Chapter 5:
A New Life
I take a last look around the room that James and I inhabited for the last two days and it seems weird to move again so soon. Still I just grab up my bags helping James with a bag of his as well. We carry our bags out and tell Justin and Thomas goodbye as we make our way out of the dorms for the last time. We turn in keys having to give up our dorm room to pledge but it’s worth it as long as we make it.
We flow through the large crowd of boys and girls just like ourselves making their ways to the assorted fraternities and sororities. It all seems to fall into place with us following other boys into the same place we are already headed. It doesn’t seem to be much of a problem leading ourselves into the room as we follow the crowd and at the door I see a boy taking the calling cards we were given yesterday night. We hand over our cards as we enter with the other boys and I hear all of the nervous voices of the boys as we enter the room where they are shoving all of us. I drop my things around the perimeter of the room along with James and the rest of the boys that have been herded in here.
After a while longer the room seems to fill up and then the same boy from last night gets our attention. This time he isn’t standing on top of a table but he isn’t standing as far away either. So I get a little bit of a better view due to distance but worse for the crowd. “Pledges! Welcome to Gamma Alpha Psi. This room is your home for the next two weeks. I hope everyone’s comfortable in the big group. My name is Dustin, I’m the president of Gamma house.” He tells us, and all the boys in the room quiet down.
“I’m sure you’ve all heard tale of what happens behind these walls. After all that’s why you’re here.” He says and I swear I hear a few chuckles along with the grins that pass through the boys. “All of you will be given three outfits for the duration of your pledging you will wear only these clothes so that I and the other brothers can recognize you. Failure to comply with any of the rules or misconduct will result in a mark against you. If you get three marks then the game’s over. You pack bags and leave if you’re lucky you might get another chance next year. However if you manage to make it through all fourteen days of pledging with less than three marks then congratulations you make it.
“Now it’s time to lay down some ground work. I hope all of you had your fun last night because for the next two weeks while you are pledging there is to be no sexual conduct between pledges and any one. You are not to do anything with each other, with the frat members or with anyone for that matter. Don’t even masturbate. This is a rule and failure will result in a mark. Kissing is fine but nothing beyond is permitted.
“If at any time a brother of the fraternity talks to you, you are to be polite and do as he says remember you are at our mercy. As long as he does not convince you to break the aforementioned rule.
“There are to be five events to prove yourself, doing well at these makes it more likely for you to make it through pledging. The events will not be announced beforehand; you must be ready at any time to do as we ask. We will not give away any hints about what is to happen at the event until they happen either.
“Welcome to Hell boys. If you’re lucky enough to make it through pledging then maybe one of our boys will feel the need to reward you.” Dustin tells us and I hear the boys complaining already about no sex rule. I shrug not really caring though as I watch the president start to leave, but then he turns around to look at us again. “Oh I almost forgot. This is Victor and Kyle. They will be staying with you in the room to make sure you follow the rules. Starting with the dress code please collect your clothes from Kyle. Goodnight, get some rest you’ll all need it.” Then he really does leave us with the two fret boys.
All of the boys in the room line up to get the package that Kyle is handing out. At hearing Victor’s name though my eyes wonder to the other boy we are to be babysat by. Sure enough it is the same boy I’ve had meeting with the past two days. My eyes watch him though as we wait through the line and he catches me watching. His green eyes look into my hazel ones holding them there just as steadily. I see the grin on his face and the wink he sends my way. I feel a shiver go through my spine at knowing that there’s no way that Victor just wants to be my friend. I mean even with the pledge card, he could have easily put it in my pocket rather than my boxers. I admit that Victor is hot but I don’t want to welcome his advances when I don’t want anything to happen to my relationship.
My eyes go around the room now looking at the other boys holding up the clothes and I realize right off that there is one of the three outfits we’re being handed that I won’t wear. Still I just take the package telling the boy my size when it’s my turn. I manage to find one of the boys that is my size that looks like he would rather have the outfit I don’t want and will be willing to give me the one that has the most coverage. I walk over to him and talk to him asking him if he’s interested in a trade and he smiles at me. We end up swapping the clothes so that we both like the outcome.
