See you at lunch

(Adam’s POV)

When I got back to school the next day, the chatter was even more loud than usual. Everybody was talking excitedly about yesterday’s game. And I had to admit that it was one of the best games I ever played. Wherever I turn my head I would hear “Good game Adam ! ” or “Dude, that game was something!” . I would answer with a smile and short thanks then continue my way to my locker. I was pulling my books when someone stopped next to me. It was Cannon. I looked at him expectantly and he said : “Hey, Adam. I know we didn’t have a chance to talk and all. I just wanted to say that you played a good game yesterday and there’s a party tonight at Blair’s house to celebrate. It would be cool if you came along.”

I really didn’t feel like going but being the captain, I couldn’t say no. As a team we had to have a bond even outside school. And I have been distant with them, so this party is the perfect opportunity to get to know them a bit more, besides we deserved to have a little fun after so much hard training and the well earned victory. So I said “Yeah, sure, I’ll be there.”
“Cool, see you at the party. It’ll be a blast”. Then he was gone and as I turned to go to class, I felt a hand land on my arm. It was the head cheerleader, Jennifer. With a smile she thought was sweet she said “Hey, there’s a party tonight. You are coming, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, I am”
If possible, her smile got even wider, and she exclaimed “Great, it will be so much fun. We didn’t really have a chance to talk before” she pouted”How about we go together?”
Here we go again, I thought bitterly, then as politely as I can I told her”I don’t know when I’ll go to the party, I have stuff to do before that. I’m sure I’ll see you there.” She pouted again and tried to give me the puppy-eye, funny how it didn’t work, and she asked “Are you sure?”
“Positive.”
“Alright then, see you tonight.” Then she left swaying her hips in what she thought was a seductive manner, and soon she was surrounded with her followers of the cheer-leading squad, I’m sure to know if her flirting was successful. I sighed and left for class. That’s when I saw a small figure walking a bit ahead and I knew it was Gabriel.

I sped up to catch up with him . I saw, amused, that he was in his own world again, so in order not to startle him, I patted him on the shoulder to get his attention. When he turned his eyes to me, I realized for the first time how pretty his eyes are. They seemed almost too big in his small face, and as he looked at me they seemed to look right through me right into my soul. I realized I was staring so I leaned back reluctantly and smiled at him “Hey Gabriel, how are you?”
He answered softly “ I’m alright, thanks”
“You weren’t at the game yesterday.”I stated rather then asked. He looked at me with an expression that seemed to say How did you know. So I answered “ I saw you talking to your brother before we left for the stadium.”
His lips formed an “Oh” as he processed what I said then he shrugged a bit saying quietly “I’m not really interested in sports.”
“I’m sure half the girls aren’t either, yet they were there to see the game.” I said teasingly.
He smiled and said “I have a feeling it has more to do with the players than the game.”
I laughed out loud at that and said “You are right. But it was a good game nonetheless.” I don’t know why but I wanted to talk to him more, about the game, about me, everything. Unfortunately the bell chose that time to ring and he gave me a small wave turning to go to his class, but I didn’t want to leave like that so I called “ Hey Gabriel, wanna have lunch together?” He seemed to think about it, and for a moment I was afraid he didn’t want to talk to me and didn’t want me around, for some reason that thought made my stomach twist unpleasantly, then bit his lower lip , that seems to be a habit he had, and said quietly”I don’t usually have lunch at the cafeteria.” Oh! so that was the reason, I sighed in relief then said “No problem, how about lunch under Willow? “ His nodded then giving me a shy smile he said “ Alright. Bye”. I couldn’t stop the goofy grin as I waved at him “Bye, Gabriel, see you at lunch.”
Then, feeling light hearted and happier than I’ve been the whole morning, I went to class waiting for lunch time.
