In the next week the school was notified of our new position and everything was switched from my mother’s name to my brother’s. He was now the soul caregiver in the family, our family. Of course, coach didn’t like this idea at all and made his two sense well known where I was concerned. I wasn’t one to be provoked but we were sitting at practice that Friday after the Welfare lady had come and coach was spueing all kinds of hatred towards me. I didn’t care what he said, he wasn’t my coach and I personally thought he was a true dickhead. On the other hand though I didn’t think that him giving Sean the beating he was giving him was a good idea.
“Come on you pansy’s but and extra step in there! Walker, your pansy sister can run faster than you, move it. I don’t care if you worked ten hours today either dedicate yourself to this team or take a seat.” I couldn’t take it anymore. I knew if I broke I would not be aloud to watch practice anymore but I didn’t care anymore.
“Will you let off of him. Can’t you see he’s working his ass off to be your damn star player.” I said coming off the bleachers to stand right in front of him, “yes, he’s taking care of me which should say something about his character not about how much less time he has for everything else. So let off me and him. He’s a better player and a better person than the rest of this team put together so stick your attitude up your ass and shit it out your mouth!” I said screaming by the end of it. Sean was running to me and by the end of my rant he was standing next to me. Coach looked dumbstruck.
“Chey, go home. I’ll be there in a bit.” He said lightly pulling me away and shooing me to my car.
“No damn it, ever since he was told that you were being responsible and considerate he has taken a vindeta out against you and I can’t take it anymore. The shit he has been saying that you can’t here would make your head spin and his come off. I’m sick and tired of hearing about it,” I turned to the coach and said “yes, my mother took off and left me behind, she may not want me but Sean does. We are brother and sister and your little selfish stupid attitude is getting old. No, I’m not alone and yes I am fine I don’t need psychological help so just shut your fucking mouth!” At that I turned from both of them and walked to my car got in and left. Within five minutes of being home Sean came flying though the door.
“I can not believe him!” He said screaming.
“He didn’t kick you off the team did he?” I said thinking that he took out his embarrasment on Sean.
“No, I told him to shove his football up his gay ass. That he would be hearing from the superindentent about his treatment and to screw off.” He said dropping into a chair. “I can’t believe he was saying that shit to you and you never said anything to me.”
“I know but I didn’t want you to quit and I knew you would.” I said straddling his lap. I laid my head on his shoulder and sighed.
“He’s not the only reason I quit, I need the time to work and there’s more to life than just football. I have you now and I need to make sure that your taken care of.” he said kissing my forehead. I got up and walked to the fridge just as two-thirds of the team pushed into our house.
“What the hell man! We can’t do this without you!” I rolled my eyes and moved around them to sit down.
“I can’t just let coach say the shit he’s been saying go. It’s not right! I’m sorry guys but maybe football just isn’t the answer right now.” I knew Sean was unhappy quitting football so I stepped in to stop what was going on.
“Your not quitting, so go talk to your coach. I can handle myself don’t you worry about me. On top of that football is the only thing keeping you sane during this whole thing.” I replied downing some of my Gatorade. Sean looked at me a long with the rest of the football team. I could see most of them turning there heads between us: back and forth.
“No, I have made my decision. I have to give up a few things in life to take care of you and I won’t risk it.” The boys looked as if they were about to protest.
I shrugged “No, you just want an excuse and I will not be it. You’re not risking anything but your sanity by giving up football. I will not let you do this, I will go talk to your coach myself if I have to.” The boys continued to look back and forth between us wondering if they should skip out and let us settle this or stay and watch the fight.
“Oh no you won’t. I’m in control of our lives now and I will do what I want when I want. If I don’t want to get back on the team then I won’t. Chey, this is enough I will not have this discussion with you. I have to look after you and I don’t want to lose you, so enough is enough!” he said standing up.
“I can not believe you! Some lady gives you rights to me and you start talking to me like this. Next, you will be monitoring me even more than you already do. I won’t even be able to breath without you, I’m not a little girl I can take care of myself I don’t need your help. As for your responsibility for me you can shove it up you’re ass. I DON’T GIVE A SHIT ANYMORE!” I screamed at him as I got up. I left the table with a few mouths on the table and my brother trying to grasp onto the concept of what I just told him. I slammed my door and locked it.
Later that night after all the boys had cleared out Sean came up the stairs to talk to me, but seeing as I won’t answer the knocking or unlock the door he took for sitting outside my door until I did come out. I was furious with him, I couldn’t believe he would talk to me like that, especially as if I was a burden to his life. I feel asleep that night hoping he would just leave me alone for awhile. When I woke up the next morning I found my brother asleep in the hallway right in front of my door. He had been crying I could tell.
“Sean, Sean, wake up.” I said shaking him. He turned to look at me and just as he was about to say something I put my finger to his lips. “I don’t want to hear your apologies. I want you to listen, I am not an object and I will not let you give up your life for mine. I’m tired of all this fighting and I don’t want to argue anymore so go back to football, please.” he gave me a look and then bowed his head.
“I can’t go back. The lady from the service told me that I would have to give up football to take care of you. It’s not our decision it’s hers and she says no football so there’s no football. I didn’t want to quit but I had to.” I bowed my head knowing that he was giving up his love just to be with me. I had to do something and I think I know what that something is, leave, or rather move on. I love him so much that I can’t stay, hopefully after awhile he will move on and start his life again. I kissed him on the cheek and helped him up, knowing full well what I would do after he went back to bed.
