your soul, and I am here to help you because that is what I
was created to do
.”

By Kai.”

Yes. By Kai.”

I’ll buy it.”

“Ah, an excellent choice.
I’ve had that one for quite a while.
I’m glad you like it.” Said the
woman when Sapphire took her soon-to-be purchase to the counter.

“It’s for a friend of mine.
He’s in a coma and I just know he’ll wake up soon.”

“I’m sure he will, too.
Your total is $175.50.”

“What?! Why the hell
is it so damn expensive?!”

“Well, there’re two sapphires in place of the lead wolf’s
eyes, and two emeralds in the wolf behind the lead wolf.”

“Oh, well, I didn’t see the wolf behind.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I think I have that much.”style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Said Sapphire, a dark wolf catching her
eye. She summoned $155.50 to her
pocket.

“Thank you. Have a
nice day. I hope your friend gets
better.”

“Thanks!” Called
Sapphire as she and Isis went outside.

The cold December wind hit her hard, so she pulled her coat
around her. Isis made sure to wrap
herself around Sapphire’s neck.

“This is no ordinary storm.
The Council has something to do with this.”

“You don’t think they know where Kai’s body is, do you?”

“No; however, they know where you are, and that’s good
enough for them.” Said Isis as Sapphire
suddenly decided to go visit her adoptive parents.

“Run as fast as you can, Junior Sapphire.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It will do you no good.”style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Came a voice colder than ice.

Sapphire turned around.
All six cynically smiling Council members were behind her, and it was
never good when the Council smiled.

“What do you want?”
Asked Sapphire, realizing she had nowhere to go.

“We want to know where Kai is. We know he’s still alive.”

“What are you talking about?
Kai is dead. You
killed him.”

“We thought we killed him; but his soul base is still
alive. We caught him flying towards
you. What a badmouthed little
bird.” Said a Council member as he
dangled the bird by its feet.

Sapphire’s eyes went wide.
That bird was Kai’s lifeline.
Without it, Kai would...

“NO!” She screamed,
yellow sparks building in her palms.

“Heh, your magic will do nothing to us.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Only Kai’s magic can do us any harm.”style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Said another Council member as the bird
convulsed and burst into flame.

Sapphire was enraged.
Flames erupted into her palms, and her mind whirled with unjust
thoughts.

“You bastards!
He didn’t even get to yell any profanity! It was his favorite thing to do!” She yelled, throwing her small fireballs.

They were dissolved upon hitting the shield that the Council
had erected. One Council member pointed
his finger and shot a bolt of lightening.

There is no way I can block or dodge
it! I’m gonna experience Kai’s spell
sooner than I expected!
She
thought, the lightening spell snaking towards her.

The spell never hit.
Something had knocked it aside.
Sapphire looked up. Her breath
caught in her throat.

He stood in front of her, dark hair being blown by the
wind. His back was straight, and he
stood tall in the sight of the Council.

“Die.” He said, the
simple word seeming to echo around them.
He snapped his fingers, and all six Council members were reduced to
ashes and a small pool of blood for each.

It can’t be him!

“Are you all right?”
He asked, green eyes turning to face her.

“Yes. Thanks.”

“No problem. What
kind of man would I be if I let those jackasses kill my woman?”style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He asked, a smile on his face.

“But your bird...”

“He was flying over here to tell you that I was alive.”

“I’m so glad you’re all right.” Said Sapphire as Kai wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed
her.

“I’m just glad that you’re all right.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> You have no idea what I’d do without you.”

“Same here. If you
thought I was insane before...”

Kai laughed, “I’d hate to see you any crazier.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Whatcha got there?”

“Just a little something.”

“For Christmas?”

“Yeah.”

“I have something for you, too,” said Kai, reaching into his
pocket and grabbing her hand, “here.”

Sapphire gasped. On
her left ring finger was a gold band with engraved ivy and a diamond shaped
like a rose.

“This must’ve taken forever to make!”

“It was my mother’s.
She told me to give it to my chosen wife. The thing is, though, Alia never even heard about this
ring.”

“It’s beautiful!”

“Merry Christmas.”
Said Kai as he snapped his fingers and they appeared in his living room.

Sapphire gave Kai his snow globe, and decided to give him the
ecosystem on Christmas.