I shove the clothes into my bag before realizing that there really is nothing left but to go to sleep for the night. I notice that James has chosen to undress under his covers but I don’t bother to say anything and draw everyone’s attention to him as the rest of us strip off our clothes uncaringly. I know I see a lot of the boys looking over the almost naked bodies in here and again I hear the grumbling of the boys at being denied sex while surround by raging hormones. I laugh a little at it before lying down next to James and pulling him into me. I kiss his cheek lightly; glad to be able to do at least that. I feel the need to reassure the younger blonde boy so I place my lips right on his ear as I whisper to him. “I love you.” I tell him liking how the words still send shivers down his spine and I can feel it happening. James holds me to him just as closely as he repeats the words back to me.
With that we lie there moving around to get comfortable on the hard ground we’re being forced to sleep on. I hear a soft snoring letting me know that at least one of the boys has managed to find sleep even though the rest of us haven’t. James falls asleep without too much more wait but it seems to take me longer. I linger there on the edge of consciousness as ideas float around my head. Some of them include James but mostly I wonder what Victor has in store for me, as it seems obvious that to him my relationship as just a challenge.
An alarm clock wakes all of us up at six a.m. and strangely though it seems like everyone acts normal. Just a bunch of sleepy boys getting up in the morning. The only one that doesn’t seem tired actually is James. Still that’s pretty normal. James seems to get over his shyness just a little by showing that he will get dressed with the rest of us this morning. With all of the black and red I hate that other than Kyle and Victor all of us in the room match. Then I realize that while I’m dressing I catch Victor looking at me. This is going to become a problem, and I know I should just talk to him. For the moment I just meet his eyes acknowledging the look he’s giving me, but Victor doesn’t back down with the smug smile on his face.
I just go back to dressing pulling on the longer choices of the clothes to find myself more comfortable in the jean like material and jersey shirt. I know that I have to agree with James’ opinion of the clothes that he told me last night, we do look like a gay baseball team. Then when I look at James I don’t really find myself complaining. He is of course wearing the skimpiest of the choices. He does look hot in it though with his ass almost falling out of the shorts and the shirt skintight against his flesh. I really want to do something with that body, fuck not being able to. These two weeks really are going to be hell, if I have to look at James’ hot body and not be able to do shit with it.
My attention is drawn away from that taunt ass though as I notice that all of the boys are heading out of our room towards another part of the frat house being led away by Kyle but Victor lingers taking up the rear of the group. I hang back as well waving James on when he notices I fall behind and he shrugs not seeming to mind. Victor acknowledges me with slight nod of the head when I join him. Unlike the rest of us he actually gets to wear clothes that don’t make him look like a team player. Instead he just wears a tight green shirt with Tripp pants.
“Morning Pledge, is there a problem?” He asks me as if we haven’t talked at all and I’m just another one of the pledges to him. It almost hurts me a little before I stop to remember that I’m supposed to be letting him down. But hearing him push me off as if he hasn’t even met me is almost a bit of a let down.
“Hey Victor. Can we talk?” I ask him not really wanting to say what I have to say here in the middle of the hallway while we follow the rest of the pledges.
“Sure, I can spare a few moments.” He tells me as he stops walking without actually moving a different direction away from the line of boys that are making their way, I assume, to breakfast. Still it seems obvious that Victor wants me to say it right here.
“I just want to say in advance that I’m not interested in you.” I force out. “I have a boyfriend, so I would appreciate it if you would leave me alone in that way.” I tell him partially hoping that I’m not being too mean about this, as I really haven’t had much issues like this to deal with in the past.
Victor smiles at me slightly as he answers and it seems still like he is trying to be professionally unaware. “I have no idea what you are talking about. Relationships are strictly forbidden between pledges and fraternity members. It’s nice of you to think that though.” He tells me again making it obvious that he is playing with me as he just starts walking away to rejoin the group. I sigh somehow knowing that this isn’t going to be as easy as seems. Still I guess there isn’t much I can do now. So I just make my way to join the group as well catching up when I see that most of the boys have already helped themselves to the food in the kitchen of this place. Then I notice that James has poured two bowls of cereal so there is one for me as well. I sit down next to him taking the extra from where he sits and meeting his curious gaze.
“So what took you so long?” He asks me curiously.
“Nothing I just forgot my cell back in the room.” I lie starting to feel bad again about lying to James, but I don’t know how to explain it either without hurting him. Still he just accepts the answer as we eat our breakfast. Some how the pledges and I manage to make it through the first morning without any surprise events but I start to wonder when they are going to start making it hell for us as I walk to my first class for the day.
