Chapter 6
AN: This story isn't going anywhere too quickly is it? Well, other than the whole explanation of things, things should really begin to happen soon. Hope you all like this story still so far.
And sorry if it always takes me forever to update.

When I woke up, I began to plan on what I was going to have to do. I didn’t really get much farther than asking who Burdy was and to see if there was anyway to find him.
That’s what I decided to do first thing. Well, that is, after I eat the really delicious looking food sitting on a small table that had appeared while I was asleep. I remembered that I haven’t really ate anything in the last few days, and I all but scarfed down the food.
“How are you feeling?” I choked, and managed to clear my throat, and looked up to see that Meredith was in the room. I must have been so drained of energy that even my senses were skewed.
“Fine,” I grumbled, not wanting to look at her, and instead stared at a spot above her head. The lights had been on since I had woke up, and the curtains closed.
“I heard what happened.” I held back a groan. Gage told them? They’d probably kill me if it hadn’t been for the fact that it would kill him too. But he told them. I don’t think I’d be able to look them in the eye, especially if they really were a family. Which made me think. How?
“Gage called you mom.” I stated, and she gave me a sad look.
“It’s… complicated.” I finally looked her in the eyes, and she bit her lip. “Some time ago, I met his father, Gareth, and we soon fell in love. I became his Bonded for a while. After about two years of this, I found out I was pregnant. With Gary. Soon after him, Gage came along.”
“Oh.” Again, something I could hardly believe, but not impossible. Just… improbable. It also explained a lot.
Why I could sense him, why I still can’t, and also why he has a resistance to blood. He’s a Dhampir. A half vampire.
“Gary… He embraced what he was. He accepted it willingly. But Gage… not so much.” She told me, staring off into space.
“Why?” I just had to ask, for some reason, I wanted to know. I had to know his reasons.
“I don’t really know for sure. I guess he’s just going through the whole, ‘I want to be normal’ phase.” I can relate. Very much so.
That’s why he was so hesitant to bite me, and I really can’t blame him for doing so the first time. Here I am, whining about how I just want to be normal, and I’ve pretty much erased anything close to normalcy for this boy.
But. If I can find Burdy, and make him change us back to the way we were, then it would get better.
For me. I don’t think Gage could ever go back. He’s had a taste for blood, something else that’s my fault, and that’s not something a vampire can just… reject. He could try, but I doubt he’d be sane for too much longer. I have a feeling that’s not something he’d want.
I’m not sure why I even care. Maybe because we’re sort of in the same boat. Or maybe its an effect of being Bonded. I don’t know, but I wish I did. It’s making everything confusing.
“Zach?” She broke me out of my thoughts.
“Yeah?”
“You want to know about him, don’t you?”
“Who?” If she was talking about Gage, I don’t know. I think… maybe. I think it’d be best to find out at least a bit about him while we we’re stuck together. But it seemed I guessed wrong, but I was equally happy.
“Burdy.” I nodded. “Its Gage’s uncle. Gareth’s brother.”
“Why don’t you like him?” I asked, actually curious. These vampires, they were different from any other vampires I’d ever met before. Not that I met a lot, and those I did, actually had a reason for me to hunt them, but… I’m not really sure where I’m going with this.
“He’s not a good man. I mean yeah, I guess you’d think no vampire is, but… he takes it too far. Far to far.”
“How is he going to help us?” She looked up at me sharply.
“We… we were kind of hoping that maybe… you’d like to be a part of us?” She said slowly, and I stared at her as if she was crazy. “Okay, I just mean. A girl can hope, right? But really, do you think… you could just try this out? Just for a little while?” I shook my head vehemently. No, I was a hunter, I couldn’t live like this.
“No.”
“If that’s what you really want then. The thing is, we don’t know where Burdy is. He kind of just… disappeared a few years ago, after he…” She trailed off, wringing a tissue she’d gotten from somewhere, in her hands.
“After he what?” I prompted, curious, but she shook her head.
“I’d rather not say, not right now.” I decided to leave it at that. I’d probably find out later anyway.
“Isn’t there any way to get in contact with him?” I pleaded, not ready to let my one lead go. Meredith looked at me, giving me an odd look before sighing.
“Your really really serious about this, aren’t you?” I nodded. “Well, there might be someone who knows where he is.”
“Who?”
“A vampire, Uriel Yelders.”
Oh. Shit.
“Ah…”
“Is something wrong?”
“He’s dead.” I said blatantly.
“How do you know?” She asked, eyes wide. Shit shit shit shit shit.
“I… kind of… was the one who killed him.” Meredith smiled and shook her head.
“Don’t kid around with me like that.”
“I’m… not.” Oh god, I hope she doesn’t get mad. I still hardly have any energy, and if it comes to a fight, I’d probably lose.
“Sweety, the Uriel I’m talking about was an Ancient one. I don’t mean to be rude, but your little more than a child, there’s no way he could have been killed by you.” Well. I’m not sure if I should be happy that we’re more than most likely talking about different people, or offended that she pretty much called me a kid.
If the one I went up against really was an Ancient, than I would be dead, not him. Ancients, are, as they are named, ancient. As a vampire gets older, they acquire more abilities. Yes, they’re strength grows, but not much, but with the knowledge they would have to have to be alive that long, plus whatever ability nature gave them, even the higher up Hunters would have lots of trouble with just one. In its weak state. Yeah, it’s that bad.
We pretty much leave them alone, and they usually don’t bother humans too much. They’d rather be in hiding, because apparently their identity being found out is too much of a hassle.
“Oh, good then. Where is he?” I asked, wanting to get this done and over with as quickly as possible.
“Last time we heard, he was living in Germany. That was about twenty years ago, but he might still be there.”
“So let me guess. If he’s an Ancient, I’ll have to go to him?”
“Yes, but the thing is…” I groaned. There something more.
“What?” I prompted, regretting it before the words even left my mouth.
“Since your newly Bonded, you won’t be able to go without Gage.” Well, I guess I should’ve figured that out on my own.
“There’s something else isn’t there?”
“Yeah. You see, it’s hard maintaining a home anywhere near a town, so I’m going to have to stay here, to watch over it. Same as Gareth. And Gary, well, he left the other day. He doesn’t like being around Hunters, he said.” I doubt she was trying to, but I think she was accusing me.
But wait, this means…
“So it’s going to be just me and Gage?”
“Pretty much, yes. You could always stay here…” She offered, but she knew that I was going to say no, and didn’t even bother to look hopeful.
“When are we leaving?” I asked, and she sighed again.
“Tomorrow morning.”
