Chapter 58

Chapter 0058: Calm Before the Storm :

Slowly the gates opened to HammerFall Castle. The mercenary army moved back away from the opening to the castle. Proud men rode forth on expensively and elaborately decorated horses. On the lead, black horse rode King Elmgrim. His expression serious and dressed in chainmail with some bits of plate armor. A powerful looking sword rested at his side. THe gates clanged closed with a biting finality behind the youthful looking monarch.

He spoke in a voice that seemed to used to being served and taken notice of immediately, "I am King Elmgrim of HammerFall. I have come to treat with your dark master. Whomever stands for him; please step forward."

There was a moment of silence among the mercenaries. Then laughter filled the hillish plains before the castle.

King Elmgrim shouted and silence once more surrounded the mercenary camp as their captain made his way through the throng of warriors. The air around their captain crackled with sorcery. Stephen knew enough of magic to be able to sense if a person was strong as Rosenbrim in the Arts. This man; whom was their captain seemed to be quite an adept at it; if even his entourage could sense it as they did. The horse remained calm; but the entourages' mounts bucked and did not want to be near such foul witchery.

"I am the leader of this division of the Horde of Iced Earth. So you wish to speak with me, oh noble King of HammerFall." His tone was mocking and somewhat distorted through his helmet. He was garbed in black plate armor with a red cape across his broad shoulders.

Stephen unsheathed a dagger at his side as he ordered, "Yes. Return to the Black East.' he made a gesture eastward with his dagger, 'or I shall force you to flee before the walls of HammerFall. Few will escape this battle if you do not leave now. You cannot hope to prevail against the powers of the West."

Laughter once more erupted across the ranks of mercenaries. One powerful glare from their captain silenced them. He laughed bitterly as though amused. "We are only a small portion of the horde, King of HammerFall. You have not the strength to topple our forces. Open wide your gates and surrender unto me and I shall allow you to keep wearing your crown."

Stephen looked around himself. He knew he was outnumbered and the battle was hopeless without a wizard of Magnus' talents to aid them. Despite that he was King and proudly declared. "We shall not fall to the likes of black hearted murderers and thieves! The Knights of HammerFall shall crush you then. It was my desire to avoid unnecessary death of human life. Then go forth and be ready to die."

Stephen turned his back upon them and rode noblely toward the gate. Then it hit him. An arrow pierced into his shoulder and then another hit him in a back. Soon arrows were soaring everywhere within the air. THe gates opened as the horses quickly charged back in, and closed once more, after all were within.

They quickly helped Stephen off his mount and had him headed for his bedchambers as another servant sent for a medic.