Chris notices me walking inside the classroom with my new clothes on and I swear I see him laugh slightly. “Nice clothes.” He tells me as I get closer to him, and I swear I wish I didn’t have to wear the clothes. I roll my eyes at him.
“I’m pledging. They’re forcing me to wear this.” I tell him watching him smile as I speak, like he doesn’t really believe me. “I mean it, you should see what James is wearing today.” I tell him and it makes him laugh slightly.
“I’ll leave that to you.” He tells me with a slight smirk on his face as I again start to wonder about Chris’ preference when it comes to dating. He definitely seems ok with me and James dating but at the same time it seems at moments like this that he is smirking about me talking about James. I just file it away for later though as the teacher walks in. For a while the teacher has us going over theory, but then we are allowed to actually go out to the auto yard and try our hands at it. I pair up with Chris even though we don’t really talk much as we do the simple task assigned to us.
I finish the rest of my classes simply enough and start to head back to the frat house. I don’t make it all the way there though. “Gamma pledge?” I hear the unfamiliar voice calling to me, making me turn around. I see a boy who looks a bit older than me and maybe a bit more muscular as well. He looks right at me waiting for a response.
“Yes. Are you a gamma member?” I ask him wondering if this could be the start of one of the events Dustin mentioned.
“Shut up, follow me.” Is the only answer he gives me before he starts walking away without another word. Not knowing what else to do and not wanting to fail at the first even I follow him keeping quiet just like he said. He leads me across the campus not even heading toward the fraternity. Instead it seems like we are heading out of campus all together. My thoughts are confirmed when we get to the street and I see a car there waiting with the motor still running. The back door opens as soon as we approach it. “Get in.” The boy tells me and as soon as I do I’m attacked. I’m blindfolded but not actually hurt more than being restrained before I get a look at any of the people in the car. I open my mouth to ask what the hell is going on but before I get a chance I’m backhanded right across the lips.
“Keep quiet. We’ll be there soon enough.” A new voice tells me so I assume it must be the one who blindfolded me. Before I know it I’m being shoved out of the car, led by the wrist along with shoves and pushing from the boys around me. Then I hear the voice of the first boy that led me to the car to begin with. “Alright, he should be the last one.” He tells someone and it seems like we are still outside despite the fact that I can’t see.
“Good.” Comes the answer from a voice that I’m starting to recognize as Victor’s. Then I’m being shoved again and I feel more bodies around my own. Then the blindfold is ripped off my face letting me see what situation I’m in for the first time since this started. I seem to stand in a field surrounded by the rest of the pledges, who seem to have been dragged here blind as I was. We all blink our eyes adjusting to the light and where we are.
“Hey where the hell are we?” One of the pledges calls, making all look at him. The frat boys all have smiles on their faces as Dustin shows himself, instantly speaking up from the middle of our crowd.
“Strike.” His voice booms making the pledge fall back a step completely silent. “Anyone else care to speak up?” Dustin asks and wisely we all stay quiet. “Good. Pledges welcome to the first event. We are twenty miles from campus. There is a club about half a mile away. Your goal is to find a date off the street and convince him to come with you to the club. I don’t care what your age is, get in by any means. We’ll meet all of you at the bar.” Dustin finishes moving out of the crowd at the same time he finishes his explanation. His escape is easily made as he jumps into a car leaving all of the pledges alone for the first time, not even Victor and Kyle remain. Still I’m sure we’re being watched for misconduct.
“The club is down this street. Let’s get moving, we’re only a little ways out of town.” We’d probably all mistrust him if it weren’t for the fact that he’s already started running that way, so instead we all rush to keep up. Before I know it James is at my side and he seems like he is thinking over all of this.
“Devin,” I see the question on his lips before he even asks it and I know how obvious he is.
“It’s fine, James. Let’s just go come on.” I tell him not willing to hear him protest about us having to take a ‘date’ to the club. Then it hits me that James might have problems getting in the club since he isn’t twenty-one. I shrug it doesn’t really matter now, we have gotten to the town and the boy that spoke up is right we weren’t very far as well. I can see the club and all the pledge boys rush to obtain dates. I send one last smile towards James to see he has run off in the madness as well.
I see a slimmer boy that is almost lingering towards the entrance of the club, like he wants to go in but isn’t sure. I walk up to him slowly, letting his eyes catch hold of me and look me over. “Hey, I’m Devin. Want to go inside? I’ll buy you a drink.” I offer to him hoping that I sound confident despite the fact that I really have as little experience with this as James. It seems like it works for me though as he smiles at me.
“Sure. I’m Peter. Nice to meet you Devin.” He tells me as we head to the entrance of the club getting in easily enough as it seems that we are both able to get in with our id. cards. “Hey dance with me first.” He tells me and I shrug as it seems obvious that all the rest of the pledges haven’t made it in yet, not to mention the fact that I kind of need Peter to go along with me in this. He smirks at me pulling me onto the dance floor and right up next to him. We dance for the rest of the song but after that I really have to insist that we go to the bar because everyone is there now, even James. It seems like James even managed to snag a guy that might be a little harder to get rid of.
The boy next to James is bigger and wearing a leather jacket. He has his arm thrown around James’ shoulder and I just want to ditch Peter and rip that boy’s arm off of my boyfriend’s shoulder. For some reason I’m starting to like this whole pledging thing less and less. It was bad enough having to watch James dancing with that boy at the party I don’t need to see him draped around another boy now too. I grab Peter around the waist leading him to the bar and he doesn’t seem to complain at all at the way I handle him. Then I feel bad slightly for doing that when I know I just did it because I feel jealous.
I get a silent nod from Dustin as I approach the bar with Peter and some how I get that that is all there really is to this event. Some of the other pledges have even moved at this point to the dance floor and when I see one of the pledges getting close to his date I start to realize that there is another test at hand here. I remember Dustin’s words the first night that we aren’t supposed to do anything sexual but it’s clear that after a drink or two and a dance most of the boys here are going to expect it. That must be the real test for us to be on these dates and escape them with out doing anything more than kissing.
This might be easier for me because I honestly don’t want to do anything with Peter. Sure he’s cute but to me it’s a simple as looking at James. Even with the other boy he’s with for the night I know that it doesn’t mean anything to him. It eases my jealousy slightly thinking of that. Still I spend more time with Peter actually buying him some fruity little cocktail drink before dancing with him some more. Then at one point I see Peter lean in with a smirk on his face, his lips near mine and I need to push him away. I hold my body back from his, seeing the disappointment come over his eyes.
“Sorry. It’s not anything to do with you. I just got out of a relationship and I’m not really looking to do anything like that.” I lie to him easily enough hoping it’s as convincing as I think it is and again it seems like I have Peter fooled. He just nods to me. Then I see a fraternity boy waving me over him. “I have to go. It was nice to meet you.” I tell him before quickly making my way to the Gamma member.
“Time to leave.” He tells me so I follow him out and find myself being led into a van this time with about five of the other pledges. Unfortunately James isn’t in this car with me. Victor is in the car though and I see a smile on his lips aimed right at him. I sit in the back of the seven-seater van and I find myself kind of disappointed when Victor sits down next to me.
“Boys, you’ve passed the first event be proud of yourself.” Victor announces to the car making the pledges yell out in another shout of joy. I don’t join them though as my eyes just look over Victor still wondering what he is up to. Then I hear him whisper under the sound of the other boys’ yells. “It didn’t seem like you cared that much about your boyfriend tonight.” My eyes glare at him and I see him smirk. He pulls his cell phone out of his pocket and pushes a few buttons before he seems satisfied. “After all he didn’t really seem to care about you.” With that sentence he slides the phone onto my leg letting me fully see the image on it. James is on the screen and so is that big biker looking guy I saw earlier and they’re kissing.
I shove the phone back into Victor’s grip as a tear slides down my cheek. I try to ignore the smirk remaining on his lips as he thinks he’s won. All I feel is my heart as it shatters.
I decided to update this today as I just finished writing ch 6. I need to catch up on my count still. I'm about 3k words behind now so I'm getting there. Hope everyone enjoys the chapter. Now onto my reviewers.
Lisa: As to how they're supposed to survive for two weeks without even jerking off well the point here is the Gamma boys want to make it nearly impossible for the pledges to get in. Not everyone will make it. Being all together with that sexual tension is all part of the test. And yea it's pretty safe to say that they will be focusing on matters other than school.
